How the Verge PC SHOULD have looked

The Verge took a stab at building a custom PC last week. And while it turned on, it reeeally shouldn't have been a tutorial.
This isn't necessarily a reaction video... more of a counter-build video. This is what the Verge custom PC should have looked like when finished. In this quasi tutorial, I go through the proper tools you'll need, proper handling and installation of many key components, and the finer points of thermal paste application.
What am I drinking?
To celebrate the new office, and because my Ten Forward Vodka arrived on Monday, I'm having a Caipiroska. Halve a lime and cut into 6 wedges, drop those into the bottom of a rocks glass with a sugar cube and muddle. Fill the glass with crushed ice, then add 2oz of Vodka. stir gently, then fill again with crushed ice. Garnish with a lime wheel and a sprig of mint.
If you're interested in any of the parts featured, you can pick them up here:

A customer once brought me a machine to fix that he'd 'built' himself. Like Verge's video, soooooo many errors. First and foremost, he'd installed the motherboard with the pink anti-static foam sheet from the bag it shipped in sandwiched between the board and the case. He'd simply poked holes through the foam to install three of the six standoffs. Second - he'd spooged THE ENTIRE TUBE of thermal paste onto the CPU. When I asked him why he'd used so much, his reply was, 'That's what was in the box. I figured it was the right amount." Third, the PSU +4 mobo connector was dangling free, unconnected. Oh, and by the way, SERIOUS overkill on the PSU. 1000 watts. 500-600 would have been completely adequate. Fourth, the video card was not seated properly. And finally, there was ZERO cable management. On one hand, cable management wasn't what it is today - there weren't places to hide cables behind the mobo tray and so forth - but even then, most competent techies would try to bundle the cables neatly and tuck any excess into an empty drive bay (particularly the old ribbon cables). Not this guy; they were just dangling down.

@xaenon
@xaenon 5 жыл бұрын
@@gigabytee I'll admit it was a lot more work that I really wanted to do. And I was surprised, too, when it turned out to be functional. I seriously feared he'd blowed up his board when I first put it on my bench. The video card being improperly seated and unconnected +4 cable were obvious from the word go, but correcting these accomplished nothing. I plugged in my old 'test' video card, and still nothing. Known-good PSU - nothing. Checked all the jumpers (yes, older board - this was some time ago). Reseated RAM. Checked power-on and reset switches. Everything seemed okay, but still no pulse. Pulled the mobo out - that's when I discovered that antistatic foam up behind it and the missing standoffs.. Removed the static foam, and with the mobo on a test mat, I hit the switch and was surprised to see show signs of life. Figured that had been the problem all along, but as I was ready to reinstall the mobo, I noticed the goop all around the processor on the mobo. Pulled the heat sink off; it was EVERYWHERE. So I spent a fair amount of time cleaning up as much as I could. Still didn't get all of it, but after I reinstalled the heat sink, it again POSTed. Back in the case with its original PSU and video card (seated properly this time!), and all the standoffs in place.... fired right up and was ready for an O/S install. Custy wasn't happy with the bill, but the bottom line was he went home with a functional machine with the O/S and latest drivers already installed. Everybody tells me I should have just declared the mobo DOA and sold him another one, but being honest with my customers was important to me. I did have a couple of similar instances of botched build/repair, most of which required new hardware. This particular case rates as my favorite 'it should have been dead but somehow wasn't' experience - at least as far as computers go.

You did this all wrong. Cables should be exposed, they generate heat and having them exposed will allow them to vent. Also you should apply thermal paste to every electrical connector. As far as screwing all the way through the radiator. That was done on purpose to create vent holes. I've been doing this professionally for my entire career, about a whole 2 weeks now. You are just haters and need to bow down to my majesty. When you are finally done, let the computer sit for about 10 minutes to cool..... nevermind that the final step for apple pie. Anyway, I know what I'm doing, I work for the Verge. The VERGE is the beginning of all things Tech. Is the Alpha, and I am the Omega.

The Verge PC turned on only AFTER extensive modifications that were not shown in the video. For example, the cooler fans magically appeared in the final version, the power supply was flipped over, front panel switches were connected, and many cables had been moved. Not sure if The Verge actually learned anything, since they are lying their asses off about the whole affair, claiming all criticism was harassment (and racism) and there were only minor mistakes.

In the verge video they installed the ram in a single channel setup, in your video you installed it correctly but I think you should have explained why it matters. Second the thermal paste. Generally you want to put the motherboard in first, the reason being is that by mounting the motherboard into the case you have a sturdy work surface to work from that is anti-static. No need to wear a Live Strong bracelet like that person from the Verge had to wear. It also helps improve your dexterity since you are now working in a smaller space, meaning it'll be easier to install other components found in tight spaces like PSU and hard drive.

Alot of the ire directed at the Verge was based on them previously attacking tech-youtubers, publicly deriding them as undeserving of the esteemed title of online-journalists while they themselves of course considered such a term perfectly applicable to their esteemed selves. So it´s rather understandable, that many jumped on the occasion to shove that particular point home.

Remember the saying, "Dont thrown stones if you live in a glass house" Well, Verge threw boulders at prominent Tech-tubers who cultivated years of contacts with every major computer parts manufacturer, some even working in the industry on the Hardware & Software side (Linus NCIX; Paul New Egg; Jayz IBM; ect...) so when a Vox subsidiary sees the money that Intel, AMD and Nividia are getting from these people who are making a living by reviewing, testing and reporting PC hardware news. They had to figure out how to torpedo their credibility (as Verge was heavily late to the party, 2 mil views to the combined 10 mil views of some of the biggest Techtubers). The easiest way is to flat out lie to their audience that these guys were hacks and to not trust them. That's messing with someone's pocketbook and you dont do that. So Verge got exactly what was coming to them, getting shit on heavily by techtubers who were shitted on by the Verge in order to deflate their credibility. In essence their house was flatten by a rockslide. Maybe they will learn their lesson but these bullies who have the backing of corporate never do until they can run their competition out of town (and they will do so via SJW hit piece after hit piece).

The only time I replace it is if the AIO is kinda old and the paste has dried up somewhat, which can be the case with bargain official refurb units that have been in storage for a while.

@Grempington 6 жыл бұрын
Even moreso, if you do decide to use "extra" thermal paste, you have to remove the AIO's paste first. You do not know which compounds are in that paste, and you could simply be creating an air bubble between the two pastes. This point should also be proof that the paste on AIO coolers are designed to be decent enough.

That just feels like common sense (different pastes, different thermal properties, etc). But god dammit, whether I put it down in a line or make a little pea sized lump, it doesn't matter. Finally, a wise word about thermal paste. From what I understand, too little is more detrimental than too much (to some extent). Tried the pea size dot numerous times, but it always just circle around the center, not reaching the edges of my cooler's surface, which means unused real estate. I ended up using 2 lines, and using the scrape/applicator to thin spread it across the ihs. Best result for me this way. And the funny thing was, the verge guy got his scrape ready, but didn't use it when the time came.
