@@chriswalker5409 so I had the same prob it turns out if your auto project is on and its still not working it could be because u need to kinda "tell" fusion hey I want to ref this line. it wouldn't work for me when I would try to draw the line, but If I pressed esc to exit the line command and then moved my mouse around that area a bit kinda "looking" for the the ref and theeeeen pressed "L" to start a new line command but don't click anywhere yet. continue to hover around that area until those blue dashed lines popped up. once they pop up fusion knows that I want to ref those dashed lines so then I continue to do the lines like he did and I got the snap. I guess this is fusions way of temp turning off the snap incase I didn't want it? and then turning it back on if I hover over it to tell fusion nooooo I actually do want it to snap now... ehhh what do I no I'm only on day 5 bwahahaha. any hope it helps future viewers!

The reference lines weren't showing for me either with the setting on, but I solved it by dragging the dimensions lines for both of the 0.07" lines the other way, so they intersected. With the dimensions intersecting, the line tool would snap to the intersection point, letting me make the same line.

Great tutorials, thank you Kevin. I'm stumped by one thing on this model's process though. When I was doing the rectangular pattern, choosing the same axis you did, no matter what, it wanted to repeat in the opposite direction from the intent on the 10.4 x 8. I figured out -10.4 x 8 forced the correct direction. The 1.95 x 2 had no issue. Strange but true.

5th lesson in and the interface is finally starting to make sense to me. I actually have to let go of my assumptions about how complicated operations should be and then just start from the basics, which is how the interface and operations are designed to be applied... very literal and basic. Point here and there, then select this, then enter a dimension... done. Great tutorial series on Fusion 360.

Hello m8, very well made tutorial! 1 maybe unrelated question - is it safe to 3D print an Ice Cube Tray and use it? (maybe there is some unhealthy stuff in the 3D print mixture i dont know.)
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Etzerdlas. There are some "food-safe" filaments out there... however, many critics point out that the process (specifically the nozzle) make it not food safe. I always recommend using the 3d-printed object as a tool for making a mold or molded object. You could create a food-safe silicone mold from a 3d printed part. Something like this ice cube tray could even be created with a vacuum former and food-safe sheets of plastic. Cheers, Kevin :)

@paddyovideo 5 жыл бұрын
Ok, had some problems with this one and I see others had the same. I caught where you were modeling in inches instead of mm, so changed my settings. However, when doing the first fillets and you said to make it "0.13 in. for the radius" my brain converted that to 13 (like in mm) instead of .13 You can imagine what my sketch looked like with a fillet of 13 inches! I also had the lines in the fillets, but remembered that you had shown us in a previous video the setting for that, so was able to remove them. Last problem, and the one that caused me to give up for the night (and come back to it today) was that I could no way get the fillet to work on the final sketch. I read through the Comments here, reset my Preferences to Default as you recommended, then checked my settings against the ones you recommend. Still couldn't get it to work, so did a Google search for "Fusion 360 fillet does not work on sketch" and got the answer right away. I was using the F key to bring up the fillet command window, but that does not work for sketches. One needs to bring up the other Fillet command in the Sketch menu, that does not have a shortcut. I had installed Fusion 360 just last week for the first time, and the interface is much different from the one you show in your videos. To find the proper Fillet command that I needed, I had to click on "Sketch" in the top menus (Solid, Surface, Sheet Metal, Tools, Sketch), then Modify and the fillet command is in there. Probably you told us that in a previous video, but I can't remember everything, apparently! Works perfectly when you use the right one!

Hi, John. Thanks for sharing all of this. The fillet command shortcut seems to get everyone at some point. I wish they let you toggle back and forth between each fillet type from the same dialog. Hi, Kevin. Glad to hear you're enjoying the series so far. You should have a number of different folders within the appearance box. Glass, Plastic, Leather and Cloth, etc. Within each of those folders, there should be sub-folders. I selected PLASTIC and then the OPAQUE folder. Make sure that you drag the appearance window to a larger size...sometimes it's hard to see everything available. You may also have to download certain materials if you haven't used them before. To edit the color, double-click on the color (or right-click on the color and select "edit") at the top of the appearance box and then adjust the color accordingly. Let me know if you still can't find it. Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi again Kevin. Not sure how you can possibly have the time to answer all these questions, but if you can great! My question is about the view cube starting position. Mine seems to be "backwards" from yours, causing me to often pick the wrong plane and then have issues down the line. With my cube oriented as yours is TOP/FRONT/RIGHT, my x axis is across the bottom of the front (instead of the back as yours) and my z axis is up the left side of the front plane. The y axis is totally hidden. is there a way for me to rest mine to match yours? Cheers!
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, William. For a few of the tutorials in the 30 days series (some of the oldest ones, the first few had been revised) they have the Y-axis set to the "up" orientation because that was the Fusion 360 default at the time of recording. The default is now the Z-axis, which is why almost all of my videos will have the Z-axis set to "up". Hi, thanks for these tutorials. Perfect way to learn the software by making stuff. I searched the comments but don't see anyone else having my same issue. When I try to run the shell command with a .07 inch thickness it spits out an error. Says "The operation could not heal the edited region of the model. Try adjusting the values or changing the input geometry" So if I increase the thickness it eventually works. 0.10 doesn't work but finally at .11 it works. Would like to know why this happens so I can avoid it in the future.

Thank you so much for these wonderful videos! Perhaps you have time to address an issue I'm having a lot. This is just the latest example. When you create the outside "form" that goes around the ice cube tray, it seems that you get a "point" to attach your line to the existing model. I never seem to be able to see or find these types of points so when I create these new objects, they aren't ever connected to the existing objects. I hope this makes sense. I ran into this problem with the Fit Point Spline in the Whiskey bottle tutorial too. Any idea on what I'm doing wrong to not see "points" to attach these lines to on an existing sketch?

Hi, Ladorna. This may be a difference in settings. I recorded all of these tutorials with the Fusion 360 default settings. However, from time to time the Engineers change one of the default settings. Click on your username in the upper right-hand corner > preferences > then under "General" > "Design" tab...then select the following setting: "Auto project edges on reference". That should take care of the issue with you not getting the snapping points/reference edges. You'll have to restart your Fusion 360 in order to get these changes to take effect. You can also check out all the settings I have by going to my web page - bit.ly/defaultsettings Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi Kevin, love your lessons. I have some trouble with this one though, Why did you have to select 4 faces for the shell command and how dis that command turn a boxy tray into a slim fit tray? Please help, thank you.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Dân Trần. You can think of the shell command as applying a specified thickness to an existing shape or contour - where the added thickness would follow the shape and all other material will be removed. In this tutorial, we already had our "ice cube" cutouts at the top/inside of the box shape. Therefore, we wanted the rest of our object to follow the same exact shape as the ice cube cutouts (to mimic how this would be manufactured and to cut down on wasted material). The reason we had to select all four faces was to tell F360 that we want this to be "shelled" or cutout on all four sides. Otherwise, if we just selected one face, for example, the ice cube would not be symmetrical. It sometimes takes some trial and error with the shell command to see how Fusion 360 will process the results. Complex models that have a lot of curvatures can produce different results. I hope this helps! Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Virtual Music. Thanks for watching and commenting! That is a great question - and if I remember right it can be a number of small factors that differ from model to model - the orientation of your model and where you select for the direction of the pattern play an important part. Say I actually printed an ice tray like this. Is it safe to store water (or food, really) in 3d printed objects?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Eran. "Food Safe" is something that is really debated in 3D printing. Ultimately, it really depends on a number of factors, and of course, your decision. Technically speaking, PLA and ceramics are materials for 3D printing that are "food safe". However, I personally don't think its worth the risk. I always recommend using custom 3D prints to create a food-safe silicone mold or vacuum formed mold with a food-safe material. These methods also ensure that the models are watertight, which is something you don't always get with 3D printing. Cheers, Kevin :)

@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Nick. Great question! The shell feature essentially traces the contour of all existing surfaces and adds a thickness based on your "Shell thickness" that you define. With that said, how you select objects does have some affect on how the shell command works. You will notice with the ice cube tray we had to select the four sides and the bottom, as we wanted the entire bottom to be shelled. If we selected just the bottom (worth experimenting if you have time) then you'll see the results are much different. I hope this helps a bit! I need to make a video that covers the shell command in-depth. Cheers, Kevin :)

Helper tips: The rectangle pattern command will be all backwards for you. Just use negative numbers for the distance and it'll work out. If your sketch line tool isn't snapping between the 0.07 and 0.07 lines, ESC or cancel our of the current line, then start the line command again and slowly drag from one line to the intersection of the next line, keeping the blue dotted line with you the whole way. Once it lines up, a second blue dotted line will appear and you're golden.

I watched the previous videos but actually started making things on day 5 (just because) and I was wondering if everyone has the same issue I am getting with the pattern tool. In order for the symmetry to look like his, I had to use 1.98 for the distance of the 2 rows so that the edge would not look thicker on one end. His math of 1.95in did not add up if both rows are .2 in from the edge shouldn't it be 1.98in for the Distance and 2 for the copies on the screen at (5:45) Also, is Fusion supposed to be an accurate visual representation because my objects on screen look wider in the part farthest from me, shouldn't they taper out as if originating from a vanishing point out in the distance... because they do not.
