My mom always loves to tell the story about how when I was little I came into the doctor really sick with pneumonia. Like any sick little kid, I didn't want someone poking me and I certainly didn't want to open my mouth so the doctor could see my throat. Instead of just calling in a nurse to restrain me and get the exam done, my pediatrician offered to do an exam on my stuffed animal first. She listened to his heart, did a reflex test, gave him a shot with a bandaid, and even diagnosed him with cataracts (he was very "well loved" and his plastic eyes were crackled). At the end she asked if I was ready for it to be my turn and lo and behold, I was suddenly very cooperative. It was thanks to her that despite being in and out of the doctor's office often as a child (I had a good number of health issues), and despite my occasional fussiness, I never developed a fear of phobia of doctors. pediatricians
@tessat3382 жыл бұрын
Our dentist and hygienist did something similar with our two-year old son. I was examined first by the hygienist and our dentist wandered in during my exam and cleaning. We started talking about children's tv and the contents of the office treasure chest filled with toys. My son got to pick out FIVE toys while I was getting my exam. They were all discussing the quality of the toys and the options for toothpaste flavors, like chocolate and bubble gum! By the time my exam was finished, my son, the hygienist and the dentist were all old friends. Since we were there and since my son had seen ahead of time what a dental exam entailed, he felt comfortable getting into the chair and letting the hygienist brush his teeth with the special flavored tooth paste. Then, since the dentist "happened" to be there, my son was proud to show the dentist his new teeth and to let the dentist "count" his teeth. My son has never developed a phobia of dentists either.

When I was little, I used to refuse to leave the pediatricians office without hugging my doctor. Even if I was just getting seen by nurses for a flu shot, I'd walk to the back to say hello. He was a great doctor. Years later, when I was shadowing a surgeon in a surgery center, I saw him but didn't want to disrupt a busy man. I told my mom and she texted him to tell him I guess. When he found out I was at the surgery center, he drove back to the building on his lunch break and sat in the back with me and talked about my med school aspirations between two surgeries. Pediatrics isn't easy, but I've never met a doctor as kind and caring as my old pediatrician. Edit: Just got a job working at his office for the summer so I can get clinical hours for medical school!!! I’m so excited!!! Edit 2: I just received an early admissions offer for MED SCHOOL!!!! I’m a sophomore now, so it guarantees my matriculation into med school after I graduate! I can’t stop crying, I can’t believe I’m going to be a doctor!

A little late to the party but I will never forget when i was interning for a couple of weeks in neuropediatrics, we had a 6-year old with GBS - she had lost the ability to walk in just a couple of days, was always in pain and crying. There was a a resident who looked quite overworked most of the time, didn't smile a lot and one day, we were sitting in the residents' room doing paperwork when the other resident came from outside opening the door and said "Dr. x, someone is here to see you" and in walked the little girl smiling and holding her mother's hand then she limped on her own to the desk he was sitting at and his face immidiately lit up when he saw her then she hugged him. The scene kept playing in my head for weeks after and I still remember it and smile from ear to ear.

My pediatrician was always someone i trusted so much. When I was little, I always loved seeing him despite being normally shy. When I turned 16 and finally told him I was feeling anxious and depressed, I was scared he wouldn't take me seriously because when I had panic attacks to the point I was in the hospital afraid I was dying, I always thought I annoyed the staff (and I get maybe I did) he just hugged me and said "I've known you since you were a baby, so don't be afraid or anxious around me, I'm always here to help." Sweetest man ever
@elikeenan13611 ай бұрын
Honey: When you are so panicked that you are in the hospital, then you deserve to be welcome there. You are not a burden or an annoyance. My mom works in a pediatric ER and when kids come in who are having some sort of non-body problem (in kid talk: scared or sad or mad) they are welcome and all the nurses wish is that there was a concrete treatment they could give. Your experiences are valid, you are important, mental health is health. Feeling like you were going to die is a perfectly good reason to access health care. 🌻

Surgical Technology is the best job ever!!! In school we relearn everything from kindergarten, like how to count. How to get dressed and help dress others. What to call all our toys, how to share our toys and how to ask for more. We also learn how to clean up after ourselves. Then, in practice, we get to hand everything to someone else and (quietly) tell them here, you do it. We ask for things and the circulator has to get it for us. Then at the end of the case I always think wow, I won that round, let’s play again!

At the end of the shift covered in urine and bruised from handling a 40 minute behavior of a guy bigger than you, sitting in a Mandt hold on the for 20 of it in his urine after he through you up against the wall going after another resident that sneezed in a scary way...then having to change and continue teaching your class of 40 year olds how to brush their teeth the same you have every day for 5 years. Then do 45 minutes of charting and 15 on the behavior trying to explain what caused it and how i or the other staff could have avoided the scary sneeze from a guy in another room. To have one one of the residents come up and give you one of the most REAL hugs you will ever get in your life.... and make sure you are coming back tomorrow.... thats why we did. Those hugs...sure wasn't the money or the 'hum' grateful bosses for covering 2 extra shifts rhat week or bureaucracy of state and federal mandates and rules the contridicted each other and/or made absolutely no frigging sense with situation we were working with... it wasn't the supervisors appreciation for how sore and hurt you where or how you missed lunch and came in early so you didn't get breakfast so it was working on about 20 hours since you ate. ... nope it was those hugs right there....

I don’t know about hospital pediatrics but I LOVE my children’s pediatrician. He keeps a binder of vaccine evidence in every room with a one page article that is well written in layman’s terms followed by more information about studies. His NP is amazing and he just got a PA as well meaning now 3 people who can treat kids in a small private office, plus his fantastic staff. The amazing thing he does that no other doctors have done (in my experience) is when we have needed specialists he makes sure we are seen. When my son was 3 months old he had issues requiring a pediatric pulmonologist, they said the soonest we could be seen was in 2 weeks, he personally called the doctor and we received a call back that they would see us the next day. Another time I had a question about getting my kids tested for a genetic disease that causes kidney stones that I have, he wasn’t familiar with it and immediately pulled out his cell phone and texted a pediatric urologist to ask if we should see her for a work up. Recently my daughter was 12 and her arm wouldn’t stop hurting, it seemed like a nurse maid’s elbow (dislocated elbow common when small kids get yanked by the hand) they had us wait and when they came back had an address for a pediatric orthopedist and said they would fit us in when we showed up. Thank goodness it was a sprain according to x rays, I truly thought it was dislocated by the amount of pain she was in (I think it is possible it did dislocate but it popped back in when she grabbed it to cushion it, she has loose joints and extra flexibility/some double jointedness, we are working on strengthening with PT so her muscles can better protect her joints)

After 30 ++ years of being a pediatrician I've never perfected the art of swadling. It never comes out out tight (or right), much less perfect. Thank goodness for so many fellows working with my support who are able to achieve this!!!!

Its funny, my dad who was a pediatrician in canada for almost 3 decades, used to always wear a suit and would never wear any costumes or anything fun/ridiculous like that, like always super professional. But I haven't met a phsyician who was as admired and respected by his patients and colleagues. I love your videos man. got my own peds interviews in a couple weeks!

Only thing missing here is when they age out of your care... But they still remember you. Seen some teen patients who specifically went back to thank their oncologists a few years later ..... It's amazing....

Pediatricians are a GIFT. My pediatrician saw me until I was 18 and kept up a drawing I'd done when I was 6 or 7 hanging in his office until he retired (and gave me flack every time I came in because I'd spelled "greatest" wrong). I picked my son's first pediatrician because she reminded me of Doc and she never steered us wrong. We moved out of state over a year ago and I think I miss her more than my own doctor...

It takes a special breed of person to go into pediatrics. Imagine not just the hugs, but all the bad news you have to deliver to families about their kids not getting better. It takes a big heart and a resilient soul.

Now I know why everything's worth it at the end in pediatrics 😂 That's actually really sweet 🤗❣️ it would be sweeter if it was without the 50% chances of being coughed in your face. Lol 🤣

Pediatrías is amazing. All is forgotten when at the end of the day mom or child are genuinely grateful and they like you .

Every time I drive to work I’m thinking 'duck all of this, I’m going to quit, I don’t wanna do this all day' and want to scream just thinking about some parents. Then a six/seven year old's eyes light up when they see me and they tell me they've missed me and I remember how nice my job is :)

My kids CRNP is the best. Has every detail of my kids memorized, recognizes them on sight, and has come over to say hi a couple times when seeing us out and about. Plenty of doctors think they're God's gift to man, but with pediatricians it's often true.

Being in Pediatrics is a bit like giving birth. Selective amnesia kicks in and you forget the bad stuff. 20 years out of residency and I just remember the hugs!

That is the single most accurate description I have seen of pediatric residency on KZbin!! "I can't be at three places at once" is something we say almost every 2 hours😂

Awwwwwwww. When my second baby went in for her first office visit, we had a new pediatrician. He looked her in the face and said, “You look like you just want to sing.” It enchanted both of us.

I miss our pediatrician back where we lived last. This new one near home is very nice and compassionate as well. Growing up, my whole family saw the same family medicine physician. He was awesome. We got lucky

Brilliant! I love the moment when other Doctors have discuss "which specialty is like piece of cake" and talking about pediatrist who appears immediately for ruining every argument they have. -- It's not a "funny hat". It's a hat of pain. No one except pediatrist deserves to wear it.

This is my 4 babies pediatrician. She's awesome!! I literally read medical journal synopsis on the vaccine and decided in a 15 min window of speaking with her decided it was the only choice for my kiddos. She really is apart of our families trusted advisors.

Omg I love it. My kids doctor is always so frantic when she comes in, always apologizes for how long it's taking her, and I always put on my massage therapist voice and let her know it's okay, and that she's fantastic.
