I’m in tube amp Facebook groups and they’re all genuinely mad at this and all of a sudden they’re all saying how these videos have “always sounded horrible” despite the fact that this has only been happening for a year. I saw someone say “if he’s lying about this then he’s probably lying about other stuff”. Then some of them are mad that Josh can get pedals that typically are considered bad to sound good and they think he’s faking it. This stuff is crazy.

This is (sadly) not surprising. The internet is full of this outrage-based nonsense. There is enough room in the wide world of guitar for both digital and analog setups. I don't see why people feel the need to pledge some sort of foolish loyalty to one or the other. People just like to get mad. I don't get it but it is what it is.

I saw the kemper quite a few times and wondered what you guys were doing with it, if you own one they stick out like a sore thumb. Kempers are GREAT pedal platforms, the profiling is one thing but unlike a lot of digital gear, you can push the input just like a tube amp, they respond great to fuzzes, overdrive, anything a tube amp does. I run my board into my kemper first, then use the direct out into my interface as a DI as well as stereo outs so I have dry DI and amped sounds all the time. They feel awesome to play, sound great, and as Josh proved, if you don't KNOW you're hearing a kemper, all you hear is great tone.

If you like the sound of that amp and it's dependable, you made a good investment. Kempers and digital gear loses value fast. Tube amps retain value and can gain value on the used market. Just find the tones you like and stick with the amp you like. Noone really needs 30 amp sims. If you like one amp, you like one amp... I use a wall of tube and SS Orange and PV amps with many different speakers. No Kemper can replace my wall or my analog dirt and modulation. If you are a knob fiddler, and not into presets. Tube or SS Jfets heads are perfect. What amp and cab did you get?

I found a POD 2.0 with the floor board over the pandemic - $100. It has allowed me to play so much more than when I was using an amp in the house. Using MIDI and the Line 6 software you can really tweak the settings and dial in a great tone. I'm sure that is similar to how the other systems work. My Morning Glory is in front of the POD and sounds great into those models. In fact, you can put your whole pedal board in front of it just like an amp. My amps have been stowed away in the garage and I'm not mad. In fact, I think I'm happier. 97% of us are just hobbyists and don't need back breaking, ear blasting tube amps in their houses. You don't even need to spend the money on the newest modeler/profiler....The kidney bean is still viable. You can apply the extra savings to buying healthier food to make you strong so you can play better :)

a while back they did a video called "How We Record A Song" and it went over their recording process, I'm sure the gear had changed a bit since then but the process will still work. I've done a ton of live-to-tape style recordings and I can tell you the biggest factors are 1, have enough recording inputs with clean AD conversion (I personally used an allen and heath qu series for years, and am currently using a midas MR 18), good enough mics (Mics matter, but the ROI drops of real quick once you get into the expensive stuff), good mic placement, as much seperation between sources as possible (smaller amps, baffling, room placement, and DI whenever it's a good idea) and then a bit of post production. It's definitely attainable, but buying all that gear yourself even on the affordable side definitely stacks up. I did it because I'm passionate about recording.

(they share members so it makes sense they all do this). another local band recorded their new record with the stock logic clean fender sim, which according to the entire internet, sucks bad; its one of my favorite albums this year. its funny that most of the local bands i see are a bore and the ones i like use the cheapest stuff possible. not that expensive stuff makes you boring, but you can do so much with very little. also, want to shout out my crush 20, its a solid state beast and i record the headphone output instead of miking it.

@@mfkrwill I think that probably matters the context. In a dense recording or live mix, maybe hard to tell the difference. Standing side by side with a real amp, not difficult. But truth be told the last few JHS videos I've watched I really didn't like Josh's tone, and figure it always sounded that way, or it was the pedal he was using.

Do you ever feel like you just end up using the same couple amps or do you change it up enough for it to be worth it? I am a fan of my analog dirt, modulation and mix of Orange and PV amp wall. I could see it being great for quiet studio and limited short overseas gigs. But can you blend a few amps and cab and speaker tones at once? Or is it a more single mono or stereo amp set up? I love my amp wall, the tones blend well. However, I do have to move a wall. If I get a modeler, I would hope I can build a virtual wall .. thoughts?
@DaveDurango
@DaveDurango 2 жыл бұрын
@@KelticKabukiGirl I have two profiles I use fairly consistently, but I do use a lot of different ones. You can mix and match amps/cabinets and then there's endless tweaking from there if you so desire. A lot of people don't like the technical side of it, but without sounding like too much a jerk, it seems a lot of them older folks who may have struggles with tech. It's really not difficult at all to dial in a sound you want. Finding the right profile as a foundation can be a little tougher because of the way they were modeled and what guitar was used etc...but the rig manager, which is kind of like the itunes but for Kempers, is loaded with 30k+ profiles and there's so many out there to purchase. So, to answer your question, yeah, you can. People complain about a "feel" difference. A few times I've noticed it, but again, it depends on your profile, guitar, speaker, and location. I actually find that the Kemper improves on a lot of amps. I can't describe why, but it feels like it brings some amps to life.

Awesome show!!! Josh I don’t know if you could take this one more step further but if you get your hands on the Kemper Floor version it has a special hardware input that allows for some software witchcraft in the Kemper that gives you that magical guitar volume roll off/impedance thing that you get with something like a strat into a fuzz face. It’s available to enabled only on the floor version w/in the setting of the Kemper Fuzz stomp. I own a pretty killer fuzz collection and love that vol back off dynamic that I can get with my fuzz faces, but I’m shocked at how well they did when they released the Fuzz stomp a couple years ago once I tried this with the floor version. It’s legit.

This was brilliant! In the Grunge episode, I noticed that the amp was dialed in a really weird way (volume almost at zero, bass and mids maxed out), but it sounded great so I didn't think too much of it. Having seen the mini documentary on the history of JHS, I was wondering how the employees could work with you guys blasting the amps: this made a lot of sense.
