I had a colleague that studied civil engineering at Delft University. He once told me that the whole Delta Works project cost more than the Appolo project to put men on the moon. I also found it fascinating that he told me that the civil engineers and mathematicians had to invent new mathematics for the calculations needed for the Delta Works. I have no clue about maths, so I could not tell you if he was right.

1000 years ago they started with the dikes, before that flood mount building was the thing. The Netherlands have mountains, my town of Zwolle is build on a mountain, at least 3 m above sea level even.. (meters, not miles). Zwolle is Low-Saxon for Swollen place, low hill. The spot is in the middle of several rivers meeting, trade routs, but stayed dry in winter, so the right spot to start a city, there have been farms since the Neolithic period here, they found the remains of a Wood Henge here and bell beakers.. ( Wood Henge - like Stone Henge but made out of wooden poles... only the holes were left..but it was a big circle etc.. So a very old place..

Wow. That was incredible to watch. The ingenuity is right, well done on building that country, some very smart people there! So very sad and devastating to see some early day floods, especially the one that killed 100,000. Great idea to build a mountain lol their winter athletes are very good I’ve watched them in the Olympics. The Netherlands is so beautiful, love watching and learning Tash. Have a super day🫶

"Amsterdam Brief Life Of The City" by Geert Mak. (The literal translation would be "A small bit of history on amsterdam") This book makes you feel like you were there from when it was founded to when the subway was built and a crapton of old shit was found.

I went to the Deltaworks when I was young, every Christmas we would see the different steps in the process of building the 2 storm gates on each side of the island... when we first went Neeltje Jans was sand and had a trailer on it as "information center ", in 2014 I went back there, and there's a whole exhibit with what they had done and what steps were made. And for kids, there's a lot to see and do as well.

Hey, Tash. There is a really cool video about the construction of the polders that you may be interested in. It was released in 69 so it's also a a cool look back in time. It's called "Ernest Kleinberg Films: The Netherlands: Struggle for Land"

I randomly stumbled upon this reaction, but I can maybe supplement the video. I did a short scroll and didn't see this mentioned in the comments yet, so here goes. The video actually skips a bunch of amazing facts because it deals with quite a few subjects, so I'll focus on just 2 things. The Afsluitdijk, the dike build to close the inland sea Zuiderzee and change it into a freshwater lake IJsselmeer, was literally build by just dumping loads and loads of rocks from the backs of ships into the sea. Thousands of people worked on it and possibly the most interesting job; mat weaver. Once the dike breached the water's surface a massive mat of woven willow was placed on top so more rocks could be placed and it would all stay in place. If you image search for "Afsluitdijk willow mat" there will be a few correct photos in the many results and I even saw a genuine archive photo only a single screen scroll down. Another amazing thing about the Delta Works is that special section they were talking about. You see, with the knowledge gained from the Zuiderzee Works they knew what completely sealing the estuaries etc would create fresh water rivers and lakes. So at the last moment the plans were adjusted for a movable barrier. So that special section is made from a bunch of concrete pillars. Pillars so massive that, because they're hollow and despite being made of concrete; actually float! Because of the large tidal difference they had to create the pillars nearby on an artifical island, then flood the dry dock, have the pillars on stand by, and float them with milimeter precision to the right spot in the roughly 90 minutes between low and high tide. Then they were filled in so they'd sink. Finally, on that artificial island they placed a concrete bar with a poem inscribed; "Here the tides are ruled by the Moon, the Wind, and Us" ("Hier gaan over het tij de maan de wind en wij"). Pretty baller statement if you ask me.

The Dutch athletes train all over the world, but mostly travel to the alps when they are training for the major winter sports. Except for our most important winter sport: ice skating. These athletes can train in our own ice skating venues all over the Netherlands.

Ah we dont have mountains but we do have 2 ancient vulcanos ( probably a few more that havent been found yet) 1 beeing the westwal vulcano south the island of terschelling and more recent discovery of the Mulciber 150 milion year old vulcano found 100 km north-west of the island Texel .. Both are in the huge dutch national gasfield regions . for thousends of years , frisians would build Houses and farms what are Clay mounts ( terp ) to prevent flooding of their homes and life stock . Its quite amazing that technology developed over 2000 years ago . is still relevant today . Windmills , Archimedes screws . If one says oldfashioned its the same technology used today only upgraded with other materials and ways use the wind power.

Officially the Netherlands 🇳🇱 does have at least 2 mountains 🏔️. The tallest of which is on the island of Saba. (A special municipality in the Netherlands) The mountain is called Mt. Scenery and it is 887 meters high. The other is on the island of St. Eustatius. These Islands together with Bonaire 🇧🇶 are special municipalities of “the Netherlands”. “The Kingdom of the Netherlands” also has 3 other countries besides the Netherlands, (kind of like Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 to the UK 🇬🇧) Aruba 🇦🇼, Curaçao 🇨🇼 and St. Maarten 🇸🇽.

Winter sports are serious in the Netherlands, but mostly ice skating. There are a number of artificial ice rings throughout the country.

Nothing beats the 125 mile Elfstedentocht and while it heavily depends on weather conditions and it becoming increasingly rare (last one was over 25 years ago) there are businesses offering special clauses giving their workers a day off should the tocht der tochten ever occur again. It's a sport very close to heart for many Dutch people.
