basically, just place pixels and make them transparent if you want to have a neon effect.

Kind of, instead of making them trasnparent, you're bluring them, giving them a gradient of colour and transparency at the same time, that, combined with a bright opaque center, leads to a neon effect.

Nice! I was gonna put my glows in engine but I feel like this would be a much better option(when possible) performance wise. I'm kinda new to game development so maybe I'm wrong...gonna try it anyways :)

Unless the glowing is going to change throughout the game, it's better to do it this way, yes. If you check out, my last game, Shotgun Billie (warsvault.itch.io/shotgun-billie-demo), you can see that the heat glow from his legs changes a lot throughout gameplay, so, in that game, the glow was done in-engine. I'm glad the tutorial was helpful!

@@WarsVault that's pretty much what I was thinking when I said "when possible". This was the first video I seen of yours so I will definitely check that game out. I've only been teaching myself this stuff for a month or two. And I've had to learn the art side of things as much as the technical stuff. It's so interesting learning these things. So much to learn. I appreciate your advice. I haven't exactly started making a "game". Alot of practicing art and trial and error on how to develop things.

@@wessredd7237 We all gotta start somewhere. Brackeys has some nice tutorials on how to get a neon-like effect in-engine in unity. If you don't have much programming experience, you could try using Construct 2 or 3, to get a good feel on game and level design, mechanics and such, before diving in to coding, trying to learn both at the same time is possible, but quite difficult, I wish you the best of luck. hey hey i know a better thing listen to me just duplicate the layer set it's blend mode to add and if you want more glow duplicate it again and then add blur

When I apply the blur to the flash layer, it can't be seen through layer 3. Merging down would just result in however layer 3 looks, any suggestions for this? Please and thank you!

Better put, the blur doesn't seem to go outside the lines of the object for me

@@chillwithmoose Hm, if the blur doesn't go outside the lines, it could be that there is a selection, make sure nothing is selected when you blur.

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but when I use the blur effect it blurs the entire drawing as in all the layers

I see, when looking at the convolution matrix window, where you select the blur, make sure the box on the right side, above the preview checkbox, is set to "Selected" and not "All", else, it will apply the blur to everything.

I can't say for sure, but, as Libresprite is an older version of Aseprite, it might work.

The layer stacking is a bit weird to understand at first, but, think of it like having two of the same sprite, but, the back one is darker and blurred.

didn't work. it reversed the colors and made a dark shade on the outside circle.

That's weird, I suggest you follow the tutorial again closely, as inverting colours is only achievable by using the negative setting in the convolution matrix menu (F9), which is something that does not happen in the tutorial. Also, make sure you have "Selected' instead of "All" in the convolution matrix menu, to make sure you're only changing the current layer. Good luck!
