I'm actively retired. I live in a tiny trailer house I built. It's situated on a farm where I work quarter days doing odd farm jobs. So my rent and amenities are covered. I'm glad I had the foresight before retirement. I'm very happy.

I’m off grid, no rent or mortgage… my expenses are about 700 a month USA… but, I still need to buy stuff for improvements. But, I’ve got a little shack w a woodstove and water and plenty of electricity w abt 2500 USD invested in solar and an 800 USD invested in a dual fuel generator to charge my batteries during inclement weather.

Staying out of debt is key. Paid everything off in 2007 and it is freeing. And with today’s costs I am so glad. I don’t know how the majority of people are doing it. His and hers car payments, mortgages, cable, electric etc. Not to mention if you have a couple kids. Your lifestyle is very calming and stress free. Keep it up. You dog seems to love it as well! Money isn’t everything.

Well done on paying everything off. It's a great feeling, i remember the feeling of paying off our first house 😊. We have been very fortunate to have bought and sold our houses along our lives and not having a monthly payment, cars are bought second hand and in cash. But we also plan for things and try to not let our ego get in the way of us making good financial decisions. We don't need a big car as we only have one child and a cat 😺. We don't need flashy designer clothes, but we are building a holiday house next to a river, not big, but the views are amazing and we will get a lot of joy from the space, much more than driving fancy cars 😊

I agree. For my 60th birthday I bought 30 acres with a 12'x24' shed. I'm finishing the shed, partly with reclaimed materials, making it into an off-grid home. I have a solar system and will be having a well drilled this year. I walk dogs and pet sit for much of my income. Pet sitting won't be a problem for living off-grid, I can still do that. But most of the dogs I walk are getting older. I can't live off-grid and walk the dogs, my off-grid house is 2 hours away and in the desert. When those clients go to the Rainbow Bridge I won't replace them with other clients. I will go live off-grid.

I have been living these same strategies for 5 years now in an off-grid cabin in the north of Ontario in Canada, and the conclusions you have come to are the same as I arrived at years ago. It is hard to describe to people how freeing yourself from the machine takes work and sacrifice, but not nearly as much as it takes to life on a hamster wheel for the rest of your life. You are buying not just time, but the ability to follow a natural rhythm that gives you more energy and wellbeing, rather than depleting it. So happy to see someone else living this life!

We are a family of 5 on a 38 ft classic sailboat of which actual living space is probably closer to 28 ft. Three years later and we are still onboard traveling the world together. People think we are crazy for selling our home to live on a tiny boat. We don't have any debt, we don't have a lot of extra junk, heck we don't even have a TV. We now have the time to home school our boys and travel. Together we experience the challenges and highs of this amazing lifestyle.

This is really amazing how much we all have in common, how beautiful and colourful the world is, and how much we can share with each other. This is really something as big as the world is. I prefer to spend my valuable time watching and listening to people who are down-to-earth, honest, and who have positive aims in life. The world is so full of those who are airy-fairy, and would lead one down the garden path with their fanciful ideas. I am 81 yrs old, and have experienced generations that were much more steadfast and upright in their practices and beliefs than today's lot, on the whole; and I truly appreciate your channel which assures me that there are still some "out there" that know how to experience a better life than most people desire to live. I like how open and honest you are. About many things. Money. The lack of glamour. The inevitable failures. Bad ideas that need to be corrected later on... Even "noises in the toilet in a tiny house". These are real concerns that most would avoid talking about, but they do bring stress to life. I like it that you talk about these things. Thank you. PS: And regarding your honesty about posting videos that were not related to tiny living (like the hiking ones), I follow some channels from Japan that do van camping. There is no talking, and that's why I and others are there. Just seeing the person camping, cooking, breathing in the nature around them. Then, suddenly, in one video, the guy decides to talk. It was like glass shattering. Not because I can't stand people talking, but that's not why I'm there for. A video from another channel in the US, the guy is silently camping on his truck (house built atop the truck), and then he decides to play the guitar and sing. If I wanted to see people play the guitar and sing, I would have searched for it, like I did many times. So it's nice that you had this experience, and I'm sure you will get out of this "downwards" spiral. Your content is really valuable.

I live in a small trailer court in the mountains and i am actually trying to work less and live more sustainable. I can whatever i can. And also look nice sales for instance i got a bushel of potatoes for $18 and i gave some to family to help them out but have enough to can for the winter. I try to raise my own vegetables but still have to go to local farmers that have pick your own. But I am working on my debt so eventually i can just have to pay for the necessary stuff. I liked this video very much.

This is a really good video that shares some basic principles about how to have economic freedom. The level of debt that most people have is astounding, and when they lose their job they are days away from bankruptcy. Not everyone has to choose this off-grid DIY lifestyle to have economic freedom, but there are lots of lessons to help others think about how to do it themselves. And you have an excellent, matter-of-fact way of presenting information that isn't telling people what to do. I imagine that going and doing speaking about tiny house living also draws people to your channel, so it can do double-duty in terms of income production! I am pretty sure I saw an article about you just show up on my social media, so yes, you do get attention for your lifestyle! Some folks also end up doing a second channel for things that aren't directly related to their main channel, so you may want to just put the travel videos on with other topics that are interesting to some of us so that you don't lose momentum here, but perhaps get to build another audience from other topics too.

Your lists of assets sounds nice Anders but in my opinion those are not your biggest assets. Your biggest asset you built up in these four years is what you have learned. You learned to become a public speaker, You learned how to write a book and publish it, You learned how to create a permaculture garden, You learned how to create video's, You learned how to build a water system for your house, Your learned all kinds of other building stuff, You learned how to forage, but most of all you learned to stand on your own two feet and that's an asset no one can take away from you! Perhaps this is more easy for me to understand as I have worked in a sweat shop sewing clothing. I have an electric supply and use bottles has with my own well and septic tank. The maintenance is difficult but not impossible as I am retired, it is not possible to live off grid yet but I hope that the future technologies will make it possible. Birdy

I’m sure he buys dog food for his dog. The beef he had cooked obviously is from a market. He never said he doesn’t ever purchase meat or other household supply items like toilet paper from the grocery store. Anders, I am so sorry that the hiking videos didn’t do well. I’m so surprised because I LOvED them. Your drone footage was awesome. This amazing lifestyle, to live simply, yet remain connected to the world, only became possible over the past few years.
