I have never been to the Sistine Chapel. So the Orangerie is the most impressive room full of art I have ever seen. I long to see it again. But alas, my days of art pilgrimages are likely over. Disability and the poverty that comes with it ended all that before I made it to Rome. But these films make it easier to admire art from a distance. For that I am grateful.

Wow. Wonderful. I fell in love with the Impressionists at about age 5, when my Daddy showed me how they had painted. Painting was his dear hobby. He and my mother, of limited means, spent what they could on fine art books (1950's, when they were expensive!)...My sister and I were allowed to look at them if we washed our hands and sat nicely on the sofa. (Not the floor, where we liked to read.) So...I looked at the books, painted with my Daddy, and sketched all the time. Became an artist, an art teacher, a lecturer about art and art history. Just before Covid started, I did a retrospective which took up the whole local library--titled, ''My Life in Art Books''-- So! I'm so enjoying these videos--so intensely alive themselves, with new information, fresh slants on the familiar, visually following in the footsteps of my heros. What good company you are for that, Mr. (Dr.?) Waldemar Januszak! Thank you very much--these are, for me, light spilled into a dark time.

I love anything with Waldemar in it. He is so unpretentious. I don't feel he is ever selling himself as others do. And seeing those easels was actually mind-blowing. They used to be so big they weren't very portable, but someone invents one that folds up. So simple. Back in the day, that must have been huge. These days we take things like that for granted. Humans are pretty clever.
@lamo17242 жыл бұрын

The big easel he showed is pretty modern and still used today. Artists use even bigger ones than that in their studios. But there is also even smaller more portable ones now such as u.go box which can fit into a handbag and screws on to a tripod.

I've been sharing your documentaries with my senior abstract art students, both women and men, here in Ajijic, Mexico. I try to inspire them with art history and also the Women Artists of the 19th and 20th centuries, who have been discarded in so many ways. My purpose is to see if I can get them to find the lost child within, still waiting to experiment with paint and surfaces of every kind. It has become so exciting for me, maybe I can take all of this with me into the next life ... never stop learning! I'm a vintage Essex girl (1943) who lived most of her life in QC Canada very post-war, and now has the enormous pleasure of living in Mexico. Art is everywhere here, and when this pandemic is over we can get back to volunteering with the local Free Children's Art Program at Lake Chapala Society, which has been ongoing for 62 years, only one year missed ... 2020! Some very well known Mexican artists began in this program when there were little kids. And, I have to say, these kids have an innate talent for art of every kind. What a Joy! Gracias por todo!

Art history should be all inclusive: the political, the religious, the artistic trends of an era, the very personal background of the artist. My goodness! If I’d only had Waldemar in art college. The way he connects all of those elements helps you understand each artist, learn so much, and totally enjoy the whole experience of learning from this wonderful, witty genius. Best of all you feel as if you’re traveling right beside him as he walks, rides, or sails to the most awesome places and examines and points out hidden details and meanings in a painting or sculpture. What exquisite fun! All art teachers should have to watch him before they’re allowed to step into a classroom and bore us into comas with their minimal facts and birth and death dates.

Very good documentary. I think you should do a video about the gallerists from that period and after; Durand Ruel, Flechtheim, and probably the most important Kahnweiler. There’s a great biography by Pierre Assouline about him. Without those gallerists who managed to sell impressionists, fauvists, cubists...mainly to Russia and America; those amazing artists may have been lost in history. Also D-H Kahnweiler has such an incredible story: almost losing everything during both world wars, and rebuilding every time. Being Jewish, and German too really made his life incredibly difficult. Just an idea.

Waldemar, I really appreciate the artist in you who sought the practical aspects of creation of the art: before i saw your videos, I never thought whether these folks had a “color tube” , “a non circular brush” for the quick strokes to capture the scene before you or a “portable canvas”. You know the history (thanks for the research) but I am more amused by how you bring to it life (with you and other people going in and out of the video - witnessing the art you are talking about)! Really appreciate the perspective and your artistry (of story telling, music, sounds, speed of videos and the words you use to narrate)! Thank you!
