lieutenant is still a junior officer of the RN , but in war time they can command a ship. though a sloop or smaller. then they can be promoted to master and commander, which can command a frigate rating ship, at this time they can be called captain, but technically they are not. once they got promoted again, they are at rank captain, they can command a frigate or higher, i cannot be sure he can command a ship of the line or not. once he reached post captain, he can command from 4th rate to higher ship of the line. then of course the war time command of a commodore, which can command a small detachment of ships, at this time the commodore is an admiral, even wearing an admiral uniform, but once the task is over, he is back to post captain's half pay, instead of the full admiral pay. so in this claim 'he's not a captain' is totally false, since both master and commander and post captain are captain rank.

So with Captain Crunch, he may have had the RANK of Commander, but he is still the Captain (top commanding officer) of the SS Guppy. It's the same with Captain Cook.

Just like everybody who fails to understand that at sea the commander of any naval ship is referred to his/her face as "Captain" and to other people as "the Captain" (of the ship) regardless of rank actually held. Many mapmakers draw fake islands to tell if other mapmakers are copying off their work. Sandy Island was never spotted, but was used as a sort of a signature for the mapmaker.

Actually a post-captain just means a captain who is in charge of a ship, since not all captains were able to get a ship (they'd basically be kept a-shore on half pay) those who were able to get command of a ship were given the rank post-captain as their names were "posted" in the London gazette, they'd still be called captain and have command of a ship.

"James Cook never held the rank of captain, but did hold the ranks of lieutenant, commander and post-captain. Since he was in charge of a ship, people called him Captain, even though he wasn't technically a captain." What the hell does all that mean? First, the RANK of post-captain IS the rank of captain; it's just the older name. In Cook's time, post-captains commanded post-ships which were any significant warship from frigate and larger. If for any reason they were assigned to command a smaller vessel, that ship automatically became a post ship despite its size. Second, the APPOINTMENT of captain is the older term for the commanding officer of a ship. In both instances, rank or appointment, the holder IS technically a captain and would be addressed as such. Incidentally, the rank of Commander was not called that in Cook's time - it was Master and Commander.

For grins, I typed Sandy Island into Google Earth. First it said it couldn't understand, but offered "Sandy Island, Northern Territory, Australia" in the search bar. I clicked on "Search" and it zoomed in on an island off of Australia! This is much closer to the continent island's coast, so I'm wondering if some other formation hadn't been renamed as such.

I found another island on Google Maps that doesn't really exist. Search for 'Dodola Seaport and Beach', and zoom out a little bit. To the right side of that island, Google Maps shows another island. But when you switch to Satellite, it's not there anymore. I went there and it really doesn't exist.

There were two types of captain in the Royal Navy: 1. any officer commanding a British naval vessel; and 2. the actual rank of captain (referred to as post-captain to distinguish it from the other kind). As such James Cook was both kinds of captain, it's just he didn't hold the rank of captain when he found Australia. Note: Post-captain gets it's name from 'having the post (job) of captain'.
