The Detroit Red Wings put together a dynasty that was on the verge of winning five Stanley Cups in 13 years. Through incredible drafting, timely trades, and contract wizardry by their GM, they had created a team that made 25-straight playoffs without ever needing to take time off to rebuild.
And then it changed.
The guys they leaned on to excel into their late 30s and early 40s began retiring. Their replacements began retiring. The free agents Detroit brought in to fill the void started signing elsewhere. The second-tier guys Detroit signed in their place didn’t produce. And the contracts given to them added up and prevented a youth movement from spreading its wings. The front office failed to catch on to a demise already underway and instead believed if they kept the streak alive and made the playoffs, then anything could happen.
But finally, in 2017, they missed the postseason and began doing so in dramatic fashion. There’s finally hope with an old face for a new GM, but Holland put the team in enough cap hell it won’t be a quick recovery.

Among the current or recent former Red Wings with no-trade clauses in their (too long, too expensive) contracts: Justin Abdelkader, Gustav Nyquist, Darren Helm, Danny DeKeyser, Jonathan Ericsson. An absolute recipe for long-term occupancy in the basement. And it's entirely on Ken Holland.

The 2002 Detroit Red Wings were the best team I've ever seen in my years watching hockey. Dominik Hasek, Chris Chelios, Niklas Lidstrom, Pavel Datsyuk, Brendan Shanahan, Brett Hull, Igor Larionov, Steve Yzerman, Sergei Federov, Luc Robataille (that's 10 Hall of Famers on one team!). Hell, even their role players, Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Darren McCarty, Mathieu Dandenault, Tomas Holmstrom, Manny Legace as a back-up, were all excellent in their roles. And they could play really well together and beat you any way they liked. They were tough, they had finesse, they had shooting and they were great defensively. You'd never have a team like that now in the salary cap era. But one of the good things about that team was its owner was really involved and willing to spend money. I'm a bit surprised Mike Ilitch wasn't mentioned in this video. I think his death played a role too.

It's incredible how that team won ONE game in their final 10 and lost the first two playoff games to Vancouver. Then they flipped a switch.
@BloggerMusicMan
@BloggerMusicMan 5 жыл бұрын
@@dustyb58 Getting a bit too confident I guess. They still finished with 116 points and the Presidents Trophy despite not doing well down the stretch. I guess it took losing those two playoff games to realize they had to wake up. That Vancouver team was a good eight seed too. They had one of the better lines in hockey at that point and a solid defence corps.
@kdutch98
@kdutch98 5 жыл бұрын
@@BloggerMusicMan No, they didn't get too confident. They had the Presidents trophy wrapped up with about 12 games left to play, so Scotty Bowman started resting players. A LOT. And it almost bit them in the ass. But, after losing the first 2 games at home to Vancouver, they caught a break in Game 3, with the Lidstrom shot.....THEN they flipped on the switch. But, when the team REALLY flipped on the switch, was when they fell behind Colorado 3 games to 2 in the Conference Finals. Colorado didn't score a single goal after game 5.

@@BloggerMusicMan that Canucks team was on fire going into the playoffs that year too. Might have pulled off the upset too had Cloutier not allowed that centre ice goal to Lidstrom in game 3. That completely changed the tide of that series. I still miss those West Coast Express days though.
@BloggerMusicMan
@BloggerMusicMan 5 жыл бұрын
@@kdutch98 The point about Bowman resting his players is a really good point for why they lost most of their last 10 games. I'll definitely take that into consideration. I know that's how the Vancouver series went chronologically, but I'm not a fan of explanations that involve one moment changing the tide in a series. Martin Brodeur gave up a goal in the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals that was similar in a lot of ways (weak shot, second period Game 3, gives the Ducks a 2-1 lead) and the Devils still went on to win. I think probably because the Devils were a superior and experienced team. And don't get me wrong, as important as the Lidstrom goal was in deciding Game 3, it's still Vancouver's prerogative to get it together for games 4, 5 and 6, which either they didn't do, Detroit just played better or (probably) a mix of both. The Colorado point is interesting. I think falling behind in a series, not just in games, is more convincing as an explanation for why that lights a fire under a team. Especially when it's potentially do or die. That Colorado team was also a defending Stanley Cup champion with a very stacked roster in itself, so falling behind to them was not that shocking to begin with. Everyone knew that series was going to be competitive.

What I find so incredible about this is that even when the team was falling apart, they were still able to make the playoffs for 25 consecutive years. I think that really speaks to the talents of core players like Nick Lidstrom, Pavel Datsuyk, and Henrik Zetterberg most of all.

@@filipnassen9076 They just didn't utilize their rookie players at the time. Nyquist, Tatar are both still very good NHL players right now and if things went the way they should've they both wouldve blossomed into even better players if Ken Holland just had faith and was smart with them. They brought them up late they were both like 23 or 24 years old when they made the wings. When instead they should've been brought up when they were both about 21 or 22 years old because they were both ready then but again all that is mainly because Ken Holland didn't want to disrupt the core players at the time when Nyquist and Tatar were there to kick off a new Era for the wings and were the guys to build around at that time. I distinctly remeber me and my brothers talking about this when tatar and Nyquist started getting 22 23ish years old that Ken Holland and Babcock were waiting to long to make them full time Red Wings. They had Zetterberg til like 2018, so to say they couldn't have made the playoffs each year after it ended given the circumstances is laughable because they very well could have kept that train rolling but Ken Holland was not good at knowing when to bring players up from the AHL and Mike Babcock didn't help with that either because it should've been a priority at the time. They'll get back to their winning ways this season.

as a 32-year old Red Wings fan, I must admit that I'm not mad about the rebuild/end of the dynasty. I'm grateful that I was able to witness my team win championships as a child in 97/98, teen in 2002, and college kid in 2008. so many RW fans either are too young to remember the 90s cups, or old enough to remember the Dead Wings era. I feel blessed to have been born when I was born. Sure, it sucks that it all fell apart, but man, FOUR CUPS in my lifetime? That was fun/awesome and I think someday Stevie will get us back there. One thing lots of people forget about the playoff streak is just how much longer it _could have_ been: Between 1967 and 1983 the "Dead Wings", as people called them then, only made the playoffs twice, in 1970 (losing to Chicago) and in 1978 (beating Atlanta then losing to Montreal). After that though it was like a switch flipped, and between 1984 and 2016 the Wings _missed_ the postseason just twice, in 1986 and 1990. That's *29 out of 32* seasons where they saw the playoffs.

Mike Ilitch was the most important piece to the Wings' success. Scotty Bowman elevated the team to championship level, and their Swedish scout whose name I forget (Andersson, maybe?) kept the European pipeline flowing by securing amazing players late in rounds/drafts. When they won the cup in 2008 I think Brad Stuart was the only player on the roster that had been drafted in the first round (and not by Detroit), and remember Lidstrom and Franzen were 3rd rounders, Datsyuk a 6th rounder, Zetterberg 7th round, Holmstrom 10th, and so on. Yes they benefited from free agency and trading for players that wanted to come to Detroit to win a cup. But it's hard to argue that they just bought their success when in some aspects it was the opposite, many players (e.g., Lidstrom) agreed to play for less money and the team was loaded with star players they had drafted themselves in late rounds. It's especially impressive given that they often had fewer draft picks and, due to their success, their draft picks were always toward the end of each round.

Even funner fact. Big Hoss joined the Wings after his Penguins lost to them in the '08 finals. A year later he makes it back to the SCF, a rematch against his former Penguins team, losing a heartbreaking game 7. Third time's the charm for Hossa, as he finally finds a home with the Blackhawks the next year and makes it back to the finals, 3 years consecutively, to win his first Stanley Cup.

I love the video, but there’s some stuff worth mentioning that’s left out. 1. Owner Mike Illitch was the reason for the bad contracts and prolonging the rebuild we needed after the 2013 season. He demanded we compete, as would his other team, the Detroit Tigers. It’s not a coincidence that 2 teams from the same city with the same owner made the same poor decisions. He signed aging vet Victor Martinez over Dave Dombrowski’s head the same way he pushed for Ericsson and Abdelkader to get lengthy extensions. 2. Johan Franzen’s concussion issues should be at the forefront of the collapse. We picked him over Hossa and then watched Franzen kill himself to get on the ice. He quite literally can’t skate again because of brain trauma. If Hossa was there instead, we probably win in 2013. If neither are there, we would have been able to overpay Suter/Parise, but they likely still go to Minnesota. Nonetheless, I have a genuine theory that the Franzen signing changed the entire NHL post lockout. If that move is different, the entire league changes. 3. It’s unfair to leave out the severity of our lack of first round draft picks from 2000-2009. We had 3 in 10 years while others had 3 in the same year. Coupled with the career ending health scare for our future #1 defenseman in Jiri Fischer back in the mid 2000’s, the organization couldn’t grow talent on the back end that led to our collapse.

For the Phillies, on one hand I agree that would make an interesting video to see how horribly we fell to from what we had with 2008 and how good we were in the years after. On the other hand, we're the favorites to win the division and hopefully with players like Hoskins, Harper and Segura, I do feel a World Series is destined for this team in due time. Also, I asked them on Twitter if they would be doing a collapse video on the LA Kings, and they said they have it on the list. So it sounds like that one's coming eventually.

It helped that Detroit had a payroll 2-3 times higher than most teams. Great drafting helped

I love the Collapse series, but I have never really felt for the teams as I never cared about any of them. This is not the case now. I love the Red Wings (not my team, ut the team that got me into hockey) and this episode makes me really sad! Great work, keep it up!

They made the playoffs for 25 consecutive years.... 1991-2016. Before 2016 I'd have never experienced the NHL playoffs without the wings... simply amazing

I love my red wings. Try not to ever miss a game even though they are in a rebuild and are hard to watch nowadays. Pavel datsuk was an amazing player and we may never see another guy like him.
