@@evila9076 Theyre not talking about injecting DNA into cancer. The only DNA manipulation in this vid as far as I'm aware was to create the cancer in the tadpoles in the first place. Also, crispr doesn't work like that at all (nor is crispr going to ever quite be practical large scale since each person its used on requires a different custom version of it). Whats being proposed in the video is potentially far more feasible than crispr since it's able to revert/stop the cancer cell's behavior WITHOUT modifying any DNA

Isn't there already a series of heart medications that alter electrolyte (i.e. electric pathway) channels to alter function to address arrhythmias? Anyway, the problem with medications is that they go through the whole body, so taking a medication that alters charged cells will affect all cells in the body, not specifically cancer. Unless the medication only activates if it bonds to a certain receptor on a cancer cell or something. Anyway, super interesting tech, but I doubt it is feasible today in treating cancer patients :(
@waterunderthebridge7950
@waterunderthebridge7950 4 жыл бұрын
Justin Delacerda That’s already the case for heart medication, a lot of cardiac ion channels controlling cardiac rhythm are specific to the heart so they can be targeted exclusively. A pan-tumour treatment would probably be difficult as they can arise from pretty much any tissue

Molecular biologist here. That second study you cited with tadpoles is not really going to be applicable to medicine. Judging by your description, it's safe to assume that the "gene injection" was CRISPR-cas9 which edited the host genome to integrate those genes. Using genetic editing in medicine is something that we are a ways off from utilizing, considering the kind of disastrous side effects it could produce and our current lack of ability to control it

@BTheBlindRef

no. Our Sun is made out of similar stuff and is WAY bigger than Jupiter and it does not become solid. It begins fusion instead. Jupiter is fully condensed now, it's just made of mostly gaseous elements. 1:44 To be as accurate as possible you may want to say "totipotent stem cells" instead of just "stem cells", and to be less accurate, yet acceptable, you may want to say "pluripotent stem cells", as the majority of stem cells in the human body can only differentiate to only certain types of tissue, e.g. hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) can only divide to blood cells. It's possible that some research could take stem cells and revert them to a state of pluripotency, but so you can do to many tissue cells. Please correct me gently if I'm wrong. I only wanted to point this out as many people confuse stem cells for pluripotent stem cells, even when most of the time it's a benign confusion, I think some people may want to know this.
@Alsarnia
@Alsarnia 4 жыл бұрын
What's pluripotency? Is it a state all stem cells go through at some point or something that only happens to pluripotent stem cells? How can you tell whether a stem cell is pluripotent?
@humaniton
@humaniton 4 жыл бұрын
@@Alsarnia Pluripotency is the state of the stem cell that can produce all cells in your body, the one most people mean when they say "stem cells" are "pluripotent stem cells", there are also "Totipotent stem cells" who can produce all body cells in addition to the placenta and other stuff, usually it refers to the fertilized egg. There are also multipotent stem cells that can produce a certain number of body cells but not all of them, like hematopoietic stem cells, these can only produce blood cells and not other cells. There are also oligopotent stem cells that can produce limited types of cells like myeloid cells that can produce mostly white blood cells, but not other blood cells. And finally, there are unipotent stem cells that can produce only a single type of cells (I can't remember an example now). The thing is when most people speak of stem cells, they mostly define them as pluripotent stem cells, while in reality, the vast majority of stem cells in our bodies are multipotent, with some oligopotent and unipotent stem cells, while pluripotent stem cells are mostly limited to embryos.
