So many influences from the obvious ones, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, but also nods to the likes of the Raspberries,Jellyfish etc. This album puts a fresh new spin on the word ‘Pop’ but it’s done with an assured consistency that belies their tender years.

Thank you for posting this review. When The Lemon Twigs first came out amid enormous hype, I bought their debut album. They seemed like exactly the sort of band I would love "on paper," but for whatever reason, it just didn't grab me, and I guessed I dismissed them as overhyped because were so young. I basically forgot about them in the ensuing years. I've discovered this record from your review, and it's terrific. Exactly the sort of thing I would like. Now, I have to go back and give the first one a re-listen.

I've been feeling very down of how most of the original, memorable, ambitious rock and pop is from decades past. That's why I appreciate you doing reviews of recent albums. I'd love to hear more modern ones if you ever come across them! Though it's hard to compete with the past as I can kind of see how we need time to go by to really no what's great or not.
@lrba552419 күн бұрын
I don't think rock has ever been more ambitious and varied as it is in today's underground. Black Country New Road, Black Midi/ Greep, Jeff Rosenstock, Jack White, Mount Eerie, The Strokes had a great album this decade etc. And that does not even scratch the surface really. Pop has fundamentally changed as a genre/ market so it's hard to compare, but even mainstream pop is more fresh than it's been in at least like 30 years.
@llamasarus119 күн бұрын
@@lrba5524 I'm up and down with some of those artists you've mentioned. As decent as they can be, hardly any of them release albums that compete with the ones from the past that Abbey talks about, though, at least not of this decade as of yet. It's not that I necessarily think "old is better" in principle; rather, the more time goes by, the better clarity we have in really knowing what we consider great or not. Apart from that, nothing new I've heard has made a dent in the zeitgeist due to their unique sound. The powers that be in the industry aren't really supporting or cultivating anything that hits the center of the venn diagram of being both highly ambitious and having broad appeal. The new artists I like are very niche, derivative of the past but still well-executed. We need something revolutionary in rock similar to what Nirvana gave the 90s or The Strokes gave the 00s.
@alanclayton92776 ай бұрын
three things i really like about them: i would buy that jacket in the shop window, featured in the golden years video, i would have that bass ( i AM going to get myself a beatles bass) and the third thing is how romantic i find that title 'how can i love her more' - just sweet and modern. if you get all these ingredients delivered to your door and proceed to use every single one, then you're going to have to come up with the tunes: i'm not sure they always do. I will listen to their nice sound again but only after i listen to wings to pet sounds to the zombies etc. the generational points were well made while i didn't want to be grumpy you did ask the question abby and yes like a grumpy thing i preferred all of the choices from mod month previously. i think the focus on two female artists was important though. so no VM next week. i can get pretty grumpy over the course of one week, see if i don't.

This band has gotten airplay on our thesocalsound FM in Los Angeles, so thanks for the biographical unravel, Abby. There doesn't seem to be a limit to what can be done with '60's-'70's style pop updates and many current bands mining this genre still manage to sound fresh. My love of Jellyfish (and subsequently Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Jason Faulkner) led me to them. You have great insights, great musical references (chord voicings, melody, instrument observations) and lastly, great production. Your enthusiastic Woodstock film/album review nearly left me out of breath. Sorry that this is so damned long, I can be quite verbose.😆 Anyway, thanks for the channel.

I'm envious of tour vinyl collection! I started collecting in 69' starting with Beatles, then the first Zepplin, and Montrose. I accumulated over a thousand albums of all styles. Just 2 years ago every one of them were stolen courtesy of Portland police and the metheads. Along with all CD's and 4 boxes of cassette tapes and the better part of my audiophile (McIntosh) system, irreplaceable speakers, and computers and music instruments galore.

I always stream the newer albums that you recommend, and while I sometimes get why they're popular, none have really resonated that much with me (Amy Winehouse excepted, since I already listened to her.) I liked the Lana Del Rey album more than I expected, having known her only from some underwhelming live clips, including the infamous "SNL" show. But this band, I really like. I showed some of their videos to my wife, Laura, and she's crazy about them now, too. We especially loved the video for "We Don't Know How to Fall in Place," with all the Monkees references. They remind me of one of my top five favorite artists, Marshall Crenshaw, who can also write insanely catchy pop songs that are influenced by the '60s and '70s but somehow uniquely his. He even covered ABBA's "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and it sounded like a Marshall Crenshaw song. They also remind me of the skinny tie, new wave bands I loved in the '80s, like Squeeze or The Records, that brought back fun, catchy pop tunes at a time when mainstream rock had become bloated, over-produced and self-important. And one of my all-time favorite bands featuring two quirky brothers, Sparks. I'm thrilled to see young people forming bands like this as a reaction against computerized, homogenized current mainstream music, just as I'm thrilled to see those like you who rebel against the depressing grey slobwear that passes for fashion. When I was a yout in the '70s, I was deeply into the culture and fashions of the '20s-'40s and didn't appreciate how good we had it. Have you ever heard Todd Rundgren's album "Deface the Music?" It's spot-on Beatles pastiches, his own version of The Rutles. I saw him live a few years ago in an all-star tribute to the White Album and was surprised at how funny he was. He was constantly horsing around, cracking up the audience and the other performers. Put it this way: he was the goofiest, silliest, hammiest person onstage, and the show included Mickey Dolenz! Finally, it was great seeing the Left Banke album. I saw a KZbin video recently that ranked it as one of 10 "perfect pop albums." Someone must really love your channel to send you that!

Speaking as a Gen Y kid who grew up listening to oldies radio, Beatles, the bubblegum music of Scooby-Doo, and tunes like "Love Makes the World Go Round" from The Powerpuff Girls, "Aye Aye Eyes" from Dexter's Lab, "I Think I Like You" from Angry Beavers, and "Green Tambourine" from Recess: School's Out, I'm very happy that '60s pop is considered so cool nowadays, especially by Gen Z, and that The Lemon Twigs are so successful. In the late '00s and the early '10s, it really seemed like retro music was being treated with hostility and mockery, if not plain ignorance. Even I was around twelve years old in 2001, I was harrassed for trying to dress like a greaser ('50s rock is also a big thing in my life), and was surrounded by electronic digital pop and rap music that seemed to be unwelcoming to someone with my tastes. I feel a little vindicated nowadays.

I love that you chose to focus on these guys and this album. I saw them this past May in Raleigh, NC, in a tiny basement club called Kings. To that point I'd only heard their album tracks and several KZbin hosts, esp Justin Hawkins, praising them highly. I liked what i heard, though it did feel a bit like talented pastiche AT FIRST. That live show made me a FULL BLOWN FAN, and I'm a musician and a veteran of hundreds of concerts. I could give you my concert resumé, but that's boring. Let's just say my 1st one in the U.S. was Queen's 1980 tour for The Game. My dad took me. I didn't have a car yet. Once I did, that's helped me go to so many shows, especially punk gigs from The Dickies at the Roxie on Sunset (I grew up in LA, obvi). So there was something just so real about them singing like on the album and not being perfect but being very good and convincing and down to earth and funny and cool, just very likeable guys and talented. Can't praise them enough. I know you completely wrote off Church Bells, but I love it very much, it's so ecstatic, like their version of Penny Lane. and the hidden word play in it: Ring, ring goes the bell = Ringo's the bell. Get it!!??

Listening to the album, I'm surprised at how they mimic different sounds of the 60s and 70s with each song. One song would sound like Beach Boys, but another would sound like The Hollies, The Byrds, Lennon-McCartney, Bigstar, Peter Rundgren, Simon and Garfunkel, Brian Wilson, or The Turtles. But it's authentic because the structure and melody of the songs are new; they just dress it up in these reminiscent styles. I appreciated it because I see no reason specific styles should be confined to certain periods. If you want to hear other artists who take from the styles of the 60s and 70s while maintaining their authenticity listen to Pearl Charles and Drugdealer.

They fill the space left by bands like Big Star and Jellyfish - and maybe EARLY Posies - who equally wore their influencves pretty heavily on their sleeves but weren't completely beholden to them when it came to creating something NEW and original. I mean, is there a better song than My Golden Years from the last three decades? Answer: No. No there isn't.

The story somewhere it is described in an article about her partnership with visual artist Jenna Gribbon. I wouldn't have been aware of Lemon Twigs if I wasn't listening to US underground radio (WFMU). I wouldn't believe such a thing like Lemon Twigs could exists in the twenty-tenths or twenty-twenties, especially without being trapped in retro nostalgia. In a way it is encouraging one could ride on -say- "certain traditions" and still be exiting.

God, the term "Industry Plant" always boils my blood. I heard someone accusing H.E.R. of that outside a St. Vincent concert and had to roll my eyes at it. My favorite, though, is when people say "oh, Taylor Swift/Billie Eilish had parents who had connections" to dismiss them. You know who else had connections in the family? LMFAO. Remember? They were sexy. And they knew it. And they party rocked and then disappeared, and their family connections were a lot stronger than "Taylor's dad knew a guy who could pass her demos along" or "Billie's family knew people through her brother working on Glee". You can get your foot in the door, sure. But to have a massive following and still building an undeniable legacy? That takes work and talent (and luck). And The Lemon Twigs are in no way some commercial product. Conan O'Brien has always had a good ear for new bands, and most of the people I've heard mention this band (this video, Elliot Roberts, and I believe Mic the Snare as well) are all people in the Millennial/Gen Z range, and there's enough Gen Z girlies making Tumblrs about how much they love Mike Nesmith or George Harrison to show that the youth craves this kind of stuff. So why don't people go ahead and shut the hell up before I plant my foot into the industry of THEIR ASS.
