@worldserpent731
@worldserpent731 2 жыл бұрын
Well you should know a lot of what she has said is completely wrong. Norse Mythology predates the accidental founding of Iceland by Vikings by at least 130 years or longer. Iceland wasn't founded until 830, and Norse Mythology's creation happened around 5th century to 7th century. It was based on Germanic teachings of mythology from Greek/Roman Mythology and even Irish mythology.

Oh we could go on all day with this. I’m Irish and a bunch of our cities are named for Scandinavian words. Even Dublin comes from black water - so ignore this nonsense and enjoy learning to pronounce the words and names however suits you. The Icelandic texts are probably the oldest ones surviving so if you like the words Icelandic by all means enjoy them that way.
@thethespian12

I came here specifically to comment the same. Would love to hear more mythical pronunciations, especially the nine realms. Considering Icelandic is the language most etymologically similar to old Norse, I’d say it’s the best option we have at pronunciation.

I am very proud of the people who brought those words to English they did a very good job of simulating the sound as closely as possible with the sounds of a lovable in the English language. Loki- Same as modern English "LOW-key" Þórr- Almost identical to modern English except for an alveolar tap instead of an r. Sort of like a rolled r that only lasts a single trill. Frigg- Sort of pronounced like "Freeg", again with an alveolar tap instead of an r Mjölnir- Mee-l-NIR Also with an alveolar tap.

Probably important to mention that Norse Mythology is a north germanic thing, and these gods were worshipped over a long periode of time, from even todays modern Germany to as far up as Finland. So, icelandic derrives from Old West Norse (dialect of ON) because that was the dialect of Old Norse spoken in the area of modern Norway and northern parts of Sweden. Todays modern north Germany, Denmark and todays modern south of Sweden did speak the Old East Norse dialect. So, what Im trying to say is that you can be pretty sure that the pronounciation has been different depending on where you were in Scandinavia at that time. Im pretty sure that in the Old East Norse dialect it was pronounced Mjólner/Mjølner, Loke, and Heimdalr. The -ur ending in words fx Heimdallur is a specific icelandic spelling and pronounciation.

Danish Viking -- You certainly make an insightful and valid point. I am willing to grant Ms. Hrafna the poetic license if only from her understandable national pride and heritage. It must be noted that these English pronunciations will fall most peculiar on the Icelandic (or other Scandinavian) ear and that is the basis for the humorous take inspiring the video. The texts from Iceland represent a rightfully important example as so many Norse texts were destroyed by the Christian clergy during conquests in Scandinavia and Norse communities across continental Europe -- as such they are linguistically and historically important. However, you are correct that they also derive from a branch of the Norse language family and should not be considered representative of the core as relates to how these mythological names were definitively spoken for millennia and predate the written languages of or adopted by the Norse peoples -- which are more diverse that the average American could likely imagine. It is a beautiful aspect of Indo-European languages how words are adopted, merged, and preserved from constituent languages as peoples migrated, conquered, and also integrated with one another across our known history of language and cultural geography. One can find as much influence from Old Norse in English as one can the Western Germanic language family when one looks. The Icelandic language is beautiful and rich as the natural beauty found in Iceland, but Icelandic is no more the definitive representation of Norse language pronunciation than modern British (or American) English is the definitive pronunciation representative of the Old English or Middle English languages. Similarly, you are spot-on with pointing out the differences one encounters in pronunciation in the more eastern branches of the Old Norse language tree. This in no way diminishes the humor observed when English, American, and Australian actors battle with pronouncing these iconic names from the Norse Mythos as it surely makes for a funny video!

@@cultosaur262 I love what you both are saying, and maybe I missed the part where you both pointed this out, but one thing I've notice in English that is different from when I speak German or Russian, is that when you pronounce loan words in English, there is a tendency to turn the word into a more English sounding word. It is not normal to pronounce croissant (for instance) by a French phonetic system, it is instead pronounce by the English one. The same with Thor, Sputnik, Mach, Smorgasbord, Curry, Pajamas etc. But in other languages you tend to pronounce loan words by the phonetic system from which they derive (i.e. McDonald's, Computer, Notebook etc.) I don't think it's because English speakers "don't know how to pronounce words" it's because English actually has a different phonetic system for loan words than other languages.

@@margretheilagadis_9753 "It's the original, correct way".. no, not really. Why not? Because as Danish Viking points out: there were two different dialects of Old Norse spoken. There is no "this is the ONLY correct way to pronounce ......, and all others are wrong." Just because Snorri happened to be an Icelandic scholar, doesn't mean THAT is how everyone pronounced it. Even in the 13th century (when Snorri wrote the Prose Edda) the language had begun to change, modernized, due to Christianity taking over and latin being taught to those of "higher class" (like Snorri). Saying "It was an Icelander who wrote it, so that's how it was spoken. Period." is just a bit... childish?
@cultosaur262
@cultosaur262 5 жыл бұрын
@@margretheilagadis_9753 - Sorry you are mistaken to claim the mythology is original to Iceland. Yes these literary works are known to be Icelandic. The mythology predates human migration to Iceland however. Icelandic is not the root of the Norse language family, rather it is a rather isolated, more modern branch. The deities from the mythology did not originate on Iceland or have their origin from the Icelandic people or their language. This does not diminish in any degree the massive contribution of the knowledge of these myths that have been preserved via Iceland. What Danish Viking points out is that Icelandic should not be considered as representative of how the names of these deities and artifacts would be pronounced when these beliefs were widely practiced across much of Northern Europe. This does not make them wrong, it rather makes them Icelandic. One should expect variance in pronunciation as one moves across different languages in the Norse language tree, and this is central Danish Viking's observation. If one wants to explore the 'original' pronunciations, one needs to linguistically move further back in time before Icelandic, Swedish, or Danish was in existence as we know them. Likely this would take us to a time predating Old Norse itself, however it would a good starting place. I suspect we would find these mythological names have Proto-Norse linguistic origin and pronunciation that is best left to forensic linguists to discuss how these may or may not be preserved in modern languages. Ms. Hrafna in her video indicated that the texts have Icelandic origin, not the names themselves. The contrast is in comparing Scandinavian pronunciation with the Anglicized versions found in Modern English, in this case using Icelandic. The validity and humor of this contrast would be preserved even if a different pronunciation were illustrated from an alternate modern language from the Norse family. I respect your opinion, however it is not definitive as you suggest nor does it invalidate the linguistic observation made by Danish Viking.

@@cultosaur262 "The texts from Iceland represent a rightfully important example as so many Norse texts were destroyed by the Christian clergy during conquests in Scandinavia and Norse communities across continental Europe." I just wanted to pull that line out, the rest of your post was really well written indeed, but that line... I just wanted to point out something there. 1. There weren't that many Norse texts that was destroyed at all, simply because the Norsemen didn't write books. Tales of the Gods, tales of heroes and songs were all orally taught from old to young. It was the Skálds who travelled from town to town who shared all that knowledge. 2. It was actually a Christian scholar, (you might have heard of him.. I've been studying norse mythology for a little under a year and it's really interesting! The names are closest pronounced in Icelandic due to the fact that the texts are originated from there but the belief itself was from Scandinavia and some parts of Germany (which is why it's also called Germanic mythology). Old Norse is an entirely other language from Icelandic but it's really close and amazes me on how close they are. I'm trying to learn the ancient language of Old Norse so maybe I should learn some Icelandic as well as it could help me! I think it woul dbe really cool:) great job!! Really love this:)

Fun fact: old Norse and old English are very similar in the sounds used. This is because there was a lot of Norse colonization back in the 800’s and 900’s all the way up to 1066. Once you hit that year for some reason there is a ton of French that gets injected into English and pronunciation of words starts to change very rapidly. By the late 1400’s English pronunciation becomes close enough to modern English that you can start to understand it as a native English speaker.

Also, to my understanding Icelandic is the closest language to what Old Norse was, which is the root for all scandinavian languages. It was isolated from foreign influences for a long time. 1. Old Norse - the language the eddas are written in is quite similar but still different from Icelandic and therefore pronounced differently. 2. Old and middle English is also quite similar to old Norse, they called Odin Woden and likely had different variations of the myths about him than the eddas. To addres the thumbnail: When the English started using the Latin alphabet instead of runes they struggled with how to write ð and first wrote it like y (why some old pubs are named "ye red duck" etc.) But only later used th to write the ð sound so we now write the and not ye.

@Maggie Grace Webb, multilinguist here. I don’t roll my r’s when I’m speaking languages that don’t require any r-rolling. Now, if I’m speaking Spanish, Scandinavian, certain dialects of Italian, or other languages that have words where you roll the r’s, then I will do so. Typically, I will also adopt the accent of the region that the language or dialect is from. For English, it’s a British accent (either a posh London accent, like some of the queens, or a Wales accent). For American, I’ll adopt a either a mild East Coast US accent (probably accurately described as a Long Island/South Pennsylvania/Boston combination) or a very mild New Orleans accent. Hispanic accents are different, and most are beautiful. For them I’ll adopt a Puerto Rican accent, a Dominican Republic accent, or a Mexican accent. Mexico is full of rich history with Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, and Toltec (I also believe there was a 5th civilization) ancient cultures mixed with Spanish culture. I have a deep regard for their combined history and their accents are very distinct. Might I ask what made your learning experience so horrible?

@@araelsongheart6918 That's neat! I haven't really had the opportunity to fully learn other languages like that. However, being in choir through all of high school and planning to pursue a career as a choir teacher, I've been exposed to quite a few languages. I'd say my best languages to sing/pronounce are French and Italian, because my voice has a brighter tone, while German and the like are more difficult due to their darker, deeper intonations. My two years of Spanish class were pretty bad just because they were high school classes, and high school language classes have a tendency to have students that don't care at all about the class. They're just there to pass the class and leave (because in my state, you are required to take 2 years of foreign language classes in order to graduaute. They also offered French, German, and American Sign Language, but I chose to take Spanish because it made the most sense for communication in my region). Also, my teachers were not very good. I got 100s in those classes, but that's only because the majority of our grade came from easy worksheets that didn't teach us anything. I didn't retain much from those classes haha.

I expected them to be wildly different, but in the end I'd say the difference is little, I do understand the frustration for a native speaker, but for me it's not a big deal... By the way, I LOVE your name "Hrafna" It just sounds so cool...

@@slytherine373 Is she ignorant since she is mispronouncing English words? Its funny how people claim its ignorant to mispronounce words from other languages when people will mispronounce english so much its common-place. And I say that as someone multilingual who constantly has to deal with idiots from both sides of the language thinking they are better than the other.
