Absolutely correct. I can only imagine that if he had a desk in the back office of the Bing, he has a job on the payroll here. Same with Beansie’s pizza joints being a cash business, isn’t hard to imagine Tony putting money through the bar and getting paid in clean cash out of it in some kind of management capacity.

The Tony's major gambling addiction storyline in the final season of the show I felt was awkward and just came out of nowhere. There was no build up to it at all and we knew Tony gambled and made money off of gambling but it was usually through them being the bookie's.

@epserafdta9846
@epserafdta9846 10 ай бұрын
It actually was one of the most important storylines and it didn't came out of nowhere (although it may easily come out as that). This was the result of Tony's image of his father being completely crushed by the meeting with Fran Feldstein, and with that all the morals that Tony has ever known. Season 6b shows crearly the distancing of Tony from all his father figures, that including his own father. This shows the decline of Tony and his arc of eventually becoming an even worse person than he was at the start, and his incapacity to change that was remarked in season 6a

Not just money but easy money, the comparison to Tony being Dr. Cusimano next door. What distinguishes OC is love of money + hatred of work. Like when Vito tried honest manual labor & gave up after an hour or so. Or when Jackie Jr. dropped out of Rutgers premed because he couldn’t be bothered to study “nucleotides.”

I think Tony had a share in Barone because Dick was in debt from loan sharking. He got his share of his ownership by way of the salary and the medical insurance. But he was also responsible for the extortion of the customers. He could also take fuel and make extra cash by arranging to put red-tag medical waste into landfill and dispose of asbestos through Barones landfill connections. He wasn't just an employee. Thats why he got a severance from Cinelli when Phil edged in after that dipchip Jason got the company

Hesh wasn't "taxed" till Junior. So, he never was an income source for Tony. Supposedly, because he was a friend of Johnny Boy and gave them financial advice, but Hesh's situation never really made much sense. Hesh would have been competition with Tony's loan sharks and a net negative to Tony's income. For the sporting goods store, it declared bankruptcy and Tony was never the owner or officially associated with it. Tony was having the T1000 order as much inventory as possible (business to business sales are done via terms, with 45, 90, or more days to pay for the inventory), and then Tony was stealing/taking all the inventory to sell elsewhere or firesale it in the store for quick repayment to Tony, but the manufacturers will never be paid, and the store will default. Thus, the sporting goods store wasn't used to launder money (show income to the IRS), as there wouldn't be any official income and Tony wouldn't want to be an owner of it (since the owner was likely going to be arrested).
@SubManifest
@SubManifest 9 ай бұрын
It’s established on the first few episodes that 10% of Hesh’s shy is directly related to their families sports book. It’s a partnership and Tony states this directly.
@avernvrey7422
@avernvrey7422 9 ай бұрын
@@SubManifest That number doesn't make much sense either. What's the other 90%? Loan sharks overwhelmingly provide illegal betting loans as that's not something you can get from elsewhere. Anyway, "direct competition with Tony's loan sharks." The issue is this claim that Hesh "is not taxed," (no percentage of his earning is turned over) and of course he can't be made, so he doesn't kick up to anyone. Maybe, the argument could be that he provides liquidity for the gamblers to keep spending? but really that would be the place for loan sharks who do kick to Tony. All in all, if he isn't taxed he's not contributing to Tony (or Junior before he demanded it). Real reason he's there is homage to Hyman Roth.

I've always been curious how the executive game works. I'm guessing that the house takes a cut of each pot and in return provides the venue, food and drink, etc. What I don't get is why half the players are in Tony's crew. The other players know this. Why don't they think they are getting hustled? All they have to do is drag the game out as long as possible and no matter who wins the hands, eventually the house gets all the money. The other players are shown to be good at cards, so what am I missing here?
@osman732
@osman732 10 ай бұрын
They are selling the thrill of hanging out and gambling in illicit games with real gangsters and high rollers. Junior compares it to credit cards when he explains the origins to Tony "they juice you to death, and you thank em for letting you have a card. You'd rather be juiced then pay all at once." The players know they are being squeezed, but they can afford it, they're in it for the thrill, stories and memories. The crew also makes occasional big money on executive stunads like Davey who lose big and have businesses that can be busted out.
@JGD714
@JGD714 10 ай бұрын
Cut of each pot indeed, plus getting gambling addicts to loan money to. As for the why, yeah it's the thrill like the other guy said, but I'd think it's a different kind of thrill. It's a gambling thrill. You know you're walking into the house where the odds are against you. That makes winning feel even better. It's just that, my guy. Same thing that makes Las Vegas run.

It’s called a rake. Every hand they take a small cut. It’s how are casino works and how the underground game works. You see sunshine, take a black Shep and put it in the can. Also, Tony extended $45,000 in credit to Dave’s who lost it at the game. They also work together, cell and poly create action. And later, when they bring in people like JT, Dolan, and other bad players, they keep them up against good players, like Vito, who is a good card player. Vito then kicks up part of his winnings

it took me 29 years, but i finally watched the sopranos. what a wonderful series, it did drag on at some parts but overall its in my top 5 tv shows of all time. Kind of gave me the "Lost" Tv show vibes in terms of symbology and the question of death/ coming to terms with death. Very interesting and thought provoking1 My grandpa was actually an extra in the show sitting in a diner , He is also John Gotti's second cousin. i dont really know how to feel about Gotti given the circumstances but its still a cool thing in my book. He owned a auto body shop in Colonia Nj for close to 60 years and is still built like a bag of concrete in his 80's, we aren't that close so i have no idea if he is connected , when i do see him he doesnt speak about anything involving his personal life. I grew up in sparta NJ and moved to union NJ when i was 17 so seeing this show was a long time coming. I binged the whole series in like 2 weeks 🤣

Bada-Bing was "owned" and run by Silvio. But Tony was the real owner and a salaried employee

It's almost certainly just regular ol organized crime stuff. Today they'd be pulling a lotta online schemes like most of La Cosa Nostra is, they've modernized a lot and bring in tons of cash today because of it while the risks are significantly lower than ever warring is near non-existent at this point because of it even if many reliable sources of income like taxing criminals, keeping book, debt collection, counterfitting, etc, are still common. Most of which is mundane and doesn't make for good TV. But we also just don't see a lotta that stuff cause it's simply not important to the story, we don't even see the bulk of the family cause that's not the point. It's not a mafia show, it's a story that happens to have characters that are in the mafia. One big one is providing protection for other criminals outside of LCN. We see Chrissy shake down drug dealers, gambling operations outside LCN pay a tax, hitmen pay for protection, brothels, etc. That's a significant revenue stream cause even high level traffickers will need to pay for protection and access to a given market. If LCN runs a port and a cartel wants to run dope through it they need to find an agreement that works for both parties. Like is said in that famous Goodfellas' scene, they're basically enforcement for people that can't go to the pigs.

The first episode of a fourth season is not a "pilot". The Stugots is a boat, not a yacht. You don't have the makings of a varsity channel.

I have a question if someone could help me out. Why in the modern day would someone go to an illegal gambling den when surely there are plenty of legal gambling places someone could go to?

When you go to a casino to play cards, you will be up against stiffer competition. If you can get into good underground games, there are often week players that are more exploitable. For things like betting on sports, the casino wants you to pay in cash where your local book he takes credit. The additional benefits are you’re not reporting the income or pay taxes on it

Also all those points aside, the real reason people go is private atmosphere. Known players, better food and service, controlled environment. Really if you have a good private game, why go to a casino?

I watched a documentary about the "real" Tony Soprano. An FBI agent said the mafia gambling dens provided the best odds to attract players. I guess the lack of taxes allowed that.
