it depends on the matchup. if you are playing for Short trades- PTA, Long trades- CONQ

I seem to always win my lane as renek but then I get shafted in the mid-late and end up losing :( is Renek bad below emerald?

He's just harder because games go longer and your mistakes are equally punishing in a different way, obviously in higher elo keeping a lead is very essential but if you do drop deaths even with a lead, a few consecutive deaths can be really hard hitting to your tempo for the game. My advice, mute the people in your teams, focus on your macro game and play for dragons, use red trinkets to catch people out and control the game in your own variables, try and be more confident in your gameplay to take every objective and eliminate the main enemy win condition and play around your own.
