I'm from northern California and I feel reall lucky to have grown up with these trees. I leanred about upwelling when I was taking marine biology but I didn't know it had that much effect on fog and terrestrial ecosystems as a result. No matter how much I learn about how interconnected everything is, I continue to be astounded by it.

there is something primordially uncanny for me in trees that grow this abnormally large. they are astonishing, and yet absolutely terrifying for reason i cannot put to words.

The answer is moisture. Did you know the tallest ones grew 4 years worth of height gain in single driest years that had less fog and rain? So fog is one way to get water. So happens, the tallest hemlock and maple known are in those parks also, and also grew extra height during the drought years, although I don't know if those two species grew 4 years worth in a single year.

Awesome production effort in this video. I like how you break down the process of water movement through the ecosystem. It’s amazing how much energy is moved around the planet through evapotranspiration, one of the many things that are fun to ponder! It’s also cool to think about how much of the world works through equalizing a gradient, whether it’s heat transfer through a thermal gradient, wind from a pressure gradient, water movement through a hydraulic gradient, etc. It’s a simple process at its core, but it drives such an intricate matrix of outcomes and interactions: climate, cellular processes, or just water moving through the planet. It’s a long comment, but I thoroughly enjoyed the effort and wonder you put into this. From a hydrologist to a biologist, I’m inspired man.
@TheBackpackingBiologist2 жыл бұрын
I love the way you put it. One of my favorite concepts is diffusion and how it pretty much drives all natural phenomenon! Super cool stuff, I wanna do a video on it in the future :)

@@TheBackpackingBiologist I’ll watch it when you do! I occasionally talk about hydrology and geology of my area in my videos, but you really go the extra mile and make it the center point of the video instead of just a little mentioned blurb. @TheBackpackingBiologist3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mario! To my knowledge, the process of upwelling is not affected by water collection. Upwelling is a gigantic meteorological event that is driven by wind, temperature and even the rotation of the Earth, so I don't think trees have any effect of it. Could be wrong though, I'll let you know!
