I've been using the notch for more than 20 years when using it you just use it on its own by pulling it its not recommended to use the blade I've been using this for taking the wireing from car speaker🔈🔉🔊 wire and I've got to say it's a fantastic little tool for getting into a small space still use it to this day it's a outstanding little tool and very easy to sharpen thanks for sharing this video

I found the standard notch will not strip automotive wire very well which is what I intend to use it for. Using Felix’s method I am now able to strip automotive and household electrical wire. It all depends on how it is intended to be used.

That is an excellent demonstration. Though it is very limited on functionality. I think the maximum American Wire Gauge that would fit would be 16 AWG. Most electricians will be working with 14 AWG to 10 AWG. While this would work fine on data cable wire, it will obviously not be effective on anything bigger. I have not yet seen Felix’s video, but I’m very interested to see how he modified the wire stripper. Thank you for this informative video.

Electrician here. I can confirm that you can strip that type of wire by pinching your two fingernails together on it and pulling. The better test would be to try it on some 1.5mm² or 2.5mm² t&e or single insulated cable. I might give it a go when i have some spare time (and material) and get back to you.

Just want to confirm i managed to strip some 1mm² flex insulation for a lighting circuit using this method. You want to make sure you have a fair bit of slack to strip and trim it down after with the scissors as it requires bending it over the loop and using a lot of force to strip. Definitely a last resort but worked pretty well

This subject is not as simple as most lay people think it is. Years of experience working with wire is needed to get an appreciation for what can be done with the stripping notch. This stripping notch design has been around for many many years. Insulation on flexible wire has been around for many years as well. Insulation on flexible electric wire has evolved a great deal over those many many years. Some of the insulation types such as THHN and THHW , are used in industry because it is very thin and tough and oil resistant and heat resistant and for that reason, many conductors can be fit into a given diameter of conduit. Those types of insulation are a b*tch to strip with a pair of dedicated strippers, much less a SAK. I know because I have over 42 years of experience with industrial wiring. House wiring doesn't have the same requirement, because it isn't usually pulled into conduit, or at least, few wires are pulled into a conduit. Automotive wire is insulated differently from the other two types. The point is that there are many types of insulation and they have evolved over many years, but the SAK wire stripper has not. Way, way, way back in the day when the SAK stripper was introduced, electrical conductors had soft rubber as the insulation. If you buy bulk rubber cord to make your own extension cords you will see what I mean because it is still double insulated with soft rubber. The outer shell may be a little tougher, but it is still soft rubber and you will find that the inner strands use very soft rubber and if you have a tough thumbnail you can just pinch it and pull the rubber off. That is what made up the cords on home appliances for decades and I feel THAT is the wire that the SAK stripper was meant to be used on and it works great. The thin insulation on the bell wire that you used in your video should work equally well, mainly because it isn't very thick. You will HAVE to do the Felix Emmler mod to strip modern industrial and some house wiring insulating materials.

yeah, I was going to say, I'm not a tradesman but I've tried to strip wires with a leatherman or other tool and its been a disaster- actually I think I was trying to connect amplifier to speaker wires and I'm not quite sure what the technical problem was other than I was stripping the insulation and half the wires in the bargain.....I guess I was dealing with the first type of tough, resistant insulation? I'll have to re-watch Felix' video.......

The design appears to be for smaller gauge wire in tight locations which may have been the requirement for military specifications, the original use of these tools. Perhaps it is time for a Victorinox upgrade to suit the needs of tradesmen and the diy handyman.

I tried it before with about 12 Guage wire and it wouldn't work at all yes the wire fit in the notch just fine without forcing it at all the coating was to thick I again just tried about the same thickness wire you have there and for somthing that small with a coating that thin yes it did work but not that well and I'm using a new sak that I've never tried the wire stripper on .. the way that is best is to score the outer casing and then place the wire stripper onto the cut mark and pull ... No offence I've tried this many times I'm not biased so that's why I gave it one more shot and it failed .. I'm not trying to look poorly on your video as for wire that small it did kinda work! BUT I think for most the size of the wire will be closer to the size of the " wire stripper " if you could show this again with somthing like that ..it would be very interesting please let me know if you intend to or already have in another video also if ya score the wire casing you can strip a lager wire than rather than only stripping somthing the diameter of the casing ( again show us this with a larger casing that fills or comes close to filling the notch all of us victorinox fans would love to see that! )

about 1950~60(sorry for not clear my memory) bottle opener has "edge" so you can use that tool as "electrician's knife". your way to use that tool is smart, but not intended to.

Tbf the wire stripper is by far the most useless tool on any multitool, and if any tool is worth going to your toolbox to get the real thing or even head out to buy the real tool, its a wire stripper. Not only because its easier to use, but the chance you mangle your wires is much lower and you are pretty much guaranteed to get a good connection from a decent wire stripper. What makes me think its actually useless on a multitool though, is that multitools already have some form of blade on them. Electricians have been stripping wire with knives for 100 years and it does by far a better job than messing a round with a can opener like this

I believe that the Swiss army knife has a 90° edge on the wire stripper curve. You know how they put 90° angles on the spine of carbon steel to start fires? To strike Fire steel. I think that's all you need to strip a wire as small as that. However, I almost never mess with wire that small. That was almost like USB cable wire. I'd much rather do it like Felix did.

Hi, I’m an electrician and I got my first Victorinox knife with the wire stripper back in 1990 and we electricians are usually very observant but I was not observant enough to notice the sharp edge that you have pointed out so I’ll be having another look at it. I assume that you are not an electrician by your terminology, we call what you call “the covering” insulation but that was a good demonstration, well done.
