They were fairly popular in Québec. In fact, the car it was based on, the Renault 12, had itself been a popular model.

Well, to be honest the Renault 12 platform wasn't as ancient as it seems to be - FWD, nice suspension choise, rack and pinion steering. It lived a long life 'til late 80's. But if you' ve got a choise between let's say Lada Signet (really ancient, but decent quality) and Dacia, most people will choose the first one.
