1. I took enjoy watching Ponyo scream "Ham!" I don't even eat ham, but it brings me endless joy. 2. I actually never tell anyone about my solo play. I speak for ages about my group RPG games, but my solo games are just for me. It almost feels like living a double life sometimes. Like a great fun secret. 3. I would highly suggest mixing and matching games. I really enjoy playing the spy game Number Stations, and I use the journaling game One Day at A Thyme for the "down time" sections. I love playing a spy that has to still live a mundane life between missions. I even added my own mechanics to downtime increase the chance of an NPC catching on to my double life. For some that might seem like too much work, and I totally get that. But there is nothing wrong with mixing and matching mechanics and themes to make a gaming experience all your own.

It can also be "Daydreaming with Dice"; "LARPing in Your Living Room"; "Battle Story Solitaire with Playing Cards"; "ARGs in Your Head"; "The Zen Art of Dungeoncrafting". Great video! Dedicated Solo RPG type. One of the things I look for in a solo system is, is it “craftable” can I make cards, extra tables. Selecting just the right oracles and NPC creation tools for the game. Putting it all together in a 3ring, properly indexed. Then thinking about the proper way to journal this game. Some games are very light others more intense. Each has a place, time and mood for me. Interesting that you mentioned Jung. I have a set of character archetypes in my head I use in almost every game. The concept works, even for games like Mausritter! The hardest thing is to get over performative journaling. I have horrible handwriting and can barely draw a stick person. I used to get so intimidated by those beautiful ones. Now I just find images online and paste them in and try my best at writing legible. Right now I am prepping a new game, Apothecaria. Very low combat game about being a village witch/herbalist. Combining it with the Iron Valley oracles. Creating affliction cards and reagent tables. No need to pull out my standees.(can’t paint figures😢).
@amanisalone8 ай бұрын
I think about coming up with a guide for solo journaling, but it really does change depending on the game and the player. That said, I think it would be a good thing to write a book on to explore the different ways to think about it/approach it/come up with a way that works for each person. Sometimes for example the way I journal to avoid performative journaling is to record it as if I'm a reporter watching my PC.

Great video and better intro! I played regular rpg with a group from 1995 until 2007, give or take. Then had a massive stop because life happens and we could not meet any longer. I had a longing for it, so 2 years ago and after lots of research, I bought Vaesen. And completely failed to form a new playing group. I have been solo rpging for 3 months now, starting my third adventure. I felt rusty at the begining, after all the years of not playing, and being a first time solo player, but things started to get smooth, and now I have a blast. My best advice is: follow your gut, and enjoy. Just follow your gut.
@amanisalone3 ай бұрын
Bingo - if anything solo play is an exercise in trusting your instincts about what you feel is right and wrong. So many things now are designed to pull you away from your instincts and toward impulse and indulgence, so much so that our internal compass becomes extremely messed up. Every time I try to "force" the story into one direction with solo play, it just gets overcomplicated and stressful. I know when I'm following my gut because I don't feel stressed

Nice video bud :-) I`ve actually been role playing and wargaming solo since about 1974. Played with others (clubs, groups, friends, family, etc) but my solo games have existed most of my life (I was actually playing solo long before D&D, back in the days of Chainmail). I guess at this stage, I probably have at least 10000 pages of notes, background fluff, self published novels, and short stories. So playing a single on going campaign solo in this way is extremely rewarding... and your words about self critisizing is soooo true. Its took me twenty years to overcome this and find my personal hobby grail. Also, I totally agree about tech... apart from my computer (which I use to communicate with others), I have never and will never use phone aps, tablet aps, or any of that stuff... I still like the good old fashioned hands on at the table approach :-)

this actually rules because "solo rpg" games seem relatively recent as a distinct phenomenon (or at least marketed as such), and I think it's awesome to know there were people out there doing the damn thing on their own without anyone's permission. In the end, it's the story we write to ourselves that's the only book that matters

I remember what drove me to learn that I can like a solo game was spite... It was a board game, but still. So, I wanted to play a board game but my family said, "No, we're too busy," as they scrolled on their phones. So I joked that I would play alone, then. And my father made a comment so dripping with sarcasm and hostility that I was convinced I needed to do it to prove him wrong. So, I got out a game that I knew had solo rules. I set it up... And I started playing. At first, I was embarrassed and I felt really dumb as my father looked on. Then he asked if I felt silly and was ready to quit... That's when I was filled with resolve to keep playing... And I had fun. I legitimately had fun sitting down, drawing cards, rolling dice, and just playing the game without anyone to banter with or compete against (given it was a cooperative boardgame so the competition element wasn't there to begin with). I was excited for every narrow defeat of an enemy, distraught as the ogre threw my character against a wall, and in the end of the 2nd scenario I traversed the cavern, slew the assassin and claimed the crown for my Rogue companion a single turn before I would have died to stale air. I know that sounds like an RPG, but it was just a D&D themed board game. But I think it was because this was a D&D boardgame, that I started me down the path of wanting to solo role-play. I love ttrpgs... A specific ttrpg that I have found quite a few others do not like. So, if I have a group it will invariably be Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition... Which I resent. But despite it solving so many problems... I can't take the leap; I know I could have fun, I know it would give me a creative outlet which I have been grasping for, I know it would let me play my favorite RPG again... I know all of this, but I can't make myself do it.

oh, man. it took me a couple of sessions with different games (rpgs and board games) to figure out what I actually prefer in my solo games. and now I created a nice sandbox style rpg in space that fits me perfectly. I think it’s very important to look for different systems and mechanics because you never know what you’ll enjoy the most. sometimes you can find a neat mechanic and just use that mechanic only. I think my main advice to anyone trying to start a solo rpg is to find something very simple at first, like micro chap rpg for example. and after playing a one session (without even finishing it) you can try to figure out if you actually enjoyed the process or not, and if not then why? is the system isn’t deep enough? is there not enough narrative elements? is it just not that fun to play solo for you? and from that you can then easily pin point what to do next and how to improve the experience or just drop the idea all together :)

Recently, I've been playing with the Gamemasters Apprentice cards and the solo rpg ALONe that the cards designer created for the cards. I originally got them to use as a GM, but found It's a really great option for those that find rolling on all the tables too time consuming. The cards have all the tables and then some that you would get in say mythic. Coming up with random events and using the oracle are so fast! I like how freeform the ALONe rules are too. Its great for when you just wanna get in there and play and dont have the time for set up.

You talking about the common posts on the message board cracked me up. I do some work on a Facebook group for tourists, and it's clear 99% of people don't bother to look at the page at all before posting. Every other post is "what hotel should I stay at?" Then "is this place safe?" And then "where should I eat?" If they just looked at the board for 30 seconds they'd have dozens of answers without having to ask again. Plus, most of the questions are answered in some pinned stuff. But folks don't check. Don't even get me going on the "would I like X?" questions, which are off topic, but also infuriating. I just got that pack of cardboard minis. They should be handy. I am NOT getting back into painting (collecting) miniatures. This is a handy video. I've dabbled in solo gaming, but I have so little focus and so many things distracting me. I have the same problem with reading, but with reading I can take the bus or the train somewhere and it gives me time to focus on the book. With solo-RPGing, I need to make myself sit down at a table and do something, which isn't my strong suit. Putting my bullshit away is definitely a good idea and something to work on. I have a similar opinion of Four Against Darkness. I used it to help me make dungeons during Dungeon 23, but as far as actually playing it, it feels too dry and procedural. My most successful and rewarding game so far has been Thousand Year Old Vampire. I think I lean toward the journaling side of things, which I guess makes sense as I'm a writer.

What you were saying about memorialising your play really struck me. In a group tabletop game, things like a quest log have a shared life between players and sessions. The moment-to-moment of a solo game, be it digital, analogue, or otherwise, can easily be lost without much to look back on. That may not be a concern for many as long as they're having fun in the moment, but I hate the idea that I had an adventure that I knew I was loving while playing has been lost for good, with only a surface level recollection of what happened in my brain. You've given me something to think about with the remainder of my journal for the coming year. Great video - subscribed! 💜

After watching your videos, I rolled up a character in Dragonbane and ventured off to the abandoned chapel to meet with Ingolfr. Dragonbane does solo really well. The tools they provided with the box were really a pleasant surprise, because they provide an excellent framework for generative roleplaying and emergent narrative. Also, the art is rad AF. Anyway, thank you for making these. I really was inspired to make it happen. I have to ask: is Colostle as fantastic as it is aesthetically pleasing?
@amanisalone8 ай бұрын
This is awesome to hear - the tools are so simple but they are actually *exactly* what is needed to just get in there and start doing it. If I were to say a downside to Starforged it's that for some people it just seems a bit too "big" to start playing. I would say colostle is a cool game with a well-thought out world, if you're someone who digs mechanics it's a bit mechanics lite. But if your focus is on the story and immersion, and you like the world created by nich angell, then you're going to love it. Try to get the roomlands supplement, it really fills in a lot of the missing pieces from the core game.

But then I remembered that he doesn't know how to write - he keeps an elaborate ART journal. But I'm not great at art and I figured he could have learned to keep notes as an apprentice but now I was getting really stuck in the weeds and felt like I needed to practice sketching AND handwriting in order to make my solorpg entries beautiful. Hello Man Alone- Intro was great - middle information exceptional!!! - outro Meh??? I'm one of the newbies here just getting into Solo RPG - but not a newbie for playing RPG's. The Solo RPG that I'm looking for is the Solo RPG for purchased adventures. Sure you can play a Solo RPG and make up everything, but the thing I'm going up against that no one seems to know how to answer is the playing of those purchased adventures. Like in D&D B2 Keep on the Borderlands - how do you solo and adventure with the cleric, when you know that the cleric is going to turn on you later. Like in any adventure - how do you solo when this or that is going to happen and you have to play around it. I have done a lot of reading up on this, so maybe just jump in and do something - it could end up being a lot different than what I expected. Or if no one seems to know, then maybe I should just make up what works for me. Sorry to disagree with your amazing Spirited Away, but I gave Spirited Away 5 Z's ZZZZZ I think the 5 Z's were mostly based on the fact that I didn't know the world and I'm not really into animes. I look forward to your other videos - hopefully some of them can shed some more light so I can see where to go better. Cheers

I was doing some research and looked up what it could be and I was stunned. It was a type of morning star flail that was used by priests and had a heavy war use version. That was my go to weapon every game after that and I eventually was able to crush the scenarios, literally. It seems silly, but give it a try! You'd be surprised!

Man, this Video motivates me so much. I have just started to play 5 parsecs from home, i read a lot about that game and watched every video. Now i have this game and i played 6 rounds and it is great, but every time bevor i start a game i have to fight against my inner demon who sais:"watch videos, play computer, hang with friends, do everything but dont play this game alone". Greetings from Germany

Nice job. Im just coming back to RPG Onanism. Way back when the oceans were clean, I found one single module for AD&D 1e (yeah that long ago) I played it over and over. Otherwise my only solo play was building assets for myself as a dungeon master. Recently I was playing one deck dungeon and I was thinking "yanno, I bet the smart kids out there have better ways to play RPGs by myself" I didnt do much for research. Watched a couple vids. "Oh that looks cool. lets get the pdf" The rules: 1. Never "Yuk" someone else's "Yum. I might try journaling but I am pretty certain I will hate it. But thats me. the operative "I" 2. Solo means you dont have to lug your stuff to someone elses house. Or have a bunch of weirdos in yours. 3. Solo means no arguments. 4. Solo means there are no "RPG Police" to come tell me I'm doing it "wrong" And hell yes to a space. I have a truck camper. Last weekend I was out in the woods. no cell signal. I couldnt even send a text. It was raining like hell. and I tried Four Against Darkness for the first time. sitting at the table in my camper. rain pelting on the roof. a glass of hooch. and Im killing goblins and taking their shit. Sometimes its nice to just do it simple: kick in the temple door, kill everything, giggle at the statue's bare butt; and murderhobo your way on out. I like my RPGs to stay crunchy in milk; to be swingy and weird. screw the critic, and the editor too. They can shut up; the dice are talkin' man.

I got into this in late 2019…something must have happened in 2020, but now they are suddenly SOOOOO MANY rpgs that are made just for solo.

I just started solo because I learned how to play dnd for my kids and now nobody wants to try it even though they asked me to teach them how to do it in the first place. I played the death knight squire twice because I enjoyed it so much.

The bucket is a great weapon!! Blessed by a cleric so all water placed in it is potent against undead!! It's not the bucket though that's blessed, the rope is the religious artefact

For me, solo RPGs as a concept was not advertised/explained very clearly, as someone who has not played one. I think for many people like myself, “not getting it” just comes down to not understanding how it works and actually plays out. Because they’re pretty much advertised the same as ttrpgs for groups, when they are very different Without doing research online and finding some actual play videos showing what it’s actually like, it would’ve been harder for me to get my mind around the concept. Viewing it more like prompted journaling/writing and guided imagination, with some mini games - the idea of a solo rpg makes a lot more sense that way. So I appreciate those explanations. That’s very different from the kinds of ttrpgs that I’m used to playing, D&D and Cyberpunk, which have a lot of rules and mechanics, and rely on group story telling, and accomplishing very specific objectives. And which have spend the vast majority of the rule books on how to facilitate combat in great detail. I am very intrigued by the idea of something more free form and abstract, and not so focused on very mechanical combat. And I too have never been able to bring myself to just journal normally, having an rpg and lore to let my imagination run loose in and write about without haven’t to start from scratch sounds really nice. I have a copy of Colostle, which was the first solo rpg I had ever heard of. I picked it up immediately because of how cool the setting and art is. I kickstarted another one called Astroprisma. And my copy of Koriko a Magical Year also just came in the mail from its kickstarter. I’m so curious to start playing Koriko that I was online last night looking for what pen, ink, and notebook I want to get just for that. So I totally agree on your point about “stuff” being a big inspiration for RPGs. Whenever I have a new character I’m going to play in D&D, or a campaign I’m starting, I always get special dice to match and stuff like that. Anyway, I appreciate the explanations in this video. I’m looking forward to beginning to explore solo RPGs

Oh it's not just me who doesn't want to do math for 95% of the game?? Wow! I just got into solo. With my schedule getting together, even online with a group is crazy hard. And I am someone who likes the alone time. Didn't know solo was a thing till a few weeks ago. Now it's trying to figure out what style I like, what works for me. Trying to spend at little as possible right now so that's making it interesting lol I love stuff just think my husband might lose his crap lol

Something in this video made me laugh, but my ADHD brain already forgot it. But just so you know... that one part was funny. Thanks for the tips! I'm just starting my solo RPG journey. Played Plunderlust and Solus: Lost already...and although those are more guided visually, they were a good intro for me to get into the headspace. I found a dude on eBay selling a huge lot of Mork Borg stuff... won that auction... and now I'm plowing through a bunch of videos to prepare myself for that adventure. Onward and upward. 🤙🏻

Active imagination has been one of the core drivers for my interest in solo rpg. I even made a ttrpg based on Jung’s cognitive functions. I’ve had some great revelations.
