Im not sure what happened at Cochella, but from what I know, modern CDJ programs adjust the speed of songs for you, but old school DJs can do it by ear. This is a major crux in the DJ community, many people believe if you can't beat match by ear, then you're relying too much on tech. If she was relying on the sync button, then software is doing this by numbers. If your numbers are wrong and you can't adjust the tempo by ear then you'd have to adjust the tempo using numbers like how the software does. If the bmp was doubled, I guess you'd need to make extra steps for you to achieve this matching.
@SingKahKah7 ай бұрын
Programs like rekordbox, traktor, etc. analyze the bpm of tracks within a certain bpm range that you can set, so it can either show up as 160 bpm or 80 bpm (which is technically the same). My guess is whoever prepared her tracks did it in batches and didn't double check, and then she obviously doesn't know how to beat match on the fly so the doubled and mismatched bpms confused her

@TamaraKane7 ай бұрын
And yeah. There's been even more than that. Grimes and Elon (Elon more than her, but she does her share) follow, comment on, like, and retweet, so many neo-nazi accounts. And like the video said, she said she "loved white culture," which what is that even supposed to mean? And in comments that followed she said the thing about being a human supremacist, and later when someone said something about "white power" she said she was okay with it because "white achievements have been underrated" or "underappreciated" or something like that. Then a bunch of her own friends and followers were asking her to apologize and delete the tweets and she said something like "I'll never apologize for loving the human race," or loving European achievements or some such. And she said the thing about how "it's not like all races haven't had slaves," as though that minimized what white people did.

@TamaraKane7 ай бұрын
@@fattern111no. It doesn't. Black culture, especially in the US, came about under extreme circumstances that forced a label on a lot of people from a lot of different places. They had to form their own culture, much of it in secret. They had to sneak away from horrible people to be able to dance. They were banned from reading, so they had to find ways around that, ways to learn, ways to communicate. They would make songs, go dancing. They created their own dances. That culture very much only belonged to them. And it wasn't some gift from slavery. They created it in spite on slavery, through the strength of their own will to survive. And they fought for their freedom. They regained their equality. And white people have been trying to take it back ever since. There's not a white culture. We didn't all come together and bond as one people based on our skin color, or get forced to do that because of discrimination against our skin color. We're way too fractured to be a culture. There's American culture, and a lot of subcultures, but there's not really "white culture." We don't have a special way to mill wheat that only white people do.

For example, in a Vogue interview (I think?) she talked about how a photo of herself kissing a woman went viral and got her a lot of hate on tumblr back in the early 2010s. She proceeds to say this was "before the woke era" so a photo of two women kissing wouldn't be well received back then. I remember thinking what an *interesting* word choice there. 2011 me would've never imagined Grimes and my super Fox-News-Watching uncle would be using words the same way.

As for the dj stuff: basically in rekordbox (dj software) it sometimes analyses the songs at different bpms or half time. I dj drum and bass; so 174 a likely dnb tempo sometimes is listed as 87 bpm. When you have sync on, it will change the track that’s listed at 87 to 174 (ie syncing the tempo); however it means the sound sounds double speed. The way is an easy fix you just press x2 in export mode in rekordbox. She would have encounter the issue if she had time to practice her set 😅. Most DJs know how to dj by ear (with visuals - vinyls is not for everyone) and don’t 100% rely on sync; like it’s a case of just turning off sync, reloading the track and then making if as she stayed 173 (what sub focus usually is) just 86.5 . I have a phone with a calculator. The other issue is she outsourced her rekordbox prep - which I get it’s annoying but like…. Girl no 😂.
@sentimentaltrash7 ай бұрын
She also mentions the sub focus track reading at 134 instead of 173 which is weiiiiiird; as I dj him a lot and his transients (ie where kick / snare) are prominent making it easy for rekordbox to pick up the tempo. So that is honestly really odd to me. But yea an easy fix would literally just turn off sync and then wait for a moment in the track that has no beats to blend in the next track at any bpm; 3000s (standard for headline shows) make it really easy to do beat jumping and looping but that I would say is more intermediate. Which again…I get she’s busy and has a lot going on but a dj 101 would have saved this 😅

It's funny how the crowd wants artists to be original, mind-blowing, and, most importantly, genuine with their fans, while also expecting these artists (whose minds obviously work differently) to be normal and mainstream in their lives. Artists become famous and attract people's attention because they are different. Judging artists for the names they choose for their kids, the books they read, and the things they do doesn't make any sense at all. This unique perspective on life is what makes them who they are and allows them to create the outstanding art they make. It's so simple. Otherwise, they wouldn't become who they are.

If you've been following colonial discourses, in recent years people have been shouting that it's not normal to romanticize Russian culture and okay Claire studied Russian at uni where without context from people who suffered from that culture I understand why she might like it. But all her quotes about wars about victims of genocide like water dehumanizes us, it's terrible, and her attitude to victims of genocide and love for Russian culture takes on a new context with how white supremacists see Russia and the genocide it commits as anti-woke America. So Grimes was never an anti-imperialist, she was a privileged Canadian girl who studied Russian culture and romanticized it and communism in her work.

I think you should start planning a monster “how the internet fell out of love with kanye west” cuz there’s a lot to cover 😭

Ahhh so glad you covered this I lowkey wish it was longer cause there’s so much there and honestly would love more detail; I also think you’re really fair and nuanced!!

When she dated Elon I was so disappointed and realized that just like every other celebrity she doesn't have the same morals or outlook as us...The music also went downhill too
