@@tomkirstein2680the ioc doesn’t think the iwf is doing a good enough job with anti-doping so they are progressively removing weight classes as a sort of punishment. the chinese lifter(s) you are thinking about are li dayin, liu huanhua, and tian tao. li dayin was previously an 81 and tian a 96 when they were the olympic categories. liu was in the (at the time) non-olympic 89 category. when the 81s and 96s and 109s were dropped for the 89s and 102s they all had to move around. li dayin just barely didn’t qualify for tokyo and tian was a known superstar so they were favored to move up/down to 89. liu was still just a rising star so he got moved out of the 89s and up to the 102s (which was a great move in hindsight as he is the overwhelming favorite meanwhile li and tian were both not chosen).

Reminds me of the mid 1990's when the USA had the top 12 400 m runners in the world, they could only send 3 to the Olympics and won the gold , silver and bronze .The guy who came in 4th can say he came 4th in an Olympic final , but in reality he knew he wasn't even in the top 10 globally.
@AfferbeckBeats5 ай бұрын
You gotta be in it to win it, and you can't make up hypotheticals like that. Especially for weightlifting, where even if the world record holder is there, they can still miss three snatches and leave it open to anyone. For weightlifting, many weight categories could have all medals won by China, especially women. But the sport doesn't work like that, and if it did, it would collapse due to lack of participation because why would anyone else bother trying to develop a team when they could focus on a less dominated sport?
@zbigniewczaykowski5145 ай бұрын
@@AfferbeckBeats That’s not hypothetical, it actually happened, might not have been top 12 though , maybe top 8 or 9 . You’re correct however, it wouldn’t work in weightlifting which is still unfortunately considered by most to be a minority fringe sport with not many world class participants. The Americans are more interested in powerlifting which isn’t in the Olympics.

Yes.
@AfferbeckBeats5 ай бұрын
There are ten weight categories each for men and women in weightlifting, but due to corruption by the governing body the IWF, the IOC has limited weightlifting participation for the Olympics, so only five weight categories each will be contested. This has really messed up the sport the past two Olympic cycles, with athletes desperately trying to gain or lose weight to be in an Olympic category, and perform well enough to qualify. Leaving the non Olympic categories a ghost town.
