Cale Brooks is emerging as a formidable socialist intellectual in the Jacobin stable. Bhaskar Sunkara has facilitated a revival of American socialism, building on Bernie Sanders.

awesome voicepost. I wish we weren't so into our own idiosyncratic goals like GND and Pro Act when the fight was clearly about these giant bills that were actually under consideration. we could have (can still!) exercise a lot of leverage over Sinema, even if Manchin is mostly untouchable

After that opening speech, I'm starting to suspect that Cale's a Marxist. Seriously though, this is one of the best vids Jacobin has put out recently.

He IS a Marxist 😂 and makes that pretty clear most of the time. We need more Marxism infusing the ethos of the modern Left, because Marx gave us the blueprint for how to organize and win even if he intentionally gave us zero blueprint for what the socialist future might look like.

That's a great explanation of how Sweden works and a possible end goal of socialism; but the title got my hopes up for an answer about what to do now and he literally said "We can expect to lose a lot in the short term." He's certainly not wrong, but...

End goal? Sweden? I understand a social welfare state is better. But end goal? Sounds like some low end sad eschatology.

Once full automation happens it will be too late. Once the capitalist class no longer needs proletarian human labor we lose the power to withdraw our labor and the capitalist system is gonna be entrenched over the long term (unless we overthrow capitalism via violent revolution somehow).

Is there a book I can read that explains the development of Sweden’s labor unions? Now I want to know more about their history and if we can replicate them in the United States.

You can achieve your dreams! Do not let the Socialists despair ruin your life. The Socialists are failures and they want to put you in a box of doom. Life is amazing. America is a wonderful country. Keep trying, work hard towards something you love and you WILL FIND SUCCESS! The gloomy Socialists have always been a drain on the human spirit. They always will be. Don’t give up!

You can achieve your own special and unique dreams! Be an individual. Be your own unique self. Do not conform to the Socialist dogma of depression and gloom and poverty. Aspire for your greatest life…a Socialist will never off you your best life. Ever. ☺️🙏🏾

Nostalgia for the CCC for its “ecological dimension” among “highly educated liberals” is a bit ironic. As Neil M. Maher demonstrates in his history of the CCC, Nature’s New Deal, the program was criticized, not entirely inaccurately, by some professional ecologists at the time for its negative ecological impacts. Maher does link the CCC’s educational impacts to the launch of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

@@CaleBrooks A good review. Although I don’t think the reviewer do justice to the ecological- and essentially materialist- analysis of Leopold. Far more than either utilitarians or preservationists Leopold advanced an understanding of humans as part of ecological systems and an ethic of conservation that integrated social and ecological good while still appreciating that neither landscapes or humans are infinitely malleable, a mistake of too many social & economic experiments made in the name of Marxism as well as, of course, modern capitalism.
