It should be Eivar for a man and Eivör for a woman. At least have a an archaic ǫ instead of o in Eivor -> to make it Eivǫr and to not make it so gender ambiguous and feminine-sounding. Or is that maybe some hint of a plot twist? Eivor however strictly would be forever spring in icelandic.

Despite all the historical research and such, they still failed miserably at many things in the game, especially how the vikings look. As a Norwegian who loves viking history, I hope people take the historical parts of this game with a grain of salt. Their outfits, hairstyles, "tattoos" are all wrong. Vikings didn't look like that. Their boats are also wrong and look heavily inspired by the show Vikings. It's like a Hollywood glamor version of vikings, because vikings looked rather plain and didn't have fresh haircuts like that.

I think this game is one of Darby's stinkers. AC Valhalla narrative is of very poor quality compared to other Assassin's Creed games. We’ve played every AC since 2007. These games not only have a story arc but they have both macro and micro “emotional rollercoasters”. A macro being, for example getting revenge on someone you lost at some point. While not the point of the whole story arc, that example can be one milestone in an overall story. Then there are micro rollercoasters, spaced anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes apart. Think of something like a moment of reflection after a moment of adrenaline, or a moment of creative slow paced sightseeing reward after a period of heavy player interaction/input. These are all planned and scripted. In this game the micro rollercoasters are incongruent and immersion breaking to the point of being destructive to the narrative. Eivor is scripted to truly care about the wellbeing of Ceolbert or is scripted to help a friend find a traitor, and in the next scene is scripted to burn down the house, loot and kill the lifestock of a priest who is sitting in a chair, in a sadistic display. Or is scripted to burn down houses of terrified civilians proclaiming his love for the smell of burning homes, or is scripted to slice the throat of a man who stands unthreatening in front of him confessing his faith. Or is scripted to give a beating to a harmless, introverted and reluctant grandfather in front of his grandchildren who are very proud of him. Sadism of quite sickening proportions leaving aside the complete lack of honor or virtue. Even though I am not religious, moments like has players throw up their hands and say “WHAT”? The scripted narrative is so far detached from the automatic emotional response that people simply disconnect with the protagonist they are meant to be imbuing. Again, it’s not that he is evil. There is an audience for sadistic games or games where you play a sociopath and rape and murder. It’s the incongruence. Players WANT to identify with the protagonist (since the beginning of this franchise) but the narrative disconnect through moral incongruence instantly snaps players out of it. The deep and heroic Viking music that starts playing as you complete your "burned homes" count. You stand in a village with burning houses as women and children run away from you screaming. You are meant to feel a rush of adrenaline and powerful at having terrorized these people. The deep voiced Viking music is meant to get your adrenaline pumping. But it doesn't work. It's too transparent. The players initial reaction is: "right, try again... I am not 12." Even a 12 year old child wouldn't go "yeah cool. I am powerful, run from me scared people." In fact the overriding emotion is a push back against the publisher of the game for ascribing the player with such little fortitude, honor or magnificence. For making the scripted emotional response so meek and the 4th wall so transparent. Going deeper, the only “color” given to these displayed acts of sadism in contrast to the deontological modern morality displayed by Eivor in some scenes is that they are predominantly against characters displayed as being religious or believing in god. A priest calmly acknowledging his belief in god is the focus of a humorous joke mission that mocks him or kills him in a funny way, or women running from a burning home shouting “my god, help me” are seen to be “ok” targets to terrorize. But it’s too on the nose, too overt in its adherence to the current real world zeitgeist of (any) religious belief(s) being evil and that people who proclaim a belief are ok to be mocked. Again, I am not a christian, or religious, but the overtness of this agenda, in addition to the incongruence and forced identification with petty sadism is jarring and instantly immersion breaking. Replacing immersion with repulsion. The game has you kill people who are out for vengeance on you. The game has you kill people who WERE YOU in prior AC games. In Valhalla you are the executioner pulling the lever in Piazza Della Signoria and hanging the auditore family infront of Ezio’s eyes. Causing him to shout: “You have not killed all the Auditore, I AM still here“ and start his revenge quest. Playing Valhalla, I’m starting to root for the innocent people I’m killing, and hoping one is strong enough to take Eivor out and kill him and his honorless raiders once and for all. No other AC games (even Rogue and Black Flag) had me (even close to) thinking that. It’s like Darby just thought people wouldn’t notice. It’s the incongruity that is worse of all. Why showcase Eivor to be so heroic and honorable, why not just make him appear as a weasel like Ivarr from the outset so it’s congruent.

It's distracting. They can only keep doing this, because people, even those who are critical, becomes docile when "gaming" news outlets keeps praising the progressive shit, and that in turn encourage Ubisoft to make more woke shit. Even if you don't believe they manage to merge any real history with the game...you shouldn't discount the interest in the history of the period that can be piqued by games. I know a lot of people become interested in real history from exposure to mythology or games. Speaking for myself, I know after playing Ubisoft's "Odyssey" I ordered the book "Anabasis" by Xenophon. During my time playing "Origins" I usually had a page open in my browser which I would use for gathering more context or to explore historic figures, locations, events, and culture which I came across in the game. In past few months leading up to now, I've reread Beowulf, Jackson Crawford's translation of the Poetic Edda, Egil's Saga, and watched countless videos about archaeological discoveries of the past 100 years or so, like Sutton Hoo, and the Gjellestad Viking ship grave which began excavation recently.

Many people have Assassins Creed fatigue. I'll only ever buy another one on special. They are beautiful and the settings are amazing and the combat and stealth were fun, but the trajectory of the story has stagnated. The games should be going further back with the last games being set during the Age of the Isu, but now it's just an excuse to have exotic settings. Also, even for the great games in the series, Ubisoft has never devoted themselves to Historical Authenticity and will instead fuse it with politically correct garbage at the cost of said historical authenticity in favour of their narratives. It could be great, but it won't, Ubisoft are more concerned with mass producing mediocre products frequently, instead of truly amazing games on a less regular basis. @@Regular-Sized Black Flags was the last one I played and from a gameplay aspect it was great, but I wasn’t impressed by the story at all. I still don’t understand why they felt the need to kill Desmond in whichever game that was, it felt super unnecessary and kind of killed the story in my eyes. The only reason I could see for doing it would be so they could more easily justify jumping around to a ton of different historical settings without needing to find a way to tie in to the main story. I think a ton of people would be way more interested in the games if Ubisoft kept going with the same theme of great gameplay in interesting settings, but just dropped the AC name and came up with some unique stories and characters that fit into the setting. That would mean they have to put in a ton more work and lose one of the biggest video game franchises ever though. It would cost a lot now, but I am sure it would pay off in the long run.

Although, I think there was already precedent for the scheme being bigger than Desmond and his lineage. In ACII, when you escape, you go through a maze of different animus machines. Abstergo wouldn’t need that many if they were only interested in Desmond. Of course, they didn’t really do much to flesh that out after BF, which was the annoying part for me. I’ll play along if you wanna kill Desmond and have that be his purpose, but if you bring in the idea that anyone can interact with any DNA, then you’ve gotta do a better job of explaining it and justifying it. Idk. I just want it done at this point. They could’ve used Vikings/Egypt/Greece for a new RPG IP and nobody would’ve cared that it’s similar to OG assassin’s creed. I mean it worked with Watch Dogs.

You don't have to play a game that you don't like. Odyssey is amazing, the work that went into it is nothing short of great. I appreciate the shift to a historic RPG much more than focusing on an Assassin Order that doesn't make any sense.

It's a beautiful game. If you love viking history, you will love the game. However, ubisoft always use their games to push their agenda. I'm tired of female warriors everywhere in the game, dude, WTF?

As someone who love viking history, I hate this game. They sound nice here in this interview/talk, but within the game it's pretty bad. It looks like they just watched Vikings and called it a day.
