@@markant9534 YOu ask sensible questions, if I may say so, but they go to the heart of what 'acting' is and so are completely impossible to answer in a few lines. If you are an actor and want help with this issue then you could have a session with me (but dont leave messages about that here as they can get lost, please use my website - at the end of all the videos). The main thing I'd say is that acting is supposed to give the impression of the actor speaking himself, not of him saying somebody else's lines, and that what you refer to as 'presence' is basically a combination of confidence and personality of a person. I just had an acting class last night, my first ever actually, and we did an exercise where we had to speak based on what we saw in the room and react based on what we felt in our gut. Not much thinking, just reacting to the environment. I was so focused on trying to find something to speak about, that I was wayyyyy too in my head and it showed in my performance. Just goes to show that if you are only focused on the outcome or the action itself that you're doing (and not being in the moment) it will hinder your acting skills. Thanks for this video!

Congrats on being called in for the audition. @@billjoe8734 Well, if the audition is early then you need to rest, and think about some of the lines while falling asleep, perhaps. It's normal to be excited about an audition, but what matters is that you have a simple understanding of what the lines mean. "Leave me alone" may really mean "Look, I'm tired", and "Come in and chat" may mean " you look cold out there". In other words, some lines may be easier than you think. John

Totally agree the best kind of acting is really understanding your role and bringing your character to life. The mean word is 'being' being in the moment and characters shoes feeling their emotions and outcome you want in a scene then it becomes more realistic when you be real instead of acting, over acting really breaks you from your character and then it starts to become unnatural.

I've never professionally acted before and if you'd be kind enough to look into that, you'd find that there is no official message on casting for season 2. So, what I'm now resorting to, as a last minute resort, is messaging the casting directors directly. Now, I have NO idea if this is going to work, but I honestly don't know what to include in my self tape. This character is a rebel and a leader, and she's also (rarely) compassionate. I am struggling to find any way of portraying the character through just, talking..? I don't know how to nail this audition. The answer is for you to do as much acting as you can, maybe in the film dept. at the college, and spend time with anyone else you meet you is into acting, to learn their plans and, well, DO it, not talk about it. The sooner you start the more chance you have of success, and if you get an audition on Backstage.com by asking for work in your area then find a coach near where you live, online, or come to me through my website. But my main pint is to DO things. The director of a silly university film may end up employing you and a silly commercial you get online may get you an agent. John.

This is my new favorite video. The first half is a fucking satire/parody, no doubt. "You can't just pretend to be surprised... you have to BE surprised! If you pretend people will see you pretending and think your character is pretending." It starts to make sense later. "Don't pretend to look for something. Actually look. Look for a bit of ash on the carpet, possibly left by the stage manager." I think everyone is a different type of actor. I'm not. But I don't think anybody can explain it properly, like any creative field. Half the battle is learning to speak in your own voice.

***** there's a korean pop star named Jackson Wang and a while back he had to do a small acting role in something. Recently he was talking about how prior to doing the role he saw a KZbin video of a guy teaching about acting. He didn't say the specific video name but based on how he described it, it kind of seems like it could have been this one.

You raised a good point - it's difficult to play a role which just doesn't fit. For example, someone of my demographic would never say "I'm surprised to see you". So trying to naturally say that line is already an issue :')

Thanks for your thought . Of course we have to get past the anger and do whatever we do ourselves much better, and make sure we follow actors who are generally reliable! Anyway best wishes, John (www.Windsor-Cunningham.com).

Im 16 and have acted since i was 9. I sometimes will "fake act" because I feel almost like im "being judged" if I real act. How do I get out of that mindset?
@NewYorkActingCoach2 ай бұрын
Sorry, it's not easy to answer you because I don't know you, and don't know whether you're talking about not feeling 'real' in normal life, or in doing shows as an actor sometimes. But it sounds as if you KNOW when you are being truthful, and this truth, this feeling of being honest and open, is what life is about, and being fake is to be avoided when possible. Sorry, I said I didn't have much of ana answer. Just keep on the path of honesty when possible, and work hard, that's all I know ! J.

I’m late here, but in terms of acting I think I could. The only problem I find very difficult is memorizing lines. The technique I use is to repeat a lines several times for at east 15 mins and then I move on to the next. After that I say the two lines together several times and it’s time consuming. Is there any easier way.
@NewYorkActingCoach6 жыл бұрын
Yes, all you're doing is 'repeating' lines and there's no real reason to remember them that way, what you need to do is understand the lines in the way that actors do, which is what psychoanalysts do when trying to understand a patient, and detectives do when trying to work out what a criminal's words really mean. You have to study acting. If you want to try a session with me dont use this site as I miss most messages here but get in touch through the 'contact' page on my website (www.Windsor-Cunningham.com) or my direct email jwcactor@yahoo.com but it is a very serious and difficult business which you need to spend a huge amount of time studying i order to have even a chance of getting anywhere. Unless you're very, very lucky! John

I am at the beginning of my acting career and I face great difficulty standing in front of a large number of people. What exercises do I follow to get rid of severe tension?
@NewYorkActingCoach23 күн бұрын
First you have to practice it, so you get used to it. You need to get to the point where the audience (or the camera when you're filming - is not in your mind. Secondly your mind needs to be full of what the lines are really about, or this change will not happen. A line of "Hello" may already really mean "I'm tired", and a line like "I'm getting angry" may be a joke. You need to study your lines for hours and hours, or you're not an actor, you're just repeating some words ! John
@ishorya23 күн бұрын
@NewYorkActingCoach I understand you, but I find it difficult to convince my mind of this. Some people said that there are exercises that professional actors follow at the beginning of their careers so that they do not focus on the audience. It is called emotional balance, if I may say so. I hope you explain it to me because I have searched a lot. I did not find it on the Internet
@NewYorkActingCoach22 күн бұрын
Well there are lots of people with unusual ideas of how to 'open actors up' and the technique you describe is unknown to me. IT may be brilliant I simply don't know. All I do now is that experience DOING it, playing parts - in ANY small theatre company or small film - is essential. John
