The major point with the compression release is that it has to release the compression before the next beat hits, so that the new transient could come through. So the release depends on tempo of beats. At 125bpm you get ca. 2 beats per sec., so the release needs to be shorter than 0.5 - otherwise everything is compressed continuously and even the attack never comes into play. Knee shape decides with what motion (starting quick or slow, usually switching speed half-way) does the compression go to 100%. The release tempo is also very important with vocals - so that it is released when the next word begins (if we want it clearly hear, the first letter articulated, cutting through the mix - or do we want it mumbo-jumbo).

Fantastic advice. Thank you very much for this. Have always been a little confused with what I should set the release, and attack time for that matter, to.

In my tracks, the maximum note speed is 1/16. Calculated with a calculator for 126 BPM, 1/16 is 119 ms. So, in order for all my drums to be compressed, I have to use a release no more than 119ms?

I know this was two years ago, just wanted to know if anybody thinks this is possible on IOS garage band or not even worth attempting. I can mess with compression, not sure how intricate I can do it tho

You’re most likely familiar with Qubiko, I’ve always wanted to know how he creates his drums. If you listen to his tracks his drums are extremely punchy. His track “mono tono”or “U R” is probably the best example

No right or wrong when it comes to production and mixing, however my mixing teacher taught us to use a slow attack and fast release for glue compression. In doing so, you don’t squash the transients of the sounds. Keeping it extremely punchy and cohesive sounding. Know as SSL bus comp cross eye.
