How the GLSDB long range weapons system could change the war in Ukraine I DW News

The United States is expected to send a new longer-range weapon to Ukraine. The Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb can send missiles more than 150 kilometers - roughly double the range of Ukraine's current longest-range weapon. That would enable the Ukrainian army to attack Russian forces from a greater distance AND far behind enemy lines. The weapon is made jointly by the American aerospace company, Boeing and Sweden's SAAB.
Meanwhile Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy has said his country deserves to start talks on joining the European Union "this year." The comments in his nightly address followed initial meetings with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, ahead of a joint EU-Ukraine summit due later in Kyiv.

The introduction of HIMARS (and M270) was a game changer, allowing Ukraine to hit targets far behind the front line at great accuracy and they were almost impossible to shoot down (there are a few unconfirmed cases at the Kherson Bridge where Russia might have shot down just a few after firing 30-40 SAM rockets). Now with longer range, it will probably have a massive impact, since they fly longer and might give Russian SAM assets more time to respond, but my guess is that these can hit targets more or less unhindered. Happy hunting!

We need to give the UA the ability to continue hitting the K strait bridge between Russia and Crimea. Nothing that will destroy it (it will take to many weapons) but punch some good sized holes in the rail section to prevent the transfer of supplies. Once that gets cut, we'll see the RA Kherson troops situation begin to deteriorate quite quickly

@PhoenixFires
@PhoenixFires Жыл бұрын
@@mizzo8341 You may not understand where the Crimean bridge is. It connects Kerch to Crimea. Kerch is a Russian city. Cutting it off leaves the supplies routes weakened, meaning Russia now has to divert supplies coming from the Kerch peninsular region all the way north and through a stretched thin frontline to reach Crimea-stationed forces. This gives trhe opportunity for Ukraine to wear down the southern front further, which was once a primary concern for Ukraine due to the thrust across the Dnipro River.

I am no military strategist (30 years ago used do be a medic in the infantry) but I think the Ukrainians have done really well with the western weapons so far, would make sense to expand on what they know how to use or similar systems that may require just minor training. Hopefully Leopards and Bradleys will arrive aplenty, Challenger 2 & Abrams just window dressing. They have made great use of HIMARS/GMLRS so GLSDB will be straightforward for them, might be useful if required something that can carry enough high explosive far enough to reach the Kerch bridge... They have loads of soldiers used to piloting drones, from "toy" ones all the way to Bayraktar 2, so give them Predators and Grey Eagles dripping with Hellfire Longbows. Probably still the bulk of fuel, ammo and personnel is being transported from Russia into Ukraine by rail so target that first and keep hitting it if they try to mend it. Any lorries travelling by road should be taken care by the Predators, if they get shot down it should at least highlight were the Russian SAMs are and hit them with HARM

So true
@charlesrichardson8635
@charlesrichardson8635 Жыл бұрын
Remember the GLSDB exchanges speed for distance so as you get to the end of the possible glide path you are under 160 kmh. So you have to launch a lot more at that longer distance. Accuracty is not affected but speed drops and allow SHORAD to be more effective. Now the GLSDB can attack from many angles within the glidepath, unlike the GMLRS which always comes in at the lowest radar horizon at Mach 2.5.
@Slavic_Goblin
@Slavic_Goblin Жыл бұрын
Additionally, any turning or compensation for wind will invariably effect speed and range. So the 150 km range is probably only true for a straight line approach with little to no wind interference.
@charlesrichardson8635
@charlesrichardson8635 Жыл бұрын
@@Slavic_Goblin You are correct it is about total glide path being 150 km but windage, temperature, humidity, obstacles and other factors are in that number, so more and less. Example if you had a target at 130 km and looped 20 km to come in from the back under the radar horizon, you would still hit the target. Other targets like a ferry would have to allow glidepath to hunt the ferry down. Remember wind raise relative airspeed and provides lift to the wings so while it can effect the distance a bit either way, the average range is 150 km safely. Like the GMLRS the stated "guaranteed" range is about 70 km, but in fact it hits targets at 85 accurately all the time and can under specific conditions hit targets at 95 km. To do that you have to have patience and listen to the targeting systems.
@Slavic_Goblin
@Slavic_Goblin Жыл бұрын
@@charlesrichardson8635 Yep, pretty much. I do feel like I have to tin-pick a bit regarding that example of a loop under the radar... if you're making a loop where you're backtracking, you'd have to deduct the distance of the backtracking twice from the nominal max range. Not only are you turning at 130km, but then you're backtracking for about 20km, so the target could be at a maximum of 110km. Strictly speaking it'd be even less than that, cause a loop will have a minimum radius, thus making the path longer, and turning will bleed away quite a bit of energy, thus shortening the distance further. As fro the wing, yeah, if you have good data on wind conditions, I'm sure you can even extend the range a bit. Though, side wind will mean you need to constantly adjust the heading, thus bleeding energy, and a tail wind is just bad. I.e. glide bombs a finicky but cool weapon.
@charlesrichardson8635
@charlesrichardson8635 Жыл бұрын
@@Slavic_Goblin Sorry, I wasn't clear. I put the "target" at 130 km to allow a loop around, and it's not so much of a back track as an attack 180 degrees from the front. So if four GLSDB are coming in one would travel 130 km for a frontal attack, two would come in from +-90 degrees of the frontal attack traveling around 140 km and the rear attack would come in after a 20 km sweep around the rear. The nice thing is all 4 can be calculated to hit the radar horizon of the target at the same time, and a low one that would challenge modern computers much less Russians ones. You are correct a side wind is the most damaging to range but the course can be optimized to minimize this issue. There's some pretty decent math for the control systems for this. This is something that is done with glide planes regularly. So yes on some days on an extreme range attack may not be possible but remember the 150 km range is a released "guaranteed" range and so we can expect there is some wiggle room there. It's not a super weapon that can hit anything anywhere at all times, but it has range and seekers and I can't wait to see how UAF with the help of the USAF uses this weapon! I don't think you are going to want to be a command post anywhere in that 150 km range.

The GSLDB will extend Ukraine’s current strike range, but technically, they are still considered short-range. While looking at the UA War Map, and measuring the shortest distances between the line of contact and Ukraine’s border, one might get the impression that the 150km range is adequate. But, to cover 1000km line of contact, remain out of artillery range, prepare for a 2nd attempt up North, and reach Sevastopol, a max range of 300km would be more advantageous.

Making weapons and being militaristic are two seperate things. Yes militaristic nations make a lot of weapons, but a nation can be armed and even a huge maker and supplier of arms without being militaristic, Sweeden and Switzerland are in that camp, and the US produced, sold and then outright gifted lots of arms in WW2 while being outright isolationist. NATO nations are expected to spend 2% of GDP on defence, but it dosn't require that a country have a military, if Germany wanted it could just make stuff and gift it to other nations to fufill it's obligations.

GLSDB will hopefully help to hit deeper the Russian command, logistics and supply lines. I would like more advanced UAV sent (before or instead of fighter jets). Predators would be a good place to start. 360 made, most in the US but all decommissioned in 2018, a few in Italy (decommissioned last December), a few in Morocco and Turkije. They can carry stingers, Hellfire Longbow and maybe Brimstone. Even if they get shot down let them go in a blaze of glory, anyway Russia has long got hold of some shot down in previous conflicts. General Atomics has recently offered Reapers, can carry a lot more weapons but the technology may be too sensitive. Anyway I would like to see each and every railway line in occupied Ukraine coming from Russia be made permanently inoperable, same for any bridges and main roads. Difficult for the Russians to fight if their fuel and ammo has to arrive on the back of donkeys

It is so funny listening to europeans (well, Germans, Italians, Belgians, French) talking about all the solutions to Ukraine's problems that the Americans, Poles and British have provided. Germany is sending a dozen or so tanks - and thinks it deserves to be worshipped for that, France is sending some up-gunned armoured cars and Italy is sending its best wishes to putin. I hope that the eastern bloc headed by Poland seize power in the EU, they have earned it. The 'old, moribund, self-centred, lazy, privilaged core of the EU does not deserve power. It hasn't earned it and astonishingly it has chosen to give the moral high ground to a polish government that doesn't even really believe in the rule of law. Germany, France and Italy have failed. Although I wanted Britain to remain in the EU, I find I don't mind being outside at the moment - All the major powers in there are embarassing.

The thing is, one M1 Abrams tank costs $10M -- that's what 500 GLSDB costs. So, 30 Abrams next year plus 500 GLSDB in a couple of days or 31 Abrams next year? There's not a single logistic center for Abrams on this entire continent, it'll take years to build one, and where? At least 12 countries here already have all the logistics for Leopard 2, most of them in close vicinity and for immediate delivery now that Sleepy Olaf has got his wake-up call from Biden. Go figure...

May not be needed, 150 miles today means Russia will relocate supply depots further back and weaken their offensive (more goodwill retreating), and GLSDB's can advance 75 to 100 miles safely and extend their reach of destruction. Unless the OK is given to target sites in Russia, Ukraine will be under constant attacks, this going to be Hamas and Israel all over again.

The Pentagon is reluctant to provide tanks for all the reasons you mentioned. That leaves us to speculate whether the US had a plan to help Ukraine that did not involve tanks. I say yes. Yes ukraine has a long way to go, some countries are still in cadidate staus after years of trying and they're not at war! But wanting to become an EU member has set them a goal, something to aim for and hopefully achieve. The fact that the government is having these leadership shake up's and investigations is a really good first step to flush out the corruption within. I remeber seeing a clip of a policeman making people pay hundreds in order to pass a road, as soon as someone reported it to nearby soldiers, they detained him. To think the military had to arrest an officer meant to be helping the people, hopefully this type of corruption is gradually handled.

Training soldiers is a vital resource for the Ukrainian Military. Having a steady flow of western trained soldiers on the battlefield allows frontline soldiers to be rotated off of the line to get some down time and see the family. This is absolutely essential to keep a competent capable fighting force. I would say it's the most important aid that Ukraine is receiving, but the one that gets overlooked or considered not as big as a contribution. Training these Ukrainian soldiers gives them the upper hand on the battlefield, Russian soldiers don't receive near the same level of training, if any at all. One of the many reasons Ukraine has had so much success on the battlefield.

Something important to know, for all who are interested in history and/or support Ukraine: Rus' ought not to be confused with modern “Russia”, which derives its name from the Rus' but historically is a completely different state, which almost all its existence was at war with the Rus'. Just like the Holy Roman Empire was actually Germany, “Russia” is actually Muscovy, despite their best attempts to convince everybody otherwise. Its name “Russia" received only around 1721, when Peter I simply changed Muscovy’s name into the “All Russian Empire” (Russia originates from Rosia, name used by the Greek Orthodox Clergy in regards to Rus') Under the reign of Cathrine II Muscovites where even punished for continuing to identify as Muscovites, and were forced to call themselves Russian. Lands that Russia (Muscovy) claims were part of the original Rus', but actually weren't, are Novgorod, Suzdal, and Ryazan, since in historical texts of XI-XII centuries they are mentioned as separate entities from Rus'. They can be considered parts of extended Rus', although their culture was distinct from main Rus'. In 1493, Muscovite duke Ivan III appointed himself to be the Great Ruler of All Rus'. No other kings acknowledged that. From that point on Muscovy started to make false claims on Rus' ownership. “Russia” is an offshoot of Ukraine and not the other way round, despite what Soviet and Russian (Muscovite) historians have been trying to say for years. A Slavicised Finnic, then later, Mongolized offshoot. Kyiv was a developed cultured capital when Moscow was just another swamp village. Germany used to call itself the Holy Roman Empire, that didn’t mean they became the Romans, and all of a sudden had a right to claim whole of Italy and its history, but yet, that’s exactly what Russia (Muscovy) did in regards to Rus'-Ukraine, which is a horrible injustice!

Yes makes a whole lot of sense and they should be allowed to strike military support targets over the board border of Belarus or Russia if military resources are paused to attack they should be open season.. it just makes sense Belarus has already been allowing them to attack as a safe house. Don't hit Belarusian targets but hit Russian military targets hard even if they are on Belarusian territory you want to end the conflict you have to finish. You have to finish the job..

Actually the gimmlers where enough for the last offenxive and where a lot better except for their range. This sytem isn't that good but is good enough if they don't put thers stuff in a bunker. Wich there currently aren't enoug to do that.

@@lesterquintrell4844 poutn is a fascist invador trying to genocide a people. He has filtration camps and mobile incinerators. This is very clearly good vs evil. It hasn't been this clear since ww2.
