It will be a good idea to make a video series about the rise of socialism in Europe in the aftermath of WWI and how it impacted the politics in Europe leading to WWII. How Hitler was supported to just avoid the Marxist camp taking over, How mussolini was elected in fear of socialism in the country. How many Germans chose to become communist, etc. a video about the competition and rivalry between capitalism and socialism starting from its philosophical ideas (i.e. Karl Marks) to the rise of soviet union and WWII. it will epic

Interestingly, American soldiers were only supposed to be in support roles during the invasion of Sicily. Bernard Montgomery was underwhelmed by their previous performance and didn’t think they could be trusted with combat missions. George Patton kept nagging Montgomery to let him do more until Monty relented and allowed him to carry out “limited reconnaissance operations”, which ended up being American soldiers taking over almost the entire island with the help of the mafia.

Or because the Americans were only meeting limited Italian resistance, while the Brits had to fight experienced German formations in hilly terrain. Americans "suddenly" slowed down, when they encountered German defense and rear guards on the western approaches to Messina.
@adamjaquay4279
@adamjaquay4279 Жыл бұрын
@@Spectification true. Also take into account the constricted terrain in that part of the island. US units were literally pilled on top of each other with very narrow frontages( same goes for our British cousin's) so no breakneck mobility warfare Patton excelled at there lol.
@scottkrater2131
@scottkrater2131 Жыл бұрын
Patton wasn't subordinate to Monty, and our British cousins pushed the Americans into rougher terrain so the 8th Army could get the lions share of fame in the conquest of Sicily. Patton still got to Messina before Montgomery fighting against the Germans. Italian troops weren't the only opposition to the Americans.

@@nicholasconder4703 Been a while since I've read the Bitter Victory, so I going to respectfully disagree on Montgomery. That he was concerned about casualties I do agree. What his motives were, I guess depends on whether your a Brit, or a Yank. I no longer have the book, so I can't reference it. Just going on memory. But in conclusion it's doesn't really matter since we(as in Allied forces)failed to stop the evacuation of the Germans from Sicily and wound up fighting them again on the mainland. But I do respect your argument.

"Better the devil you know then the devil you don't" I guess everyone gave everyone else an offer they cannot refuse. I gotta admit Lucky got balls for trying to land on Sicily first (beside an obvious attempt to leave prison early), but even if he allowed to do that, he will be the most protected army private in history. Imagine the order coming from Patton's higher up (Secretary of War Henry Stimson): put your best troop around this "Private", and I don't want him to get as much as a upset stomach, you hear me?

I once spoke to a family friend who was in Italy with the New Zealand Armoured Brigade. After the war they were down in the south, driving through Naples. He said they kept a German POW in the back of their truck with a big stick, because Italian thieves were so desperate in the immediate period after the war that they would leap off the roofs of buildings and into the trucks to steal army supplies, so the German was there to sort out these young ones.

Recently some Italian historians went back to write about this subject. Even if the common idea is that the mafia has returned to Italy thanks to the Allied Forces, some have tried to reduce the implication of the phenomenon. First of all, Don Calò wasn't the Boss of the entire Sicilian Mafia (there wasn't yet the title of "Capo dei Capi" as it does now) so he couldn't have guaranteed a safe landing to the Anglo-american troops. The decision to send Italian-American soldiers to the first line was mainly motivated by the desire not to frighten the Sicilian population letting them meet people who know their language and culture. Lastly, after the Allies took control of Sicily, they have some clashes with the bosses due to slow management of food supplies. According to organized crime historian Salvatore Lupo, Sicilian mobsters were too independent so the Americans organized some anti-mafia raids during their administration of the area. Only after the new Italian government was born and resumed control in the region, the Mafia returns to operate more freely.

The great disaster of the Sicily invasion was allowing 100,000 Germans to escape to the mainland who then occupied the country and tied up Allied resources until the end of the war, to say nothing of bringing great death and suffering to the Italian population, Messina should have been the objective of the invasion.

@@user-xu7tm2oo1t No, I meant decrease. Why would it increase? It's the individual unhinged criminals working independently you need to worry about as they're more likely to engage in violence. Organized criminal groups suppress actual violence a lot and stop it from spiralling out.

There is some reason to believe that the cooperation between the U.S. government and organized crime never stopped. Whitney Webb’s books are at least thought provoking.
