I don’t think it’s intelligence as much as it is street smarts. I was surprised to find out she’s almost 40 with three kids. The way she acts reminds me of my teenage self. I was a sheltered artsy kid so the biggest worries I had (outside of school) were choosing my outfits and working on my creative projects. Living away from home, paying bills, and having a job while in college helped me grow up a bit. Still practice my passions but they’re not the only thing I worry about now.

Most of the greatest in music history were abusive towards women or just pos at some point. I won't wear their merch and give them my money directly (buying new albums, going to shows,...) if I know they're awful but I'll still listen to the music I like while still being aware that I should take the message with a grain of salt at the very least. @@evecates2232she's not a zionist. She has said very clearly that she loves Palestine and hates what Israel is doing to them. She hates genocide. The "net" mask you're referring to had multiple layers of sheer fabric. It was not just net. It was a safe fashion mask specially made to look like netting. It was made by a designer for her to be an "illusion" mask and it was only used for a music video she was in, in which she was riding in a car by herself. She was pro-masking and vaccinating and false rumors like yours are why she bailed on social media. She also got called a Trump supporter even though she can't stand him and put a hex on him.

Honestly I think even her best work occupies this boring valley between pop and more bold or overt creative experimentation. One more notch towards the former and it would have more of a catchy radio quality, one more notch towards the latter and she’d have more of a legit FKA Twigs or Kate Bush quality. But instead she somehow finds like the boringest of all worlds by triangulating something between those. At least that’s how I’ve always felt about her music. I wouldn’t say it’s bad but I’ve never understood the appeal either.

I feel so bad for your age group in this situation. My son was your age and really liked and respected Grimes. Then her problematic comments made him pretty depressed for a while. He used to like Elon, too. He still loves space exploration, but he really doesn't appreciate the way the pair of them pretended to be basically kind and for a less hateful world only to do a 180. Just saying this to let you know you're not alone. And I tell my son that the good he related to in them was part of him, even if it wasn't real on their end. He has integrity where they did not. I hope your generation keeps your love of cool music, even if you guys have to look a bit harder to find it from less toxic artists now. Your compassion will help shape the new music going forward. Distancing from Grimes will make room for ethereal singers who aren't corrupt. (Hopefully they'll stay that way fingers 🤞)

Im not sure what happened at Cochella, but from what I know, modern CDJ programs adjust the speed of songs for you, but old school DJs can do it by ear. This is a major crux in the DJ community, many people believe if you can't beat match by ear, then you're relying too much on tech. If she was relying on the sync button, then software is doing this by numbers. If your numbers are wrong and you can't adjust the tempo by ear then you'd have to adjust the tempo using numbers like how the software does. If the bmp was doubled, I guess you'd need to make extra steps for you to achieve this matching.
@SingKahKah
@SingKahKah 7 ай бұрын
Programs like rekordbox, traktor, etc. analyze the bpm of tracks within a certain bpm range that you can set, so it can either show up as 160 bpm or 80 bpm (which is technically the same). My guess is whoever prepared her tracks did it in batches and didn't double check, and then she obviously doesn't know how to beat match on the fly so the doubled and mismatched bpms confused her

@@Reverse_Cat_Cowgirl yeah thats pretty much it, you cue the track as well as you can and the manual adjusting slows down the deck (just like putting friction on a vinyl record makes it spin slower) so you can further line it up on the fly. Personally, based on what I've read and heard of her life, it sounds like Grimes is very hyperactive and like a child, has fleeting interests. I believe her activism era was very much real to her, because she sounded genuine, she appeared invested. But it seems she also parrots the interests of her circle, whomever that social group may be. Now that she's with Musk, from whom she seems to be codependent, it makes sense to me she'd mirror many of his views. She just seems like someone very unstable, in the sense they'd have a hobbie one day and drop it completely the next month in favour of the new big thing. Or that's just my appreciation.

Yeah. It's really sad. It kind of devastated me. I didn't get on social media for about two months when she said the most openly racist stuff and wouldn't apologize. And she actually used to talk to me every once in a while on Twitter on her alt accounts. I was in her art Discord and we shared a bunch of art there and it was kind of beautiful. I painted a portrait of her and she liked it. I once told her to be brave leading up to her custody hearing and she thanked me, but asked that I not mention it on Twitter because of the possibility of eyes watching her. I feel weird even talking about it now, but I guess I can since I have abandoned all hope for her.

I think a big part of the reason Grimes has gone from beloved to mocked is because her time spent with Elon Musk made people realize that her "underground indie kid" aura was always fake. 1000% percent she should know how to handle it in real time if she were even a mildly proficient dj. Unless she’s djing straight jazz or foxtrots everything should be divisible by even numbers since it’s going to be in 4/4 measures or maybe 6/8 measures if she plays a song with that Gary Glitter beat or the Personal Jesus beat. Frankly, she should at least be able to dj without having to have everything preloaded like its homework assignment. You should be able to dj with a working mixer and sound without even the use of a WAV visualization. Also, having someone doing all your prep work for you sounds like a terrible idea for any club let alone Coachella.

Eh, tbh, I really don't like juxtaposing being talent with being rich, awful, and neurodiverse as you put it - neurodiverse people aren't inherently assholes nor untalented, so I wouldve edited that part. Same with the ending - for a lot of minorities, the fascism and her use of her cultural capital to apologize for a man who supports nazis is kind of a bigger deal

Agreed. I'm neurodivergent and I'm not racist beyond what I consider to be the inescapable racist privilege of being born with light skin. In other words, a cop might treat me better than a person with another skin tone, even though I have a somewhat mixed background. I don't want special treatment, but I benefit from that racism whether I like it or not. Being neurodivergent would never cause me to turn into a racist or be so impressionable that I could. I guess when we're kids there's a window of time when we're vulnerable to influence, but she should be way past that.

And in comments that followed she said the thing about being a human supremacist, and later when someone said something about "white power" she said she was okay with it because "white achievements have been underrated" or "underappreciated" or something like that. Then a bunch of her own friends and followers were asking her to apologize and delete the tweets and she said something like "I'll never apologize for loving the human race," or loving European achievements or some such. And she said the thing about how "it's not like all races haven't had slaves," as though that minimized what white people did.

@@fattern111no. It doesn't. Black culture, especially in the US, came about under extreme circumstances that forced a label on a lot of people from a lot of different places. They had to form their own culture, much of it in secret. They had to sneak away from horrible people to be able to dance. They were banned from reading, so they had to find ways around that, ways to learn, ways to communicate. They would make songs, go dancing. They created their own dances. That culture very much only belonged to them. And it wasn't some gift from slavery. They created it in spite on slavery, through the strength of their own will to survive. And they fought for their freedom. They regained their equality. And white people have been trying to take it back ever since. There's not a white culture. We didn't all come together and bond as one people based on our skin color, or get forced to do that because of discrimination against our skin color. We're way too fractured to be a culture. There's American culture, and a lot of subcultures, but there's not really "white culture." We don't have a special way to mill wheat that only white people do.

For example, in a Vogue interview (I think?) she talked about how a photo of herself kissing a woman went viral and got her a lot of hate on tumblr back in the early 2010s. She proceeds to say this was "before the woke era" so a photo of two women kissing wouldn't be well received back then. As for the dj stuff: basically in rekordbox (dj software) it sometimes analyses the songs at different bpms or half time. I dj drum and bass; so 174 a likely dnb tempo sometimes is listed as 87 bpm. When you have sync on, it will change the track that’s listed at 87 to 174 (ie syncing the tempo); however it means the sound sounds double speed. The way is an easy fix you just press x2 in export mode in rekordbox. She would have encounter the issue if she had time to practice her set 😅. Most DJs know how to dj by ear (with visuals - vinyls is not for everyone) and don’t 100% rely on sync; like it’s a case of just turning off sync, reloading the track and then making if as she stayed 173 (what sub focus usually is) just 86.5 . I have a phone with a calculator. The other issue is she outsourced her rekordbox prep - which I get it’s annoying but like…. Girl no 😂.
@sentimentaltrash
@sentimentaltrash 7 ай бұрын
She also mentions the sub focus track reading at 134 instead of 173 which is weiiiiiird; as I dj him a lot and his transients (ie where kick / snare) are prominent making it easy for rekordbox to pick up the tempo. So that is honestly really odd to me. But yea an easy fix would literally just turn off sync and then wait for a moment in the track that has no beats to blend in the next track at any bpm; 3000s (standard for headline shows) make it really easy to do beat jumping and looping but that I would say is more intermediate. Which again…I get she’s busy and has a lot going on but a dj 101 would have saved this 😅

It's funny how the crowd wants artists to be original, mind-blowing, and, most importantly, genuine with their fans, while also expecting these artists (whose minds obviously work differently) to be normal and mainstream in their lives. Artists become famous and attract people's attention because they are different. Judging artists for the names they choose for their kids, the books they read, and the things they do doesn't make any sense at all. This unique perspective on life is what makes them who they are and allows them to create the outstanding art they make. It's so simple. Otherwise, they wouldn't become who they are.

Grimes and her ex-husband have done a lot of harm to many people, but as a Ukrainian woman whose life depended on Musk's decisions, I can say that Grimes' transformation and her love for Russian culture scares me. If you've been following colonial discourses, in recent years people have been shouting that it's not normal to romanticize Russian culture and okay Claire studied Russian at uni where without context from people who suffered from that culture I understand why she might like it. But all her quotes about wars about victims of genocide like water dehumanizes us, it's terrible, and her attitude to victims of genocide and love for Russian culture takes on a new context with how white supremacists see Russia and the genocide it commits as anti-woke America. So Grimes was never an anti-imperialist, she was a privileged Canadian girl who studied Russian culture and romanticized it and communism in her work.

Grimes strikes me as someone who uses their neurodivergence as an excuse and is therefore harming the community 😢
@michelleh.5225

Honestly, I don't even think she's neurodivergent. She has never come out and said she was. As someone who loves clout and getting attention for being "different", she would be the first to blast an official ADHD/autism diagnosis. Projecting that she's neurodivergent is what's harming the community.

@@michelleh.5225 I appreciate what you’re saying, but so many of us remain undiagnosed. We have to remember the numbers are so much higher than what is reported. So even if she doesn’t disclose it, we have no idea, so we have to do better at making spaces neurodiverse.

I will always love Geidi Primes, Halfaxa, Darkbloom, Visions, Artangels and some songs of Miss Anthropocene. That being said, it's sad what has happened with Grimes. I know she was always eccentric, but she's said a tooon of tone-deaf things currently.

she was THE waifu for the pre-conde nast P4K and 4chan's /mu/ board. those incels loved their manic pixie dream girl. idk to me, it's more about the cult of personality she has developed. without her aesthetics (omg the A E S T H E T I C S era was horrid), it's so mid i will always stan Azealia Banks, she's crazy asf and i'm ride or die! maybe the chicken deserved to be sacrificed idk i wasn't there E: 10:55 Fantano gave Visions like a 6/10 and he got SO much shit! also no, not a competent DJ. any big DJ set is pre-recorded. to do it live... at Coachella and she can't beat match?!?!?! wtf?? that's like so important! not all DJs do the hella cool transitions but you gotta do a little bit at least to keep the vibe going!

yeah Pitchfork was OBSESSED with her. honestly creepy, since it was all these white men in their 30s and she was in her early 20s at the time. I think they were chronically online incel bros that had seriously never met a real woman. I'm sure they were crushing hard on Feist, Cat Power, St Vincent, etc, but those women were much less accessible since they didn't use social media like Grimes did. It honestly infuriated me as a WOC because it made me realize how these white men put white women on pedestal (albeit in a sexualizing, objectifying way) and never even give non-white women the time of day, much less support WOC in the indie music industry.

@@michelleh.5225 you are so right! tbh it was still is pretty racist. like they used to fawn over every thin, white lady that played indie rock/ folk, but they would be so negative towards WOC who didn't play up to the white stereotypes of their race/ ethnicity. idk def feels like a lot of middle-class millennial spent so much time reinforcing racism to justify their rampart consumption bleghh

used to love her music so much especially Visions although the quirky indie persona always struck me as performative even b4 i knew she was a rich kid. this is pure speculation but i feel like she's given herself long term brain damage from stimulant abuse or something of the sort. she'd always brag about how she recorded Visions in 2 weeks during an adderall binge. whether that's true or not (2 weeks sounds impossible to me even if she was on pure freaking crystal meth) if she was abusing those drugs back then you know it's not gonna get any better once she's famous & under compounding pressure to perform. the way she acts online now + the way she can't even get through a simple DJ SET without falling apart , everyone says her music has gotten bad, idk something about it really reminds me of some people i know who abused uppers long term & now they're just kind of a deepfried shell of their former self. no amount of money can save you from neurotoxicity..
