How the US Military Responded to my first video, and the story behind making and publishing it.

Ten Days after I published my first video, the US Military reached out to me through Lieutenant General Telita Crosland. This video is a report on what we discussed and what she is doing to make a real difference. I also go into why I used the language of 'tribalism' during my presentation to the Residency Program Directors in October of 2023. Again, I would encourage anyone challenging one of my videos to watch the entire presentation before commenting. #Triplerspecial

I am a retired battalion chief of a fire department. And before I retired, I’ve been through some of the same things that you described in your career. I’ve also been through things as a captain as well. I even had to get a lawyer, that’s how bad things got. And at the end, I came out on top because, I had righteousness going for me. It’s not easy working in the military/paramilitary (Police/fire) Organizations as a black person.

I share the same sentiments. As a Black naturalized U.S. citizen I saw how they were trying to set me up and decided it was not worth being a Correction Officer so, after ten years I ended my career with the state of Rhode Island in 2023. Other officers advised me not to quit saying if I did they win but, if they were in my shoes and saw how they were attempting to accuse me of sexual misconduct, they would have done the same. I know of a lieutenant (who is a naturalized U.S.citizen like myself), that works in Corrections somewhere in New England, and has been accused of sexual misconduct against a White lady. The story I have heard is: he was teaching rookie officers how to do a pat down on an inmate, demonstrating it on a White female Officer. A group of White officers pressured the White female officer to write a report accussing the lieutenant of touching her inappropriately. They also wrote reports lying that they observed the lieutenant touching the female officer inappropriately. He has that blemish on his record and the department has used it against him by passing him over for promotion (for Correctional Officer Captain) on many occasions. Racism is complex so be careful in everything you do in a professional settings.

Thank you so much for sharing this. My last 5 years as a certified nurse midwife from 2015-2020 went through this. It is still continuing, I have been working with a lawyer since May 2020. You can describe it as complex too. Some coworkers and peers are so incompetent, they will do anything in return for a promotion. Imagine people you trust at work lying on official reports about your job performance, even though you work hard because you know as a Black person you are conditioned to work twice as hard to be promoted. Imagine you meeting an administrator at his request to show you a folder that he claims contains reports from your immediate supervisor. He tells you that you can trust him. After the meeting, a couple of coworkers who knows you are being undermined tell you to be careful in everything you do because they have heard other coworkers are writing reports full of lies, against you, even though you had a great reputation for going above and beyond your normal duties. That's how complex racism is.

As a non military, legally trained physician to be, I can assure you that this is happening to black professionals of every kind. It's painful, so very painful, and not just the racism but the apathy and desire by peers to just say out of it, was equally if not more hurtful. It's isolating. Makes you question your worth, abilities, and relationships with others. And then we burden the only other ppl who can understand, ppl who are themselves going through their own similar hell. Thank you so much for sharing this. It took years of workplace violence and abuse for me to understand that *I'm not the problem.* But I know someone else really needs to see your first video bc they don't yet understand what took me forever to understand. And it doesn’t help that public schools keep perpetuating racism by admission of mostly whites to Honor and Advance Placement Classes. I have been the lead engineer in multiple major projects. I had two experiences where the flag officers prepared awards for white individuals who were not the lead and played a minor role in the projects. One came clean and stated I was responsible for the project and one took the credit. This was not an oversight, both slights were intentional. I never received either awards which includes a monetary reward.

I equate the four person diagram to Red being Mr. Smith, the Orange as Cypher (knows whats going on, but enjoys the benefits anyway), the Yellow as all the NPCs and the Green as the those from Zion. I was in the Infantry (11M) from 97 to 02. The bias and racism was tremendous, but I picked up the pattern quick. I could go deep into it, but I don't want to write an essay here. The biggest problem I saw on my end is that they (white soldiers) have a common practice making sure Black soldiers don't become Dismounts. Seeing one is extremely rare. And when a Company dissolved to build up the other Companies' numbers, they loaded S-3 with nothing but Black soldiers and E-5s with an incompetent white E-6 as the NCOIC.

I had some of the same issues, especially being the only Black female, and one BM. And it was though, we weren’t there; therefore, we weren’t given a chance for promotion. But at least I fought for opportunities! We can’t remain silent, because there’s a lot of unconscious biases, regarding something they’re never experienced!! For example, A WW said, her father was a racist, but a good man!😂 Lastly, a word of encouragement, “the first shall be last, and the last shall be first” in our lifetime!!😀

Perhaps your unfamiliar with the esprit de corps of military service but this is an inappropriate response in light of his detailed explanation of his (AND OTHERS) journey! It shouldn't take more of a certain archetype - as it pertains to the equally yoked officer community of the the United States Army - in order to assure that a sworn officer is NOT subjected to bias. This isn't a construction site or the police force in Jackson, MS - it's the U.S. Military service (you know, Colin Powell; Tuskegee Airman, et al). Add to that truth the known favor that normally goes along with being a (legacy) West Point graduate...and there's definitely a problem - Houston.

Very good presentations! When I watched your first video, I was very pissed that this kind of thing was still going on in the military (and outside of the military). While I agree that the solutions that were made are a good start. I am amazed at how little progress has occurred since I went through the process! And, as you mentioned, the situation doesn't end after graduation from residency. For the military, the damage is incalculable, since the numbers are small, and risk is great in terms of loss of productive years, possible maiming, and even death. There has to be a method that can be used to vet potential leadership to weed out adherents to white supremacy. How can we recommend the military as a career to our friends and family without the assurance that such instances have been addressed?

I’m so moved by both videos. I’m a black resident and nothing but providence has saved me from a tripler special. I got into one of the elite residency programs and having black senior residents who were respected saved me as an intern from the permanent mark of early perceived incompetence that passed for inexperience in my colleagues. Later, my mentors and greatest sponsors happened to be the most influential people in the institution and my specialty of choice nationally. My double blessing is truly not due to my own personal talent and unfortunately I’ve met other black residents, legitimately more intelligent than myself who simply didn’t have the early support and didn’t get into the good graces of the right sponsors. It shouldn’t be due to chance that my residency experience can basically be that of any white resident. My experience should just be normal

My God...Dr. Jones, you are a master in articulating 'Racism and Subtle Racism' . I have never seen or heard it in a way that is not abrasive and doesn't seem like the typical 'Angry Black Man'. It's very easy to follow. Also, I love how you explain tribalism because it's also currently being used in a way to defuse the issues and stress most all black people in America deals with or have dealt with in their professional careers. #thankyoubrotha

It's called righteous indignation. It takes an enormous amount of commitment to exercise self-restraint when being treated unfairly. The call you an "Angry Black Man," to shame you arbitrarily so, we don't care. It's natural for anyone human being to lash out when they are being hurt.

I agree with most of what you said but we can do it on our own. Our problem is that we want acceptance from “White” people. When we can and should be building our own communities, our own hospitals, our own schools and not try to change “White” people to love us more.

I experienced the #Triplerspecial while working as an anesthesia tech at a university hospital. Tribalism can make one so passionate about becoming a physician rethink the entire career field in general. One of the attending surgeons (black female) who I would considered a mentor continued to encourage and support until I gave my 2 weeks. I experience the same while enlisted and most of the black Marines I considered mentors got out. It felt like a cultural shift happened.

Hey! This is Dr Jones from an alternate account. I was actually thinking about making a video about that. I probably will. The gist of my opinion on the matter is… if you are morally/ethically ok with being part of the United States’ military apparatus. I would say that HPSP is almost definitely a net win. The absence of debt.. and the safety net in the unfortunate event of a Tripler special… are financial benefits. The ability to travel and variety of novel experiences would be another. I’ll expand on this in the future.

It is absolute folly to think that staying in a racist system and 'proving' oneself changes much. It may change some things but it is too slow. People are compromised by financial need so it is most important to prioritize avoidance of dependence on racist idiots.

Thank you for falling on the sword, Sir. Some may not concur, but as a former active duty Marine I understand how moving against leadership alienates us from the very comrades we'd willingly die for. Sadly, at 61 years old I'm no longer able to purse my lips and say "we have to fight for change" - as their(sic) will be no “change” of any significance. My reality has become - "We must FIGHT for the interest of our opportunities and those of our ancestors" - and our ancestors must reciprocate that same steely resolve to honor their predecessors. I accept the fact that the majority has no intention of allowing real change in the status quo. In fact, they'll spend more time bellyaching about mandated advantages designed to force the perception of progress, than they'll spend taking inventory of the avalanche of bias that has, and will continue to, permeate this place where "All Men are Created Equal." I accept the reality that I must "count it all joy" with the full knowledge that all shall indeed have their day of reckoning… Last month my grandson graduated from Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX. I spent a ton of time trying to convince him to pursue an appointment to Annapolis, but he was only offered by West Point (football) - which he essentially turned down! It broke my heart when he said, "I'm not willing to die for this country!" But as fate would have it I stumbled upon your first video. I began to think maybe my young grandson lives within a far more enlightened reality than I do. Briefly I surmised, "Maybe the injustice(s) encountered by Donald Trump will serve as an impetus for those who possess the collective power to flip these repressive paradigms?" But this video forced me to do an about face. Let's face it, most of this ilk sympathizes with those who attacked the capitol, but condemns those ('others") who peacefully kneel in protest. The real evidence of their mindset is the response of your fellow 'ring knockers' with their refusal to wade into the battle. Their collective silence and willingness ignore a classmate, and fellow soldier, as he bled-out his heart at that dais - violates every element of the honor code I was cultivated to embed in my soul. I am CERTAIN that you, Sir, have lived by that code your entire career: and I salute you. Semper Fi - Soldier.

Many of them were denied commands or they got substandard OER’s which were career killers. I respect you for letting this scourge be known to the public. Great video Doc. You present this better than I’ve seen. But your color system is wrong IMO. They all change colors depending on the situation. It’s about positioning, greens turn into orange/Red when they aren’t first in line or you beat them out. You’re easy to fight for and help when you aren’t competitive. Also, the lower classes have always entertained, so the sports analogy, isn't quite apples to apples. I encourage you to keep your channel going with diverse topics, I appreciate your perspective.

I agree that the sports analogy has its limitations. Because they can concede our athletic ability while still holding the rest of us as intellectually inferior. I can also see that many members of the empower majority will fail to take a stand when we really need them to, shifting allegiances and loyalties to suit their situation. It's very sad.

On this thread as multiple commenters speak their truth regarding this topic, you can feel the collective psycholgical trauma if not a form of outright PTSD experienced by so many black people as they endeavor to simply learn and do their job. As my dad used to say, being Black isn't for the weak. Thank you for your project and what you are doing to be a change agent. For all of us, it is important to find ways to tell the story, inform and change the system. In the words of Zora Neale Hurston ... "If you are silent about your pain, they'll kill you and say you enjoyed it."

Black health care workers in the military in general need to speak out; docs, PA’s, & Nurses. The first question a black nurse asked me when I was an enlisted in the airforce was “are you sure you want to do this” when I was discussing career options before o separated. I could have kicked myself for not properly interpreting her question, I didn’t understand until I actually got accepted into a program & then even more so after graduation. I learned 2 lessons; how you’re perceived & how you’re received, both are questionable as it really doesn’t seem to matter what level you perform at, you are viewed the same. SMDH. My only saving grace is that I wisely decided not to pursue this career in the military, it would have been 10 times worse.
