Күн бұрын

There was a time when fans of giant robots had to make due with cartoons. Thankfully, one man came along and changed all that with a live-action giant robot movie that would end up as the final release of Charles Band's Empire Pictures. His name was Stuart Gordon, and he deserves far more appreciation than he gets today for blazing a trail in giant robot cinema.
This is Giant Freakin’ Robot diving into the failure and redemption of Robot Jox. And there's no KZbin channel more qualified to do it!

Saw Robot Jox about 10 years ago at a local rep cinema. Instantly loved the design of the mechs, but for whatever reason didn’t think to look into it much. I hated the look of all the mechs in Pacific Rim (with the exception of Cherno Alpha, which looks amazing) and wondered why they couldn’t look as good as the ones in Robot Jox. The fact that Ron Cobb designed them sure explains why the Robot Jox mechs look so good though!

I saw Robot Jox years ago. Joe Haldeman was embarrassed to admit he'd co-written it, and it got me curious, so I saw it the first chance I got. LOVED it! There was so much more to the story than I'd expected, which is always a plus for me in judging a movie. Too bad Empire didn't have more money to spend on it; maybe it would have looked better and done better? It should be a cult classic, at least.

Robot Jox is one of those special nostalgia movies for me. As a kid (and even now), I loved anything to do with Robots. Be it Transformers, Z-Bots, Power Rangers, etc. If it had a robot in it, I was invested. So, when I went with grandparents to our local blockbuster as a wee child, and saw a movie for rent called "Robot Jox", I nearly pissed on the floor with excitement. And when I tell you, that I wore that poor VHS copy down, you better believe it. I rented that thing probably a dozen times. Eventually I moved onto other obsessions, and kinda forgot about it, until... My Sophomore year of highschool, I met a kid in my study hall who would become one of my best friends to this day. And when me and him got together, and started swapping stories about the stuff we grew up watching... eventually, Robot Jox came up. And his story with the film, was nearly identical to my own. That connection made it an even more special film. Alas, when it came time to procure my own copy, the pickings were slim at best. Really, just old VHS copies, or some super cheap-O DVD releases. But then, several years back now, they finally announced a proper Blu Ray release, with special features and all the good stuff. I put in for the preorder, and was rewarded with it coming in the mail a few days early. I watched it as soon as I could, and was genuinely impressed how well it held up against my childhood memories. Once it came in, I got in touch with my friend, and we set up a time to finally watch it together. It was absolutely sublime. It's obviously not a perfect movie by any means, but oh my Zuul is it a great low Budget sci-fi flick. It's a movie I can watch at any time, regardless of my mood, and still have a blast. And to all my fellow Jox fans out there, Crash and Burn 👍

I remember seeing this movie on a shelf in my local video store. Never checked it out but I have seen several of Stuart Gordon's movies, without realising they were all by the same guy. I have to give all of them another go sometime soon!

I saw this movie ONCE when I was 6-7 years old and I've had the last fist bump burned in my brain for 30 years, this movie which name I didn't knew until today is the core of my passion for the "real-robo" genre

I actually went and saw Robot Jox at the theater with my dad during Thanksgiving 1990. Loved the concept of the film, the special effects, and especially the rousing music score by Frederic Talgorn.

I stumbled across Robot Jox sometime in the late 80s on video at a local video rental place. Being a huge fan of sci-fi, I begged my parents to rent it for me. I have fond memories of watching it while building robots with Lego.

I saw it once on a nighttime slot in my early teens, and it took me a decade to find what the movie was called and rewatch it and I loved it to bits. I kept thinking, both back then and later on, "why are there so many Star Wars knockoffs, but not Giant Robots?"

Because giant robots are underrated. We like the idea of space not robots maybe.

I remember getting this on a 3 vhs boxed set along with Arena and crash n burn, all of them were great films that I still watch even now, I think they were very ambitious for their budgets, and the use of models over cgi just adds to the charm.

Yep! And again when I saw the opening scene of Transformers in 2007. I remember leaning over to my friend, as just one Deceptacon was annihilating a US military base in Iraq, and saying "And they still think a MecWarrior film wouldn't work!"

Me and six of my friends left together right after class got out on the Friday it was released, rushing to the theater to beat the crowds. There were two other people in the theater when the lights went down. The ending was ... challenging to enjoy after an entire film of demonizing the antagonist. The chainsaw cod piece was hilarious, though. We did not leave the theater feeling we'd witnessed cinema history, but I've always appreciated the memory of the seven of us laughing at/with this in an empty theater.

Never got to see it in theaters. But I had my parents rent Robot Jox over and over. Makes me wish someone would do a live action Battletech/MechWarrior movie. There was also Robot Wars and Robo Warriors that I rented as well. Pacific Rim was cool but there is just something about using practical effects in my opinion. I hope Stewert Gordon's dream was satisfied with Pacific Rim and SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets landing before he passed.

I'd like to see BattleTech/MechWarrior but done by a Japanese or possibly Korean Studio, as they would do it justice. Hollywood's studios would use the brand but give us WokeTech, the GirlBossWarrior.
