Pretty sure there was a thing back then called Yahoo. I was on a college campus and someone ran from the computer lab with a printout with something about a new console out now. My friend drove me to the bank where I cashed out a bond of some kind I'd won at a HS event and we went to Toys R Us. The guy didn't even realize they had them but they did and I got one on launch day. The next few months were spent showing 3D graphics to the other people in my dorm and hunting/waiting for new games.

Yeah my Dad (who was a big gamer at the time) brought home a Saturn one day out of the blue in 1995...as a kid, I had no idea it was even out...like you I knew it was coming at some point, but he just brings it home and......I didn't even care. I was still so into the Genesis at the time (we did have Sega CD as well), that the Saturn literally didn't interest me at all. My Dad barely played the thing too and he eventually got rid of it. The same thing happened with an Atari Jaguar...we had it for like 2 weeks and barely touched it. I honestly remember nothing about mt short lived experience with the Saturn at this point.

Sega doesn't have the money to make another console. Sony and Microsoft have probably spent billions on R&D and marketing for the PS5 and Series X and Sega just can't compete with that. These new consoles from smaller companies (Atari and Intellivision) won't sell well and will get buried by the big three.

I remember going to my best friends house back in 95 and being AMAZED at seeing Virtua Fighter being played on his brand new Sega Saturn. The problem was I had no idea Sega was even releasing a new console at the time. Besides that one moment, I remember not caring about it at all until around 96 when my dad bought me a Saturn for Christmas. I absolutely ADORED my Sega Genesis prior to owning a Saturn and was (and still am) big into gaming. How Sega came out with a console without me, and many others, being aware of it at the time is beyond me. Could you imagine if Nintendo were to release a New switch without no one knowing about it? My dad and I went to Toys R Us one day at the beginning of Summer in 1995, and both of us were completely floored by seeing the Saturn in there. We both thought it was just the new Display unit, and that the Tickets that Toys R Us used for the Customers to buy games led us to believe that this might just be a Pre Order ticket. We had Pre Ordered a couple of games before, so if we got to the counter and thats what it was, then forget it. We knew the system was coming out in the Fall, so this just had to be a Pre Order slip. Well, we walked out of the store with a Saturn that day, and as a kid, I was in shock! My dad and I were both big time gamers, and still are to this day (I'm 37, and hes 70), so the whole experience felt really cool. I felt kind of guilty, because a couple of weeks after that I was leaving to spend the Summer with my mom, in a different state, and would be taking that Saturn with me! To this day, the Saturn has been looked at fondly by our family. My dad finally inherited the system from me, about a year later after I had a Playstation, and he bought every Light Fun, and game imaginable for the Saturn. We have them all in the gaming closet to this day, ready to be hooked up to this old 36" Sony Wega CRT in my dads house, that will never be moved again!
@randomcharacter65013 жыл бұрын
One thing that doesn't get mentioned when talking about their failures is that Sega was too reactionary. The Master System was made in reaction to NES, when that failed to take off they slapped together the Genesis to compete with the NES. People forget those Nintendon't commercials were aimed at the NES not The SNES which wasn't out yet. That was the whole purpose of the Sega CD and 32x, to give the Genesis capabilities SNES had right of the box with sprite scaling, orchestral sound, and with modded carts the ability to render simple polygons. The Saturn was supposed to one up the SNES and be a better sprite based console. Because they reacted to the short comings of the Genesis they didn't see the shift to polygons. Although the Saturn was capable of 3d it wasn't as good as Sony's machine. Which brings us to the Dreamcast. Yet another underpowered machine meant to compete with the previous gen. Of course it was going to be better than PSX coming out 5 years after the thing but wasn't ready for PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube. Sega was never as good at hardware as we'd like to believe
@jamiegreig96993 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to see someone else finally saying this. I actually didn't know those Nintendon't commercials came out before the SNES. But I've seen many of the knee jerk reactions that came out afterward. The 32x was a direct reply to the super fx chip, as you mentioned. Also, the complications that came with the programming in the Saturn were a result of Sega adding an extra processor to keep up with the Playstation's capabilities. Sega was an amazing developer. But when it came to hardware they were basically kids seeing what was out there and saying "We need this for our games!!". They recognized good hardware after it was on the market, but not before. I wish when they finally become a third party developer they would have continued making the great games they were always known for. Alas, those seem to have gone by the waist side as well.
@randomcharacter65013 жыл бұрын
@@jamiegreig9699 I gotta add their arcade division was top notch. I don't understand why they didn't try to apply what they learned building arcade cabinets to their consoles. Not saying they needed to go the NeoGeo route but at least make sure your 16 bit console can do the super scaler stuff from the arcades.

I had the option to get a game console one year (pretty sure it was 1996). My first choice was the Saturn because I was really into Virtua Fighter, but my parents bought me a SNES instead. It mostly had to do with price because we were poor and Best Buy was selling the SNES was like $99 because the N64 has either launched or was about to launch. But if I remember correctly my parents were also told the Saturn wasn’t a good choice because it wasn’t doing that well. My parents didn’t want to get an expensive console with a limited library that would fizzle out in a year-which is exactly what happened. Even though the SNES was essentially obsolete when I got it, I could still get games for it and our video store had games to rent for it (they did it have Saturn games). Plus it’s THE reason I got into Zelda and got a Triforce tattoo that plays into the story of how I met my husband. So not getting a Saturn kind of worked out in the end.

The worst part (for me, at least) of SEGA completely dropping the ball on the Saturn's release was that the Dreamcast kind of had to pick up the slack. I mean, they did botch the Dreamcast release too by releasing it only months before the PS2, but the Saturn could be seen as a big nail in the coffin of SEGA console releases. It also seems ironic that Sony now has the publishing rights to most of SEGA's games now.

We were the district managers "home" store so we were often the test bed for new products(I have a ton of stories about being the first Babbages to sell anime, toys and for a while even comic books) so we were getting the console before anyone else. My boss even called me in sick from school that day, saying he was my dad, so I could be their to get everything set up. On top of the overtime for the work that night and the extra hours the next day, at the end of my shift my boss and the district manager gave me my own Sega Saturn. It was pretty cool.

Even if it didn’t manage to compete with the PlayStation 1 or 2, I love my Saturn and Dreamcast. There’s still a lot of great (expensive) games on both systems that I’m fortunate enough to own. Saturn games like Nights Into Dreams, Panzer Dragoon, Shining Force III and X-Men Children of the Atom. And Dreamcast games like Sonic Adventures, Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and so much more. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and play some of my Sega games.

Gosh, I cannot believe that was TWENTY FIVE YEARS ago. Yes, I asked my parents for it and got it the day it launched. I do not remember how I knew about it but I was there the day it launched on "Saturnday" June 10th, 1995. It was available at Electronics Boutique and Software Etc. as well (funny both stores are now Gamestop). That was the BEST childhood summer ever. I remember playing Virtual Fighter, Daytona USA, and Panzer Dragoon. They were pretty much the only games my friends and I played over and over AND OVER again all summer long. When we were not playing Saturn we were going to the cinema to see "Clueless". Watching Michael AND Janet Jackson perform in the "Scream" music video, trying to memorize and recite every single line Left Eye spat out in the rap break for TLC's " Waterfalls" and rocking out to Alanis' first hit "You Otta Know", Yup best childhood summer ever and all of it Orbited around Saturn. :)

I have 2 Saturns. Got my first in 1996 and bought another about 10 years later on eBay. I had about 40 games for it, over the years they disappeared, which was heartbreaking when I finally set up my game room and realized that around 100 disc based games were missing.

I was at Disney World on summer vacation during this time. SEGA had a huge gaming exhibit at Epcot with tons of Genesis and 32X games to play. In the corner they had a demo set up on a counter with a Saturn running were you could play Panzer Dragoon. I was hooked! I told the attendant I couldn't wait until the fall to get a Saturn, and he replied "it's out now at Toys R Us." I was very confused/surprised. When we got home from vacation I had my parents take me to Toys R Us right away to get one. I loved the SEGA arcade games of that era. I had no regrets not having a Playstation.

The Sega Saturn was my first console ever and I had a blast with it. Without the Sega Saturn, I wouldn't be a gamer today. I played mostly Panzer Dragoon II, Nights into Dreams, Sonic 3D Blast, or Space Jam. They all were great games especially Sonic and my all-time favorite Space Jam, where you play basketball, but every 2min you played a mini-game kinda like Mario Party today. I also remember that I had a disc with like 12 games on it where you could try out lengthy demos of different games.

I got one at Christmas '96 when they teamed up with MTV and sold the console with 3 additional games (Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop 2 and Daytona USA). I enjoyed the console and ended up with around 2 dozen games, after buying a set off eBay in the early 2000's.

I got a Sega Saturn for Christmas when it first came out. Loved it, but didn't have any games for the first couple of days, so we just fooled around with the CD player screen (it was also my family's first CD player). My brother gave ours away years ago, but I just recently got another one off of Craigslist for only 20 bucks! Unfortunately, Saturn games are super expensive now :( I only have 4: Dark Saviour, Sim City, Cyber Speedway, and Solar Eclipse.

I still have my Sega Saturn. Guardian Heroes, Myst, D, Panzer Dragon, Lunacy, Daytona USA, Cyberia... I still have all those games and I still love them. It is the console I have the best memories of.

I had a Saturn as a kid. Didn't regret it at all. It was the system that introduced me to imports because I had to have Xmen vs. Street Fighter. Eventually got a Playstation in the summer of 98 because the RE2 port to the Saturn got cancelled. That was a damn good summer.

The saturn is a key example of how to not do a console; launch too early (not enough systems), launch too early (not enough games), be hard to program for, have no killer game (anything good sonic), have crappy marketing. The PS3 went through some of this too, but straitened it self out in the end.

I went to a FuncoLand with my dad in 1995, the Playstation had just come out and I was really excited for the Saturn. I remember vividly, the guy working there said to my us "the Saturn will fail, you want the Sony" I was playing the Saturn kiosk and had my mind set... We left with the playstation, Crash Bandicoot, Jumping Flash and Twisted Metal, I forever thank you FuncoLand guy it was just cars killing cars!!!

My oldest brother bought it. Although I don’t remember that event exactly, I do remember playing many games on the Saturn for many hours - good times. It became my mainstream console for a while until we got a PS1. Although I had had consoles up until then, I was too young to really appreciate and understand what was going on in those games. So my memory of consoles before the Saturn isn’t as vivid - but the Saturn - I definitely remember that. Dragon Ball Z: Legends FTW!

I had a Saturn. I got it like a year after launch for my 16th birthday. I loved that damn thing. Was my favorite console. NIGHTS was my jam back then I still have the boxed copy with the controller around here somewhere, buried in a box in my basement. Probably right next to my other old school consoles.

I think my friend may have gotten the Sega Saturn around launch. Even though I was a Sega Genesis owner and fan, I wasn't aware that it had launched. He may have gotten it later though. It's hard to remember as he is literally the only person that I knew who had a Sega Saturn. There were some pretty cool games related to Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengeance. He also played this game that I've been trying to recall... "Three Dirty Dwarves" It was 'Three' something something and they were either Dwarves or well I don't think Elves, but some sort of fantasy thing. I don't think it was a fantasy game or at least I remember one them wielding a shotgun
