I would never go to tik Tok for a beauty review, i swear the girls on there are obsessed with everything they try, I never get shown bad/meh reviews - they try a new product, immediately love it and then never show it again

There is a popular youtuber MUA that says she is "obsessed" with the products she is using all throughout her tutorials, in each video. But I love her looks and tutorials, so I just end up muting her lmao because it is annoying to hear "I am just OBSESSED with this shade, it's so pretty!!" 10+ times. and whatever she says, she says the same point three times in a row, in differently reworded sentences...again maybe because youtube videos are longer she feels like she needs to fill up the video and just repeats herself over and over? I thought about leaving some constructive criticism for her but I feel like I would just get dragged or called a "hater"

Tiktok is addictive because you can see multiple fun videos in a short time but I think KZbin is superior. I think KZbin is great because you can create connection with your audience with long format videos and it feels far more personal than tiktok. I enjoy tiktok but I often cannot remember what I watched 10 minutes after I close the app.

exactlyy there are creators that I like on TikTok but I literally have little to no feeling towards them unlike my favorite KZbinr's. Like you have those ytbers that basically "raised" you but I dont feel that way at all with any tiktokers even ones that I used to find really funny and follow. I think that tiktok will basically just become a good place to get news and quick entertainment from but I don't think it'll ever be able to replace KZbin in the sense of community and actually being able to choose what you can see. It also doesn't help that people want to focus on their mental health and better themselves and tiktok is doing the opposite

I feel like if KZbin "reverts" a little it'll do great. The recommendations are so lacking that videos you've previously seen just keep on getting recommended and for some reason when you search for something it gives recommendations? once it fixes that up instead of focusing on other small things it'll come back fast

I think Tik Tok is really the embodiment of everything that is wrong with the internet and social media.... I feel like tiktok reviews aren’t even reviews. People will just say “wow it’s pretty” “it’s easy to apply” “I love it” … like… how is it pretty? Not everyone may agree with what you think is pretty. I get this so much! I’m almost 23 and probably around 7 years or so ago Instagram was my life on the internet, I’d upload like every single day, multiple times a day. Now I rarely use it and it’s just sat on my phone collecting dust. Even with TikTok I don’t tend to sit and scroll on that much anymore. KZbin is and always has been my preferred method of consuming content, I just like watching longer videos with more in depth content personally. And I feel like the likes of TikTok is contributing to such short attention spans in younger generations too😅

The short attention span comment is interesting. I’m 26 and used to use instagram since I was 17 and it was until the age of 20 that I got bored/lost interest. Purely because there was no “social media” interaction. No comments, just likes and there was no sense of a friendly community lol. Now I have no social media. Maybe I might make one when I was play the violin fluently, but that’s about it. Neither do I have any friends so I think that contributes to not want to have social media or whatever.

The guy talking about Kylie's eyeshadow pallet is usually pretty uninformed. He sells his "master classes" but his knowledge base is built almost exclusively using 2016 KZbin techniques. While I don't think he is malicious or bad, but he tries to make appeals to authority while having little real knowledge. He also allegedly worked at Sephora....so the fact that he doesn't understand that almost EVERY makeup brand uses pressed pigments is very sussy.

I was having similar thoughts the other day regarding tiktok - teens now are being fed these short videos regardless if it's doing makeup, explaining something or telling a story, which in the long run will cause their attention span to significantly shorten and they'll have a much harder time learning things that require their attention for longer periods of time such as university subjects.

very true. Even when i grew up on youtube, the videos were average at least 5 minutes. tiktok is significantly shorter than that, let alone nowadays on youtube where the average is 20-30 minutes (a tv show length).

I will always prefer long form content. tiktok is nice for a couple of funny videos but that's it. I do not like the way tiktok is basically a breeding hub for extreme consumerism. Influencers push the idea of excess and often promote items that are blatantly horrible quality too. I think it's damn near worse than the beauty rooms stuff because it reaches people in all communities.

I think this is a really interesting topic. My hot take as an old lady who has seen even more cycles: we are seeing another HUGE uptick in the number of people who are diagnosed (or self diagnosed) with ADHD, and a lot of that stuff teaching people about ADHD or memeing it is on IG or TikTok. What we might see (it's happened before with other technologies) is a backlash against TikTok for actually feeding into issues with inattention because it has an absolutely maniacal way of sucking people in. People will start to question whether it is good for their health and attention span and favour more long form content again. TikTok may extend the time it allowed for videos, but that will undermine its appeal, its addictive qualities, and also its point of difference. In addition, people might finally clue into how it is just as unethical as FB/Meta, if we ever *finally* get a proper expose on that, then we will go through a whole "delete TikTok" thing as well. What I am not sure about is whether people will just *say* they are leaving the platform or actually do it because of how attached people are to it. Spotify found their subscriber and user numbers didn't even change in a noticeable way in the wake of the whole scandal around Joe Rogan, despite all the shouting and shaking of fists online. Tiktok has similar addictive qualities to Twitter, and Twitter somehow manages to ride so many waves, even though it is a terrible platform that is bad for many people's mental health and personal data is constantly mined just like on FB. I dunno.... it's hard to predict the future and humans are notoriously bad at predicting it, but I don't see TikTok staying around unless they evolve, and I suspect any evolution will make them too much like every other platform and will water down its supposed point of difference, especially as its current audience ages out and moves on. People my age mostly watch it so that they can find out what's cool and try to be cool themselves 😆😆

I was also victim of 2015 Instagram 😂 nowadays I’m imune to the likes of Mikayla. I can see what is wrong with “reviews” that are 1 minute or less. They are not really informative - I remember when YT changed from single review to thorough reviews and it had such impact on customers that IMO it also changed brands aproach to marketing (brands market for example complexion products in more thorough way).

I think that people need to realise that we have a whole new generation that is getting into makeup, beauty /lifestyle and the platform they’ve chosen to consume is TikTok. Just like how we all were excited to learn all these things on KZbin, this new generation is excited to learn from TikTok and that means recycling a lot of things cause how many ways can you contour the same face? Lest we forget that the tips and tricks that were trending on KZbin very much existed for a long time outside of it but because 1 influencer goes viral, it gets picked up as some revolutionary technique. Example of this is Baking. When influencer started doing it like it’s a revolutionary method but many pro Makeup artists stated that this is something that has been around for ages. Famously with drag queens Don’t think its fair to coin it as something KZbin has already done since it’s all recycling anyways.

My niece is a TikToker and blew up at age of TWELVE. Ironically, due to being first clip in a KZbin compilation. She is not a Beauty creator but she has been offered PR and sponsorships. Some of the offers have been very exploitative and it is preying on naivety of younger creators. They know any undisclosed sponsorship etc will be pinned on these young creators. Also, they know they are less likely to know their own worth and accept low rates or agree to unpaid contracts. It is very gross when they ignore contact details and slide into private messaging. I think a lot of TikTokers will transition to longer form content - especially if they are creative and passionate. My niece is not even 14 now but already finding the platform to be creatively limiting. However, there will always be new 12/13/14 year olds to fill that void and I do not think brands will stop using opportunities to underpay creators. It will definitely take some type of huge scandal to change anything.

Pro Mua here with over a decade of experience in events, commercial and editorial hair and makeup. Fact of the matter is KZbin beauty guru techniques aren't what actual pro mua's do on clients: our end goal is always to create a look that would look perfect on camera AND in person/real life. Most KZbin (also tiktok) techniques are not in person friendly because the texture you'd end up with is makeup texture, not skin texture. The way most of them layer their skin products almost always ends up caking up throughout the day. And as some other commenters have mentioned, none of their techniques are revolutionary or new: it's been in the industry for decades. Its all down to virality and people then view it as something completely undone before

Both platforms suits different needs. When I’m on tiktok I forget what I watched and who I watched after I scroll up. Even if I decide to follow them it is very unlikely for me to go back and remember their name, at this point if they show back up in the future then that’s the most I will do to search for them lol. I just scroll on the FYP and keep it going. If it’s a product I’m interested in I just screen shot it. KZbin is more memorable because I will watch creators that I’m genuinely interested in and check back on regular basis (not just makeup but all interests). I do like how on tiktok there are more creators from all around the world that manages to come through in the FYP. Also, if a tiktok vid says come back for part 2,3,etc I’m def not checking back in for all of that 😫

I agree with u on this topic! The tik tok beauty gurus upload like 3-4 videos a day and it's just spam content like 15 secs of praising a product, or STOP DOING UR -- LIKE THIS, DO THIS INSTEAD, they are on YT making shorts as well and it's annoying these videos get recommended to me all the time, there's no artistry, no thorough in depth reviews, sometimes even misleading info like a girl said makeup is expired on the date shown on the package, which is really just the 5 years shelf life🤦‍♀ They also do sponsored videos without informing ppl it's an ad. It's sad ppl nowdays love to watch these super short low effort videos instead of watching a youtuber do a in depth 20 min video with efforts, I like to sit down, watch youtubers apply/talk about makeup it's relaxing not having someone scream in ur face OMG LOOK AT THAT HIGHLIGHT Also I'd love to see u do a video on mikayla if that's ur plan! I saw some shady things earlier of her saying she's a jaclyn hill fan and jaclyn inspired her so much and ppl found comments of her on jaclyn's old insta posts, like "must be nice being rich from uploading on YT" or "yikes"

i like johnny, i see his videos on my instagrams fyp. but he definitely blew this out of proportion. i don’t think i have a single eyeshadow palette that doesn’t say “not safe for eye use,” it’s just a legality thing. even those eye glitters you can get that is just a jelly formula with chunks of glitter in them aren’t “eye safe”, they have to put those types of warnings on lots of makeup products. hell, products that have packaging to make them look like food or smell like food have warnings like “do not eat, not real food”, it’s usually just for legal protections, especially in america

It's good in a way, I think KZbin needs some healthy competition. The app, not the creators. KZbin had a monopoly on the market for years, and because of this, they never felt the need to improve anything. Now Tiktok is here, suddenly KZbin has to work for its views. I don't personally have Tiktok, I still prefer the traditional long videos on KZbin, I can see why it could be a good thing.

I’m not trying to make excuses for not following guidelines or undisclosed ads but I can definitely understand why people try and be sneaky and do it, any post I’ve made with #ad always flops and gets shown to much less people than just a regular post of similar content but unsponsored

I feel like at least if your not posting personal stuff or videos with other creaters , there’s less of a chance something controversial happening in short form , whilst at the same time even more likely to have something controversial happening as a short clip without much explanation or context , but with that I feel like the drama cycle like the #muascam on TikTok goes even faster than KZbin drama as creators only have to pick up there phone and reply to the drama and 5 mins later another person can make a short video replying to that person , whereas I feel like KZbin’s rather calculated the way creators reply to drama like they make scripts and will frame the shots of them so it’s more sympathetic and so they don’t say the wrong thing

Personally I will not watch a 20 minute long video review on some sort of makeup product... My favorite length of most KZbin videos is 10 minutes, when we are on 20 it has to be some sort of amazing ass deep dive on some sort of interesting or funny topic. Around 30, it's vlogs from my favorite KZbinrs, and do we go even higher up, it has to be the type of video I can just play without actually having to watch.

Im 21, USA. I use tiktok maybe 2x a month, i actually prefer spending my time watching video essays and stuff. I mostly spend 15-40 mins per video. Tiktok isnt new to me, and you told me why. Its basically insta. And… i dont like instagram. Feels too fake.

I think the reason why tiktok is still so prevalent is bc it's algorithm is freaking amazing and way superior to youtube. It's gotten better here over the years but my god, you watch three videos on tiktok and it magically knows exactly what you want. That's my experience at least. Also the many sub groups on tiktok that you may search for or end up in is pretty fun, it's an entire experience imo. Some things just work so well in short format and youtube hasn't gotten the hang of it just yet (it's getting there) so tiktok is filling a hole that's been left empty pretty much since vine and improved upon it. There's quite a few moderation issues and problem with hate speech being somewhat tolerated or ignored though and that's where it loses points for me but otherwise it's doing what other social media didn't do.

I just like the name Angelika it reminds me of angels but then the character from rug rats lol and spelled w a K Love it. Haha ur very youngggg & I was 14 on Ig but I’m older than ur gen I’m a mix technically & it’s like “wow if I was born earlier I would be a “star” on social media” when I look back and see what I was posting & doing. Timing. Like for Mikayla the timing was wonderful for her and it was just perfect for others and I truly hope every one who wants to have a respectable platform to express their thoughts and opinions on where they can make $ and a loving from it while focusing on hobbies + things they love to do; will come true for everyone. And those who don’t I hope it’s cause they found something different they want and no longer want to be an internet personality or channel.

Mostly reviewing on tiktok it's like they got paid for it ( I'm not attacking anyone) and have a lots ton of filters in theirs videos so they come out like flawless makeup tutorials, I'm in this makeup games for quite some time before that I followed their videos but my makeup doesn't seem like them 😂 , so kinda get used to it , then I quit watching it and i know that makeup is just a makeup it can't make your skin flawless. Agreed they really ruined makeup community.

I feel like Tiktok makes it easier to fake things. Like 1 creator could say 'look at this viral blush! It's amazing, you have to buy it before it sells out!' and everyone jumps on the bandwagon, when actually she's the only person talking about it. People can get away with more on Tiktok than KZbin. If a KZbinr said something went viral on KZbin, you could so easily find out if it's true or not.

I think the creator was aware that there are red dyes that are not FDA approved. To my understanding he tried to point out that unlike the usual warning "not safe around the eyes" that label red, vegan dyes in ehe shadows (eye *pigment* palettes), there is a "not safe for usage on the *face* warning on there, indicating that unlike i.e. blushes that use those red pigments and are safe to use on the face and don't have the warnings that eye pigment palettes do, these products aren't even safe by FDA to use on the face as a whole. So it's different than the whole "we put 'don't use around the eyes' on there bc we have to but you can use it but it might stain".

The thing that bothers me about KZbin is that creators want to make longer videos because that’s what is incentivized but with things like unboxing and reviews, often those honestly don’t need to be 20 minutes long and I get frustrated watching them because it takes forever to get to the main points and often the introduction is long and winding and unrelated. Never mind if you’re looking up a product just for a tutorial of how to use it. Like just show me! Stop talking about your dog for 10 min first! I see this a lot with big KZbinrs who will talk about nothing and put huge pauses between statements and such and then do a prank or whatever and draw that out too when really it could’ve been done in 5 min if that. I do agree though that there is a lot of clickbait unhealthy/dangerous/unhelpful hacks on Tik Tok. And I think it affects attention span negatively.

I think tik tok is great for teenagers because they have the time to be sucked into watching it for long periods of time and absorb a lot of different content in one sitting however it doesn’t really fit into day to day life especially as you get older and have more responsibilities. I think it’ll start to die out because it’s not something that you can watch whilst doing something else as the content is short and you have to swipe constantly. I think it’ll get boring very quickly.

You would think with the authenticity that tik tok has by being so overflooded with everyday people where as Instagram was always influencers with a following to maintain. It’s easier to believe the review of a smaller account for any platform. But tik tok seems to break that barrier unless it is a sponsorship
@mus1quenonst0p

but now we have tons of small accounts and “everyday people” who know the exact model that they have to follow to become an influencer, e.g. feature and speak positively about brands, so there’s an inherent risk of dishonesty from the start.
