He definitely lost that duel, but he had a 'get out of jail' card - LeAnn Rimes. She would have moved him forward no matter what. We all knew that, right?! In my humble opinion, his only truly good performance was the audition. The rest were either worse or came pretty close to the audition. Hallelujah, in particular, was actually one of the worst ones for me (though, to be fair, it wasn't easy with such an odd matchup). That said, I feel bad for the one who made Hallelujah great this time - the lady. She made this version STUNNING!

Well there's hope since it's AU. Even though X-Factor's Isaiah Firebrace Sony contract doesn't seem to do much to promote him, (only his first album charted and none of his singles thereafter)....at least it's still in effect. As a young kid 16 he had zero industry connections except Adam. They probably wouldn't DARE drop him since he's Aboriginal Australian and a good ambassador. And he was able to maintain his own style. This guy may have an advantage iwth his very specific genre, guitar and identifiable voice in the Teddy Swims vein.

Before the actual battle I'd thought it wasn't going to work between Reuben and Larissa. But they have been coached excellently into a duet that really works very well. Larissa did great and the choice whom to take through was more or less arbitrary - it was more about genre than musicality. It was more about perceived chances of a judge to have the winning candidate. Larissa's fear that it might not work - she got totally proven wrong here. It really worked. And it works for decades, for Bocelli and other tenors. In an interview with Bocelli about singing a duet with Ed Sheeran the question came up what was learnt from it. Bocelli shared that he had rehearsed the duet in a pop style and Sheeran wanted him to sing in his classical voice. And it really works, Bocelli admitted, and we can all agree.

The blind audition was perfect. The battle duet was perfect from both, and extremely well coached. The next two for me were meh. Reuben has a beautiful singing voice and he must stay on the singing-melodic side of a very loud voice, or it sounds like shouting while trying to sing. Wicked game illustrated the potential again, the Duet with Ms. Rimes was a perfect match and while she adores Reuben's voice, wow, she has one that matches perfectly. "The house" is an oldie but goldie to me, and my memories go back to The Animals, actually. Reuben outperformed all versions I heard in the meantime. The key question I ask myself with all these incredible performers is, "would I buy an album (an LP in the old days, then a CD) or make a playlist of them". That remains unanswered. It needs to be varied while the artist stays true to themselves.
