They called themselves Roman, and even their enemies called them Romans. It's unfair that HRE which was an empire that pretty much everybody agree were Germans LARPing as Romans gets to keep the 'Roman' in their name whilst the actual empire that has an unbroken continuity from Augustus, who even their harshest foes called them Romans is referred to as 'Byzantine'. Throughout its long history, they only ever referred to themselves 'Byzantines' a couple of times, and it's strictly referring to the people of Constantinople. It's like calling New Yorkers today 'New Amsterdamers'. New York was New Amsterdam before, but as it stands today, everybody in the world wouldn't call it New Amsterdam.

The City of Ulm is still a great place to live i guess ... although I`m German, its rather far away from where I live and there is nothing particularly special about it so I never visited, but I read from statistical data that there are doing fine over there ... :) They have a pretty nice coat of arms that is just black and white and nothing outstanding :)
