It might be important to mention that if cutting an image from a book or magazine to be mindful of the page(s) underneath and to use a cutting mat, if necessary, or remove the page with desired image before cutting with an x-acto blade.

Do you ever make copies and use the copies instead of the original book. not trying to preserve books but more so that you can use the same image repeatedly. thanks

What is your opinion on printed items off the internet that are not copy writed and using them in your collages.
@PaperCutswithColleen6 жыл бұрын
This is a tough topic because there's so much grey area. If there is no copyright on an image then there is theoretically no use issue but it's often hard, if not impossible, to determine who or where an image originally came from on the internet. I think it's worthwhile to really consider your intention when sourcing materials and what collage as a medium offers as opposed to, as an example, using your own photography. I know this answer is a bit vague mostly because my views/opinions are really specific to my worldview and creative practice. I always encourage collage artists I work with to clarify their intent and beliefs as a way to help create a framework that allows collage to be an expression without worry. I hope this response helps! If you'd like to discuss more, feel free to reach out via my website, www.colleenmcculla.com.

I had MUCH rather use scissors....in fact, I use a pair of HAIR CUTTING scissors I had upstairs - than any kind of Exact-O blade. But that's just me.

Boo! Please realize that different collage artists use very different tools to cut with. I use hair-cutting scissors for smaller images & two old pairs of SKARS stainless scissors for larger images......Some artists use expensive ITALIAN scissors.....Some use scissors bought at the dollar store....Some use Exact-O knives.......Some use medium priced scissors from the craft store. One lady even uses "eyebrow scissors" (which I didn't know there was such a thing til today!) So don't make light of this video. It all depends on what's most reasonably priced, works best, & is easiest for YOU! : )
