Imagine having 79 fruit trees on a 4,400 sq ft lot! Growing food in the city (and in a small space) is easier than you might imagine. Join us in this Florida vegetable garden mini series as we go on an urban homestead tour of a south Florida food forest that borders central Florida. See what they have done on their 1/10 of an acre lot to become self sufficient in just 5 years time. And get some urban homesteading ideas and tips for beginners who don't know the first thing about food forests (that's what they were just 5 years ago).

I wish I were younger. I would absolutely have this. But I do have a small start thanks to this channel. Elise is wonderful. She got me started and inspired to get back to gardening. SItting here right now cleaning my Malabar, New Zeland and perpetual spinach I just harvested along with mint and basal.

Sounds like your doing amazing! Everyone's space is going to function differently based on their own personal situation. If your growing a bit of food that's all that matters!

Great job. Our lot isn’t much bigger at .13 and it is packed full with fruit trees,veggies and a butterfly garden…Foodscaping/mini food forest…. We live in central Florida..We would love to have about 1-2 acres BUT there is something so cool about taking a tiny postage stamp yard and turning it into an edible landscape…My motto is “Plant with a Purpose”🦋

Would love to know some tips/advice/cost on well installation. I live in central Florida also and been wanting wells for my garden for years. Always thought they were too pricey but maybe not as bad as I thought? Thank you for sharing!

Most interesting! Enjoying your new UTube endeavor Elise. I followed you in the past and thoroughly enjoyed your channel; very informative. I'm finally moving to FL this Fall YAY!!! Been waiting 3 yrs on bldg approval My home is being built in Inlet Beach on the Panhandle. Is that known as North FL? The property is red clay covered with white sand. I think it's zone 9. I've been an avid gardener all my life in LA, hopeful to continue self-sufficiency gardening for my family. Could you please provide some info here on amending the soil for productive gardening? Tks for all you do for us :):):)

I'm still going to be putting out plenty of veggie 101 videos too! Congrats on the house, yes you will be firmly in North Florida. Here's a video on amendments. With the clay be careful with any tilling as it can actually make things worse. Add lots of organic (soil matter) amendments if growing in ground or potentially raised beds. Have fun building your new garden out! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZy1nneej756h6c

I have a question. I'd like to plant a lot of trees in the backyard (except for in the area where our beautiful oak trees died and the trunks are still in the ground). Still, I'd like to plant around it. How do you plant that many trees and not have the roots fighting for space between trees?
@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest Жыл бұрын
Making sure the soil is up to par with proper nutrition can make a big difference. Also picking smaller statured or dwarf varieties. They also do a lot more maintenance than would otherwise be needed if the trees were allowed to get full grown because they are packing everything in. More diversity but more effort. Just depends if the trade off is worth it for you.

What fertilizer are you using for your Mustache? High desert permaculture has been a challenge and blast ! Wood chips solve a lot of problems . Just be mindful to check for termites 🤙🏻

How do you do container trees? , I've got clay soil, and most trees do not thrive here. Love a video on this.
@TheUrbanHarvest
@TheUrbanHarvest Жыл бұрын
@@sewpretty13 There are dwarf varieties of some trees that do just fine in large pots. Typically produce a little less but at least your growing some! You can slowly amend your soil over time to improve drainage... Lots and lots of organic mater : )
