You can purchase a pkg of dried beans or peas in the organic or regular grocery and soak/plant them. They germinate and produce. You can use tree limbs and construct pea teepees from them. I used an old cattle water trough and converted it to a blueberry bed. I bought mustard seeds in the spice isle and they germinate/produced. I am going to try poppy seeds next.

Some good money saving and beginning gardener tips here, Sage! As an experienced gardener, I think you do a great job speaking to your generation who may not have a continuous relationship with a gardener and the soil. It feels like you are speaking to a friend who asked you to teach them a garden, but is strapped for money, but might have a bit of soil. Good job!

Last year I got an average of 25 large cucumbers off of each of my two cucumber vines, and I barely watered. Those cucumbers are $1.49 each in my area (not far from you). This year, I planted 45 cucumber plants. I can't wait for harvest time.

Hi, Sage ‘Perfect is the enemy of good enough’. I’m stealing that. I remember pricing bell peppers at a grocery store. Greens were a certain price and the yellow and red ones were a dollar more. Crazy. Thanks, Sage.

I basically did everything you said not to 🤣 It's an investment into my family's future, though, so I'm not worried. I'm a first year gardener, in an apartment with no yard or allotment/community plot access and I spent way too much on seeds, invested in a full seed starting set up, and purchased what might actually be a ridiculous amount of containers, soil and nutrients/amendments. The joy I felt when sifting my soil mix for the seeds has made it all worth it so far and even more so if I can harvest some purple, black and brown bell peppers; black and almost tye-dye tomatoes; purple scallions; purple bok choy; fully red and red speckled romaine; and PINK BLUEBERRIES! (I'm so excited for that last one🤣) The most valuable things I've learned so far are 1: seeds want to grow and 2: just start with no worry about everything being perfect

New gardener and I can’t even get cauliflower seeds to grow well. Even under grow lights they are so scrawny and leggy. Will try to direct sow later but I understand the frustration with brassicas….trying a variety of herbs and veg. Love your content. Thanks! 😊

Saving seed is undoubtedly a great way to save money in future gardens. But because it requires preparation from the previous season, it doesn't help those who are looking to start a garden to save money right now which was my goal. There are also multiple intricacies to saving seed that require delving into the differences of multiple plants types, hybrid vs open pollinated, annual vs biennial vs perennial, etc. That would need to be (and hopefully will be) its own dedicated video.
