I think the guys on the video missed the points of the relevance of the three disciple. The 5 characters all represent the flaw of the humankind and their strengths and weaknesses which we have inherited from our ancestors. 1. Tansang is about purity, naivity, stubborness, and righteousness - he demonstrated that although these qualities are good in intention and nature, sometimes we need to see things from a different perceptive. one needs to appreciate the views from other so that we can understand and help them become enlightened. simply being correct doesnt mean you are right. The relationship between him and Monkey is a demonstration of different point of view and forgiveness to one another when you understand the differences and wrong doing. his indecisiveness is an example of all people that second guess themselves when faced with the decision to do the right things. 2. Monkey is representation of ambition, ego, aggression, mischievous, righteous, but lacking in the importance of consequences. he is confident and ambitious with strong belief in what he does is right way of doing things. even with all the aggression and violence, deep down, he has a sense of kindness, forgiveness, and ability to lean from mistakes. we see a persona of strength but when dealing with Tansang, he realise that sometimes, you need to compromise is necessary for the greater good. his transformation from the Monkey king to Wukong demonstrates that we can all change and needs someone of Tansang with patience to allow him to grow. Throughout his journeys, his request for help is also a lesson that even though you may be invincible, help can always be found if you ask and needed. there are always someone stronger. One of the key adventure is the Bone Demon where the conflict of righteousness and conflict between right and correct can be demonstrated between monkey and tansang. 3. 'Pigsy' Bajie is a symbol of the weaker side of human nature, where we are consumed by person gain, fortune, lust, and desire for comfort. many examples throughout the journey will demonstrate that for his person gain, betrayal and disregard of consequences is of no concern to him. but he does learn lessons as he makes them and he is not shy about admitting his fault. yet he continues to make them repeatedly. this is a flaw in all of us throughout life as we make the same mistakes over and over again, simply because of these flaws we see in Bajie. the journey is to allow Bajie to learn to let go of these lust, wants, and greed, so that we become closer to be enlightened. 4. 'sandy' Sha Wujing represent the naive yet hot tempered character. he is hard working and follows the other two brothers but does has his strength and flaws. his lack of sympathy or grey view of righteouness is what we see in many people. he learns from Monkey and Bajie on what one must do and do what it takes to be a better person. although he is not a significant character throughout this journey, is the character, or personality within all of us that sits quietly behind the scene and have no care to intervene when necessary. 5. the horse (use to be the ocean dragon), hard working and at the original horse.. minor minor character. keep in mind that both Pigsy and Sandy were all once heavenly gods that were sent down for wrong doings. this is a lesson that we may fall from grace but we are still important and to appreciate the day that we can return to grace, if we work hard and improve ourselves. Combining the whole journey, its really a journey of humankind and our personality put to test and show that we are all somewhat related to the characters and their traits. hope my view can shed some light...

Actually 72 is merely a figure number, the full name is Di Sha 72 transformation which was associated with the secret technique of ancient eastern astrology created by Taoists. It allows its user to transform into hundreds to thousands different forms using the Ling Qi (or Qi - pure energy running through the land, the sea and the sky) as conductor. It has an inferior version called Tian Gang 36 transformation which is mastered by one of his comrades in the Journey. The Taoist from whom Sun Wukong learned this trick among numerous other techniques is actually the most famous Xian (Taoists who are able to ascend them to the higher life form/plane through meditation and the comprehension of Tao/Dao - the dogma of universe and everything are called Xian or Xian Ren - the immortals) in all of Tian Ting (the heavenly plane that oversees the mundane). But it's a shame that Sun Wongkong ultimately joined the Buddism and became the awed Dou Zhan Sheng Fo (the Buddhist that governs all of war).

And pretty much everyone, including the author of the book, mostly forgets about the monk's horse (the white dragon horse), which was a dragon prince transformed into a horse as a punishment for eating the monk's original horse. After his introduction, he pretty much only did something in one chapter (transforming into a young woman and trying to rescue the monk), when Sun Wu Kong got kicked out of the group temporarily and the monk got captured by the Yellow Robe Demon.

Akira Toriyama did not abduct anything, dragonball is actually and purposely base on the Journey to the West. Goku being Sun Wukong, Bulma as Xuanzang, Oolong as Zhu Bajie and Yamcha Being Sha Wujing. The story then develops to what DBZ is today

To say that Bulma is Xuangzang (Tripitaka) is a huge insult to this historic holy monk. When the story begins Bulma is a higher class girl dreaming of marrying a handsome man, she's completely selfish and there's no mention at all of any search for enlightenment. There's Buddhist themes in DBZ though. The whole Kamisama/Picollo duality being an example of it. Or how this character changes from being a fallen namek, to a Demon King, to what later would qualify as a Dharma guardian.

I, too, used to love The Monkey King in my childhood (70s) and I believe it was responsible (together with The Water Margin) for my reflections on Taoism. I always saw their journey as a metaphor for our journey from materialism and arrogance towards enlightenment.

Story time: after the universe was created, the giant Pangu, who held up the skies, was dying (story for another time). So the first Daoist god created a giant iron pole of infinite mass capable of holding up the Milky Way as a fail safe in case the heavens were to fall again. The pole was forged from mystical black iron and caped in gold. Eventually as time passed, the original purpose of the pole was no longer needed and was acquired by king Yu the great. At this times it was the times of the great floods. Undersea earthquakes caused massive flooding in the kingdom of Yu. To solve this problem king Yu used the pole and stuck it in the middle of the ocean. It became known as the dìng hǎi shén zhēn, or simply the 定海神珍 (the mystical needle that nailed the ocean floor). With the pole at the center of the Eastern Sea, the floods finally stopped. And there it remained for thousands of years. Being so massive it could not be moved; not even the Eastern dragon king who lived there could move it. The iron pole stood by the Eastern dragon king's palace for so long it began to rust and turned a shade of bright red. However, being magic, the staff did not erode away and continued to calm the ocean floors until 500 years before the events in the famous Chinese epic: Journey to the West. And this is the origin story of the Ruyi Jingu Bang (the gold caped staff that followed your every whim). Sun Wukong actually obtained the staff fair and square as for the Eastern dragon king gave it to him willingly. What happened was that Wukong came looking for a weapon worthy of his great strength and dragon king Ao Guan was know for his treasures. Eventually growing tired of all the unworthy weapons that Ao Guan offered him, Wukong demanded for the heaviest weapon they had. Ao Guang's wife had a brilliant plan. She convinced her husband to offer Sun Wukong the giant iron pole that stood near their palace knowing that no one could possibly lift it. Ao Guan at first did not like this idea but then thought he had nothing to lose anyways since he thought the pole to be useless. He declared that that the iron pole was a great weapon of power not knowing that it really actually was, and told Wukong he could have it if he could lift it. Naturally Wukong was powerful enough to lift the then 17,550 lbs iron pole with ease. But what really made Ao Guan really regret his decision was when Wukong displayed the magical properties of the staff. After seeing how Wukong handled the magical glowing staff and how it could changeand grow to sizes that reached the heavens, Ao Guan realized what a mistake he made. Ao Guan became angry and later reported to heaven that Sun Wukong "stole" his "most prized possession". The story continues from there...

There is an pretty old animation of the Journey to the west and it was my absolute favourite show as a child, we have all DVDs at home and just a month ago I watched all episodes again and I felt so incresibly refreshed. The Monkey King (Wu Kong) was my absolute favorite hero and he is still my absolute favourite hero of all time. He is an incredibly deep character and I am so happy to be one of the thousands children who watched this amazing show/animation. No matter how much I love Dragonball, I can't stop to see Goku as a rip off of Wu Kong unfortunately. Wu Kong is ALWAYS going to be the most realistic, wise, still heroic and most human protagonist ever and I hope I'm not the only one who saw him as an idol and a role model as a child (and still now as a respective figure). A masterpiece, honestly.

CrimsonMeme haha not just Goku, there are so many animes that have the character Goku in them: Saiyuki (which is literally a rip off of the whole plot even the tittle is literally the japanese version of Xiyouji but its good though), Naruto (there's a minor character in there thats called Son Goku but he has nothing in commom with wukong apart from their name), Highschool DxD (the Goku in there that has literally the same backstory, personality etc. as Wukong), Inuyasha(who is said in the anime to be descendant of the legendary hero Sun Wukong) . There's probably more but these are just a few right out of my head.

My favourite is when Monkey calls a demon a "poofter". Also the episode "such a nice monster" where a monster just wants to be a cute puppy but everyone is afraid of him. With the episodes that were redubbed you can pick up all the original stories easier. I can watch movies on the topic without subtitles as I already know the storyline.

crazy mode also could be the the fake monkey king, six eared macaque. In original novel, both real and fake monkey kings r EXACTLY the same, even the so called unique weapon, the golden staff. And ppl r still debating about whether the Wu Kong who continues the journey is the real one or not. So, if the developers wants to do something “surprising”, they may go the way which the fake monkey king survived and player gonna play Wu Kong in some kinda next life to face the fake monkey king for revenge. Btw, to respond about why the other two (pig & ox) was on the journey. IMO those three are representing the three roots of evil in Buddhism. as for the monkey king, is DOSA (hate/aversion). the pig is LOBHA (greed) and the ox is MOHA (ignorant/delusion) last, the priest himself is a wisdom that can be use to bring/break free those 3 roots of evil. we, who haven't been enlighten yet are still holding these roots of evil, and with enough wisdom and practice, we can be freed from them. as you can tell, we are acting more/less like the monkey king when we are angry. then we also have the greed like the pig, and last we are somewhat ignorant with several things (well, not as much as the ox, i hope) the moral of this monkey king story is so deep that in most cases it actually teach people how to life a better life and learn life lesson from those 3, eerr.. 4 characters

I’d just like to make it clear dragonball was based on journey to the west and gokus original design was a monkey. Akira toriyama the creater has stated this before so I wouldn’t say stole.

I liked the video, but I think you've forgotten a very important detail... This book is actually inspired on a much older book (from the Tang dynasty), called Journey to the west in the Tang Dynasty... Actually, the monk is based on the true budist monk Xuanzang... The book from the 7 st century, tells the story of Xuanzang, a monk, who had some doubts about the chibese budist translations from the time, and he planed a journey to India, to read the texts, in their original language... He travelled for 16 years, and he passed by, what nowadays are Uzbequistan and Afganistan (yes, they went arround the Himalaias)... It's an amazing book for someone who enjoys antropology... Xuanzang, not only described the multiple cultures, some of their legends, what do they use to eat and wear ... and the most important, their cultural behaviors, and concluded that most of wich, was related to sun exposition and the fertility of their lands (no irony, the guy was a 7st century genius)... Of course, you've got a lot of references to budist temples... It's a great peace of oriental history.. Ps. Sorry about my english, i'm portuguese...

It's interesting how Goku was based on this guy, as was DB based on Journey to the West, but it really started to diverge later on, yet in Super it's kind of coming back around to be very Journey to the West-ish, mostly with Goku and the Gods and stuff.

2:24 of course dragon ball stole it. Dragon ball started as a parody of journey to the west in the first couple volumes. It's why goku has a flying cloud, an expanding staff and a monkey tail.

It would make sense if that “magical rock” was a space shuttle, “that came from the heavens”(up above) .... maybe the creator of Dragon Ball Akira Toriyama was onto something. They were on point with the planet Nibiru(beerus) that the old ancient Sumerians talked about..all this Hinduism, Buddhism a whole bunch of stuff are all connected.. even Star Wars based Han Solo on the monkey. Idk if there’s a right or wrong, whether what’s copying what, they’re all giving a story and testimony on everything. Like the Bible, Chinese mythology are but many cyphers willing to be decoded in smaller terms, for personal insights

DragonBall didn't steal the cloud or the Golden rod. Son Goku is basically Sun Wukong's story. But in Dragonball, they just made the myth a little different and took a more "action" turn. They myth in Japan and China still remain the same in both countries. They even still add Tianshan in there too haha, Krillin. I think....or is it the other half Monk? they also add the pig lol. but I didn't see the other fish guy or the dragon horse.

That is why I love the Chinese and Japanese culture, especially Chinese it's so rich and beautiful. Especially The Monkey King, my favorite character. Anything stories, items, pictures I love it. And side note, is it me or does everything from names of people and things, to just the phasing of the language itself sounds melodic to me, maybe it's the musician in me.
