How will the war in Ukraine impact future generations? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson learns about disaster relief and helping children on the front lines with co-founder of Ukraine Children’s Action Project and pediatrician, Irwin Redlener.
Find more information and how to help Ukraine Children’s Action Project here: www.eifoundati...
What is the reality of war from a doctor's persepctive? Irwin tells us what it is like to be in a warzone and his experiences working with displaced children. We discuss the current state of humanitarian aid. Is there more we can be doing to help victims of war beyond satisfying immediate needs? What needs to happen to fully recover and build back after this conflict?
What happens to a childs education in a time of war? We learn about Irwin’s efforts to keep Ukrainian kids in school and to continue to think about their future development. What is technology’s role in all this? We explore the playbook for addressing future conflicts and disasters and the importance of asking a kid what they want to be when they grow up.
How do we make sure there isn’t an entire generation lost to trauma? Do we have any insights from past wars? Learn about mental health care for war refugees and how teachers are being trained to handle traumatized children. All that, plus, we discuss the importance of continuing to dream.

It is so painful to see our children suffering because of the war physically and psychologically. My daughter is 8 years old, we live in the west of Ukraine. We are safe, as much as you can be living in Ukraine now. But I see, how war effects even my daughter psychologically. We are trying to live normal as much as we can. Hi there. As a Ukrainian with newborn child, I just can't describe the feelings I have from such kind of support. My daughter waas born on third week after full-scale invasion begins, she's 8 months now and do not speak yet but she knows what sound of an airstrike alert means from 1 month old. She know it's time to hide. That's probably a game for her, but it breaks my heart every time she hear sirens and without any questions or even understanding what is hapening she raises hands for me, to pick her up and take to safe place.

I am from Ukraine. The fact that there are people like Irwin who understand the enormous weight of the psychological and physical trauma our people, and especially kids, go through, and do their best to have this gap addressed - it's indeed touching. Thank you, Irwin. Your accent on using the technology I find very correct. Ukraine is quite a technologically advanced state, and with the use of the technology a lot of things in psychology and education can be addressed fast and with high effectiveness. But we need all help that is out there to do that, as there are so many topics to address as a result of these atrocities russia commits with our people, and every person, organization that helps to organize, manage, direct - is of a value of a gold. Yet, and I would like to address Irwin: you have said that as a pediatrician you would choose to do whatever it takes to stop the war NOW, so that the atrocities end. I want to bring to your attention one thing we, Ukrainians, understand. It's not about revenge or pain and hate. It's rational: any peace negotiation with russia will not bring end to the atrocities. On the contrary. To negotiate NOW is to stop missiles flying maybe for some period of time. But the territories that will remain under occupation will see ethnic cleansing, genocide, tortures, brainwashing of Ukrainians, and children will witness that. "Peace" will be used by russia which is already losing on the battlefield, to regroup, resupply and in a period of time - to do all this not to the part, but to the whole Ukraine. On the contrary, russia is losing now, and its missiles, if we do not concede, will stop flying sooner or later, and we will keep our chance to give our children back their normal lives after the beast is destroyed and has no power in any foreseeable future to bring up its head again.

It took 10 years of war for the Afghans to convince the Soviets to leave. 20 more to convince the US to do the same. For Vietnam it was 15 years and for Iraq, 8. If Ukraine has not been completely ruined by this war yet, it will be by the time it's over. If your people fight very hard and very well, parts of Russia might also be ruined. Therefore, there is no need to teach Ukrainians to freeze the war for a while (read about the Minsk-1 and Minsk-2 agreements with Russia). You have no idea what is happening now in the territories of Ukraine occupied by the russians (read what happened in Kherson, Izyum, Bucha), so your advice is advice to throw people into the hands of murderers, that's all.

This is something that's bugged me for a long time. I spent 3 years in Iraq between 2004 and 2017. I know a lot of my fellow Soldiers who suffer from PTS and other disabilities. I've often wondered about the extent of the mental illness and suffering among the Iraqi population. It's really sad and I'm not sure if there's anything to do about it.

I've lived with undiagnosed PTSD for most of my adult life, diagnosed in '16. I recommend 2 books on it. CPTSD: From Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker. He's a Trauma Specialist from No. California with lived experience. Go to the Table of contents, find what's bugging and read that chapter. It's packed with great info that helps with the daily issues like Flash backs and disassociation. The Body Keeps Score by Bessel Von Der Kolk, MD. He's the leading Mental Health Therapist on PTSD and THIS is the book to read if you want to know the what's & Why's of the disorder.

My family has been poor, disabled and homeless for ten years. We work hard and teach ourselves. Our son, now 13, is an honor student, 100% in every class, student council member, in the national junior honors society, and just a normal kid... But because in spite of all of our challenges and trauma we are privileged. We work, we afford food, we always find shelter wether it's a tent or cabin or basement or camper, we have access to technology. We'll eventually be able to afford a house and be fine but this kid will be great at whatever he chooses to do. You should probably give him a scholarship and sponsorship to get him into MIT, he excels in microbiology, physics and sociology

I work with troubled youth in America. Knowing the trauma that the kids I work with had and how it created developmental issues in their lives…I am overwhelmingly sickened with trying to imagine what developmental issues have been created for the kids in Ukraine. Some advice would be to try creating as stable daily routines as possible! I understand that it might be beyond most folks control, but having as stable of routines helps. Give extra chores and keep them busy.

Thank you for your help. It's much appreciated. Now about education in Ukraine. I don't have statistics on the whole country, but as for my little town - which has two schools - one covers grade 1-9, the other one 1-11. The latter one was under renovation for almost a whole teaching year 2017-2018. Kids were having online classes. It was both theirs and their teachers' first experience, I believe. Later, in less than 2 years a number of lockdowns struck schools in Ukraine. During 2021 schools all over Ukraine(including my school) were getting regular anonymous calls from Russia or Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia with threats of mining. As for 2022, I'm sure you need no additional data. It's horrible that our kids have lost years of proper education.

Thank you! Thank you so much! We here in Ukraine are fighting for our freedom, and your help especially with children and their dreams is just unmeasurable! It is totally understandable that you want to end this war by any means, including giving up some of our territory, but what you dont understand, that if we give up something now, this war will fire up in 3-5 years, we see that empirical data in front if us right now! So we do not need a pause in the war, we need to end it once and for all! Слава Україні! 🇺🇦
