I had good experience in dr with hospital visits....I was in Sosua and I got food poison and I went to the private hospital there it was about 10 minutes away from where I was at in Sosua... I was in the hospital for 4 days and I had 3 meals a day and a very comfortable time recovering.....note I have blue cross blue shield international insurance and y medical bill was a little of above $4k and I had to pay roughly $217 out of pocket...

It’s ok that hospitals are humanitarian in nature, but they’re also businesses and need the money to keep running. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been starving for a week, if you go to a restaurant, they won’t let you go until you pay.

I guess in the state they’re private hospitals, public hospitals and none profit hospitals. I stand corrected; but either way someone have to pay for services rendered. They will get paidI one way or the other. I only wish that some people who live in developed countries understand that things just don’t work the same in other countries. I understand how some people feel; but one have to understand these private clinics need to get paid for services rendered regardless of your health situation, or they have to close their doors. What’s left, public hospitals and who really wants to be there. If your a frequent visitor to the DR or you live there, get insurance. If you’re vacationing get that travel insurance and avoid all these issues. Thanks James y Norberis for touching this topic again. 👍👍👍

Hello nice people, great informative video. So far I have not found local insurance for over 65 years of age. Do you know of any plan for over 65? I will be there in December for 6 months.

One more note. In 2012 I brought into the Ghana National Health Insurance Scheme just like a person who is born and raised in Ghana. It cost me about $13 and some change for coverage for the entire year! For a child the cost was $5. I"m in Thailand now and I just talked to man who owns a restaurant near where I live. He said his wife who is Thai, (he's a foreigner ), pays 30 Baht a visit when she sees doctor or goes to the hospital. That' is just under $1. I was in Kuala Lumpur Malysia a during covid in 2020.People at hotel told me that for a Malay citizen when they go to hospital or doctor they pay 10 Ringgit a visit which includes doctor fees, medicine and all other cost. That's about $2.50 USD So we may brag and boast about our system but to me it's far from the best! The most costly in the world and doesn't give the best outcomes for patients according to numerous studies. ijs peace

More than one way to look at it. In 2003 when I was in hospital overnight in Cape Coast Ghana. Three bags of electrolytes. 2 Vials of blood for testing and all that went with it. Released next day. Bill just under $15.00! Yes it was years ago but still!

On another note. In Ghana and probably other poor countries if hospitals didn't operate this way they'd go out of business because once a person is released, especially poor people that's all you will see of them and you can forget about getting the money! May sound bad but this is true. It's like you said it pays to know what you are getting into ahead of time. I saw a video a couple of years ago about living in S.E. Asia. The advice was for a person to always have 5 to 10 thousand dollars in reserve for medical emergencies or that much on your credit cards to take care of things. To me this makes the most since if one doesn't have medical insurance to cover these things and many of us don't. So in Ghana at least they will admit you but you are not getting out until the bill is paid, no matter how long it take. lol

I truly understand. Systems around the world especially in poorer nations work differently than in US. I have a Philippina friend who lives in Cebu and is born and raised there. She told me if you can't pay for services they will let you die right there! I've heard the same story in Ghana, but can't swear how true it is. The story in Ghana was that the person was admitted but needed surgery right away and the doctors refused to perform it unless someone brought the money first! On a personal note i was so sick the first time i was in Ghana I didn't know if I would make it out alive! I was taken to a hospital in Cape Coast where I was living. May have been a public one but it was new and seen nice. the second time I was taken there they had to admit me. They didn't ask for money or insurance. They treated me and released me the next day after I called my friend and had her go to my house and get the money! In Ghana people stay in hospitals sometimes for months after they are healed until they pay the final bill

We have the equivalent of public hospitals in the US. They are called county hospitals where the poor folk go and even people with good insurance because it's where their doctors are. In Atlanta it's called Grady Hospital, In Kansas City it's Truman Medical Center, in Minneapolis MN it's Hennepin County Hospital if I remember it right.

Never been in Dr in a public hospital, have been at emergency in private hospital with Blue Cross and all was good after insurance confirmed. From my Dominican friends, as a foreigner , you don't want to be brought to a public hospital, as you don't have a whole DR family to go and buy things for you and bring to the hospital. You will not be treated anywhere in DR before you pay or insurance is conf

Hey, another question for y’all, can you ballpark the cost if you did not have insurance and went to the public hospital? Out of pocket cost from start to finish? Thanks!

If you go to a public hospital they’ll see you without insurance and without money. It may not be the ideal place, but they won’t let you die!

Love your content and I follow you both for a long time. I think one of the issues is that in tourist areas there might not be a public hospital. Also many tourist don’t know there is a choice of public or private.

Neighbor works for the federal government. Was in a motorcycle accident broke his leg in 2 places. and they didn’t touch him until the insurance company cleared. 7 days. What a joke. You will die waiting for your insurance to be approved. Yes this is how the system works 😂 prove me wrong!!!
@silvias550
@silvias550 12 сағат бұрын
Yes, that's the system. They don't touch you until insurance approves treatment. But after , you are treated fast. In Canada is different: If emergency, ambulance come, they treat you, then send you a 100k bill, depending on the emergency. Just saying as I know someone who's fater non-Canadian had a diabetes crisis and stayed few days in the hospital
