Coach Nick broke down how Kevin Durant got his shot in the key first half of Game 7 when the Thunder took on the Warriors. While he made 4 of 5 attempts, it was strange that he didn't get more shots.

"Alligator Arms" means when an NFL receiver is scared to extend arms fully, or NBA guy (in this case Roberson) doesn't extend arms fully on the shot, or when the check comes at a restaurant, and you make a half-hearted attempt to reach for the check.

Here's why the Warriors won this series. There's just far too many possessions where Durant is just out there holding his shorts. No movement whatsoever. Unlike the Warriors, when the first option is denied, Curry and Klay just wont stop moving. One example would be when Curry drives to the basket, kicks it off to Klay, then immediately runs towards the corner for a pass. Then if its denied, they run a hand-off or a pick and it's just so hard to stop unlike this garbage OKC offense.
@SSEF15
@SSEF15 8 жыл бұрын
That's what years of being in an iso offense would do to you. We saw it with the Bulls, where earlier in the season we saw some great ball movement and later on it was just an absolute pitiful excuse of an offense where all the players collectively told Hoiberg and his principles to f*ck off and run those shitty ass plays they've been running since 2010. Anyway, it also doesn't help that Westbrook's 4th Q bball IQ is lower than a peanut's. Just a terrible loss for them.

I thought KD was very efficient on that 1st half. they were moving the ball and actually involving their teammates on offense. It's the 2nd half where Westbrook went out of control hogging the ball and chuking ridiculous 3s like he can compete with Steph and Klay that lost them the series

@oswaldocontreras1507
@oswaldocontreras1507 8 жыл бұрын
There were plenty of explanations of what the Warriors did, what do you mean? Coach Nick blatantly dissected how the Warriors either switched on pin down screens or the on-ball defender shaded towards the side KD came off said picks and that forced RW to go somewhere else with the ball. Durant was also forced to kick out to the wrong shooter when he drove the lane because of the way the Warriors decided to leave Roberson open... Yes, OKC did a great job of NOT doing what they should have done but I think the title of the video is fair.

Wow. it's like you're the ONLY ONE who gets this coach. When KD shoots a lot, people say he's doing too much. When he's efficient, but doesn't put up a bunch of shots, people say "he needs to step up", when really it's not his fault People love to just say "KD and Russ don't know what they're doing" but in reality the issue is that *the Thunder are horrible at executing half court offence*. They don't set effective screens (except Adams), they execute plays lazily, positioning is often horrible for both spacing and passes, and guys don't know the play half the time. Especially Dion and Kanter for that last one (as gifted as they are offensively). The fundamentals aren't there, and when the fundamentals aren't there, everything else comes crashing down
@SJ-di5zu
@SJ-di5zu 8 жыл бұрын
It actually is kinda KD's fault though. He's got the hottest hand, is the best shooter on the team, and the player the Warriors pay most attention to and he's standing in the corner letting his defender just stand next to him while his teammates are running a play
@ThatsPety
@ThatsPety 8 жыл бұрын
Sachin Johri I definitely see what you're saying, but when the play calls for you to just stand in the corner, you have to just stand in the corner. If you dont, you're gonna mess up the spacing, and ruin the whole play. So that's on whoever calls those plays (whether it's Russ or Billy)

It's like, what else do you want Westbrook to do? If KD is standing around and obviously saving his energy, Ibaka wants no parts of the ball and Roberson can't even make a layup then where do they go for offense? Russ has to created at least 15 to 20 looks per game for his teammates, if the only other scorer on the team is going to stand around tugging his shorts than somebody has to shoot it.

You cant win a 7 games series with Roberson on the floor. As good as a defender that he is, he wasn't able to stop the warriors big scorers (In 4 of the 7 games). And in the offensive end, The fact the he is on the floor creates a situation where KD and Westbrook see 2 defenders EVERY TIME they make a move to the basket. Its hard enough when you go at a defender like Iguadela on his own, and then when you see another player next to him its just so hard to score. Whenever you do pass him the ball, he shoots in a very low percentage. It worked pretty well for 3 games, but again - its a 7 games series...... The teams that made it to the finals are those that packed their lineup with shooters and 1 big guy that stands next to the basket waiting for the offensive rebound.

I'm curious to see how the Finals plays out. I was confident before but seeing how the Warriors just collapsed and filled the paint daring the rest to shoot 3's, that won't work vs the Cavs. But if there's one thing I know, it's that the Warriors are the best in the league at making adjustments. They won 3 straight vs Memphis, Cavs last year and the Thunder this year. Unless Cleveland go 3-0 up, I think the Warriors will end up winning the series
@cacaw_0
@cacaw_0 8 жыл бұрын
The Cavs are a real 3pt threat. However, they are not as tall as the Thunder, so the defensive rebounding will be cleaner for the warriors i expect. I have full faith in the Warriors to win the series and i expect the cavs to give a good fight. It will be spectacular!
@mygaffer
@mygaffer 8 жыл бұрын
LeBron isn't as fast as Westbrook. LeBron only goes to the rim in transition, otherwise he prefers back to the basket. Easy for Warriors to threaten double and still recover to the perimeter. Still the major problem for the Cavs will be stopping the Warriors offense. They just don't have the defense to do it.

@CoachNick Is Russell Westbrook really the main problem here? From your analysis, it sounds like the thunder in general dont run a lot of good plays, which in turn forces a lot of bad, Westbrook isolations. I have seen some really good decision making and play making ability from Westbrook throughout the season, which is why I am willing to defend him. Could this be more attributed to poor execution/coaching/running good sets for Durant? Or is this an individual player's issue? Obviously you also mentioned how Warriors commited Robertson's man to shadow Durant, but because of the thunder's lack of movement and poor spacing in general, they havent been able to exploit the double/triple team on Durant effectively by finding the open man. I feel like this is more OKC's lack of discipline, and poorly executed sets.

I thought they should have kept Waiters in the game because he can space, handle the ball, and play good defense like has all playoffs long. Waiters was a +7 and Robertson was a -19.

Coach, it looks like a lot of these defensive settings won't work against the Cavs. Their 3 point shooting is just way better than the Thunders'. GSW can't afford helping off Love, Frye, Jr etc etc. Even RJ and Shump are shooting around 45%. And unlike KD, LeBron probably will post a lot, he also will make much better decisions than Westbrook. What's your take on this?

WB and Durants' attitudes should've been flipped. Durant got hot in the first half, and should've been asking for the ball and getting the team energized during a gm 7 on the road, instead of being passive. WB always plays aggressive, that's his style, but he should've been looking for the pass instead of taking the game into his own hands.

People have to stop making excuses for KD. If he wanted the ball he would've DEMANDED the ball! The Warriors didn't do anything special to deny the ball to KD, he just flat out took himself out on some plays.

Because the plays don't call for his number. It's not hard to see that. Whenever OKC ran a play the person who was supposed to shoot almost always shoots.

So basically Billy Donovan is Scott Brooks 2.0. Same stand around and watch either KD or Russ dribble aimlessly for 10 seconds then jack up a tough contested shot offense. You can beat SA playing that way given that SA isn't a juggernaut offensively but you're not beating GS playing that way. CLE will lose in a much quicker fashion if they employ the same strategy.
@mugwump6400
@mugwump6400 8 жыл бұрын
But is this really on Billy Donovan? The OKC offence looked very different in games 3 and 4: no standing around, no (ok, less...) ill-advised shots from Westbrook, everybody chipping in on offense. I doubt that they would have come this far without Billy Donovan. It was only under the pressure of games 6&7, when they were close to sealing the deal that they succumbed to the pressure and their muscle-memory kicked back in. It takes a while to get rid of bad habits for good, but I 'd give Billy Donovan some credit for at least trying to change them.

1. You're a Warriors bandwagon(one of the worst I've ever seen). 2. Don't delete this comment again like you did last time. 3. I unsubbed once you made the curry guarding Westbrook video because it's information was false and if it was accurate why didn't he guard Westbrook all series. 4. What is your team? Which team do you REALLY root for? Why do you hate on Westbrook and nut-hug curry so much? 5. #CAVS2016CHAMPS #ALLin216

OKC is far less than the sum of its parts, and that's the 1's responsibility. OKC needs a true 1 to break through their ceiling. RW is an abysmal 1 and an elite 2. The things RW does well can't be coached/learned. The things he's terrible at, can. I think this is why a coach would have so much to say about RW. Because if RW made better decisions the guy would be a champion.

The Cavs' best player lives off of layups, dunks, shots close to the hoop, transition points and a free throw here and there. Those points will contract in the finals since teams can get away with more physical defense. LeBron cannot consistently shoot consistently outside of the paint and the law of averages will bring his percentage down as he had been shooting well these playoffs. Love and Irving are both great shooters, but they cannot pressure an offense so their contribution on one end of the floor will be balanced out by a negative net defense rating. JR Smith is a great shooter, but he's super streaky and cannot be relied on for manufacturing points. The Cavs have played really well, but some of that can be attributed to the weak af Eastern Conference and they haven't been tested yet in the same way GSW has been. I don't think GSW will choke up if they have the Cavs on the ropes like OKC did to them. Right now I believe GSW can be down 3-0 and still come back in seven, there's just no betting against them after that shit they pulled against OKC, which beat the Spurs! Prediction: GSW in 6. Disclaimer: Not a Warriors fan.

You couldnt be more wrong, Lebron is a pass first type of player who has terrofoc shot selection when he does decide to shoot. The way he impacts the game allows a inferior cavalaires team to triumph over a juggernaught warriors team. Lebron isnt just a guy who drives and throws up bad shots, he moves to the flow of the game, if one method is ineffective he will find other ways to hurt you whether that be through his agressive offense or his magic johnson like ability to distribute the ball or use his gravity that draws a double team and kick to the open man. Make no mistake, the warriors are a better team than the cavalaires but Lebron has the ability to just make all of that not matter since he does everything at an elite level. Kyrie is also an offensive superstar who sink contested shots with no problem, something the warriors didnt have to worry about with westbrook.

okc is straight better than CLE. they have 2 of the top 5 players, a wayy better front court offensively, defensively, rebounding wise, they can switch unlike cleveland with length at every position. waiters was shooting 43% from 3, ibaka was hitting 45% from 3 in the playoffs and roberson was hitting 44% from 3 in the series yet gsw overcame what was their worst matchup down 3-1, raising their confidence to 90000000! remember the 14 spurs were down 2-1 to the 8th seed mavs (wrecked on their home court in game 2)? they went on to wreck the heat by a record margin. (those same heat waltzed through the eastern conference) The 95 rockets were down 3-1 to barkley and went on to upset & sweep the magic despite not having homecourt

What lost this game for the thunder was russ' shot selection/decision making and secondarily the thunder missing open/easy shots (Ibaka, roberson, etc.) The warriors did an okay job of denying KD, but he made the right pass most if the time but the others just couldn't convert.
@cptfwiffo

I think you're underestimating the game plan of GW. They know that if they push KD a certain way, He'll pass it to the wing. Sadly, OKC ran sets that put Ibaka on the strong-side wing, not the weakside. (and instead have robertson be there). That means that when KD drives and is repelled, he passes to a wide-open Robertson, instead of a wide-open Ibaka. Ibaka shoots 10% points better then Robertson, i.e. the difference between lethal and below average. On 5 kickouts by KD, that's roughly half a threepointer, or 2 points. It doesn't sound like much, but small things like these, playing the percentages, is what you do at that level. You know they're going to score. You just want to make sure that the good players have to make the hard shots, and the bad players have to make the easier shots. Have four of these small adjustments, and all of a sudden you score 8 points more... and you win game 5, 6 and 7 (they were all close, i.e. within 6 points in the final 2 minutes)

Pause at 5:31 and tell me again that it's only the vicious Draymond Green who kicks people in the lower region...look at how Russell tries to sell a foul here! Damn watching this reminds me that the Thunder could have been up like 25 points. Roberson missed so many put backs, Ibaka would have definitely knocked down a few threes if given those chances, Westbrook doing his thing ;), and Durant not getting enough opportunities.
