I can recommend taking the courses from Leila. I have learned a lot and they are extremely useful in a work-environment. I also would like to stress that it's better to give accurate answers for your skills. You will need those for the job if you get it. And it's not good to be fired in your probation period for not knowing what you said you knew. Also if you don't get fired the stress level of doing a job above your expertise is quite high. honesty in an interview is very important from both sides.

If I were asked to use INDEX and MATCH in an Excel test, I would definitely run into difficulties. I've used them before, but I don't know if an interviewer would appreciate me opening KZbin to watch one Leila's videos as a refresher the way I normally would in a work environment. On the other hand, maybe I would get extra points for knowing where to look!

At one time I am was an expert spreadsheet user (123). Now, I am a more of a DBMS person (advance) and now am just a casual spreadsheet user. When I do have to use advance tasks in spreadsheets, I think DBMS. I know often there is an equivalent way of doing it in spreadsheet. I can be done, it is just matter of looking it up. Advance spreadsheet sheet features seems to get users to use more DBMS functionality.

This was a brilliant idea for a video ... and very well done (no surprise). Leila comments at the 1:18 mark " ... If you prefer to learn in a more structured way with a lot more hands-on practice, taking a course might be good preparation for you ...". No, not 'might' ... but 'will'. The material is well organized and delivered in understandable nuggets.

As an interviewer, I always ask people about familiarity with Excel. Many have said they are good with it, but freeze when given a test that starts with a blank sheet. It's then you find out they know how to use an already constructed file, but have no idea how to start at square one. Knowing the functions/key phrases sometimes is not as good as being creative to reach an answer using a blank palette.

As an interviewer, I find it hard to get a nail on a persons excel skills. People often truely believe that they mastered Excel, but they often do not even realize how much there is to know. Also, knowing your way around Excel functions is one thing, but that can be trained really well on the job. What matters even more is a comprehensive understanding of "How" a task should be solved. Like, how do I setup a spreadsheet so that it is safe to use, error resistant, usable by other people, do I better use VBA oder Powerquery... Asking questions and using tests is the key here!

A big factor in the sort of questions you get asked is likely to be the size of the organisation. For example, in a larger organisation they are more likely to have people who do the VBA development (probably along with other development work) but in an SME they probably won't. I'm surprised not to see DAX in the list.

I have been using Excel since 1997..Thing is I hate tests that test on memory or that test on wizardry. If you can do basic charts , pivot tables ,power query , power pivot, Basic DAX. You are good to go. Spice up with databases, then you are a hero. I dont worry about memorizing specific functions. I look them up when I need to. I also feel VBA is not a must know tool for most users out there. A little macro knowledge can be helpful. I like this channel because of the wonderful tips that can make one a rock star...

I'm always surprised to hear that someone got asked about Excel charts in an interview. To me that seems more "froufy" - it's make it look pretty stuff, not something useful or practical in most cases. My experience has always been that charts are used for external reporting, occasionally by HR, and for sales/marketing but no one internally ever looks at them or even wants them - from the CEO to the CFO to project managers and team leads, everyone wants to see the actual data (obviously, summarized in most cases, not the full data set, but in something like a well-designed pivot table, never in a chart or graphic). I've been a financial and billing analyst for 10+ years and worked in various mid-level management jobs for 10 years before that and no one has ever asked me for a chart; the couple times I provided one because I thought it might illustrate some point better, everyone completely ignored it.
@Mazen_20163 жыл бұрын
i think maybe in interviews they over test the applicants , maybe in the actual job they wont need all the stuff they've been asked about or tested the about , but i think their point of view is "to know more than you need" maybe !

I’m the lead accountant at my company, so I’ve interviewed a lot of candidates over the years for various levels, and I always ask them to rate themselves on Excel knowledge, and they of course are all experts. I then ask them my favorite interview question: what’s your favorite Excel formula, and when did you last use it? A lot of the “experts” freeze up when I ask that, and say something like VLOOKUP. I’m typically less concerned with what they say, and more interested in how excited they are about the topic. The best candidates come back with a quick answer, and explain both how they learned it, and how it improved their process.

But company will prefer to vba candidate.... Bcs power query anyone can learn in few days but when comes to vba it's not a cup of tea for some excel user.
@andrewmoss64493 жыл бұрын
You can pretty much gauge someone’s overall knowledge of Excel by asking them about VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH and XLOOKUP. If they can only explain how to use the first, it’s very likely they’re a novice. If they can explain all three, it’s a good indication they will also be aware of how to use the other new functions and dynamic arrays.

Working in a country like Belgium, the most difficult things is to know the name of functions in different languages. I'm at the level where Excel starts to have a lot of concurrence from other BI tools such as Business Objects (SAP), Qlikview, etc but they often have a final button to generate an excel report in the end just as an easy to access way to share reports. Microsoft did his best to develop Power Pivot, Power Query, Power Bi so sometimes if i'm just only using excel, if got to remender how things went to create same levels as what i did in the BI tool, but depending on the employer i work in Dutch, French or English version, luckely with the same country settings. And even though in the menu everything is on the same place it's like in another language i have to start all over again, i do not know or i didn't try yet that if i'm in a dutch situation Excel accepts English formulas and i know that i have to try if to use a "," or like in Dutch ";" in the formulas, i know this is a particular situation, we even do not use a QWERTY keyboard

What's the importance of semi-colon (;) in Excel? If I write 3 in cell A1, 5 in cell B1 and in C1 a formula =A1+(A1>B1), what will be the result ? With these questions, I got the candidate tottering. There are so many intricacies in Excel which most of us don't know. Most of the people feel that VLOOKUP is the end of Excel, which is their huge underestimation. Thanks Leila for educating us. Well ... is that what employers expect in US? In my position I need to work with data, analyse and report, but what I need to really know in excel? 1. I need to be able to prepare some mockups of the reports or to test and present new report, but the detailing and final realization is then passed to a BI professional who just have to do what I say :-) My emploer is sometimes upset I use PowerQuery extensively as they don't like/understnd the initial load ...

anyway - nowadays if the question is to describe drawbacks of VLOOKUP for me its biggest drawback is the existence of XLOOKUP. The moment I get the feeling the employer wants me to use old version of excel, it is not him trying to eliminate me as candidate, it is me trying not to become an employee.

@@LeilaGharani As Peter Teil would say, "Competition is for losers", one area for youtube that has no competition so far is Google glide tutorials, and how it can be used with Data studio (possibly linked through coupler.io but I haven't played around enough yet). Right now I'm trying to figure out how to make an app for our foremen to do their daily reports on their phones a little easier. There's so many applications though, from payments, to delivery tracking, quality control or safety documentation.. and you can send stuff from the google sheets to make reports. Google data studio should be able to give your presentations to all your CEO's and the coupler.io app should connect your reports from the glide app to your presentations for live updates. Tutorials on the use of these apps is minimal and could have a huge impact for businesses and hopefully your youtube channel, because I love the way you deliver your content.

Hm... interesting... I am working in the field of data analysis and to my embarrassment, i never obtained any excel skills. I am pretty experienced in getting the data from excel using vbs or python or R and then build the charts in powerbi or grafana or tableau or SSRS or even build a web application to present it but i would have hard time doing it in excel... I assume you are from USA, is it common there the employer to expect the candidate to be proficient in excel? I work mostly in Europe and Russia and i don't believe that many data analysts are that proficient here...

python, r or tableau are far more complicated/complex than excel. I assume you are far from entry level if you know the three tools mentioned above. Or at least I hope you are. Surprised you didn't mention SQL though, which is the bread and butter of analysis, and rightfully so.

@@de_da_oo oh... i like to believe I'm pretty experienced. I am working in this area for 9 years. Of course, It is for others to judge my skills, but i use those tools for work for quite some time. And i also use some other tools like Matlab and even i build software for data acquisition so i also use lower level programming languages like Micro C, step 7, etc... they are used for PLCs and controllers to det the data from various sensors. And of course we use sql here. That is pretty common here. And i think for anyone that works in that area SQL is something they need to be pretty good at and i felt like there's no need to mention it. Sorry.

I found the types of questions asked a little surprising. The focus seemed to revolve around specific attributes and features of Excel. I would have thought for at least some of the senior level positions the focus would have been more towards the conceptual level of data analysis. The most frightening interview regarding Excel would go something like this, "Hello, I am Leila Gharani and I will be conducting this interview."
