How to Add a Non-UniFi WiFi Router to Your UniFi Cloud Gateway Network

@@ApexOneTech Thank you. I already have three Unifi APs and a cloud key gen1. I want to replace the old cloud key with the cloud gateway ultra. My wifi/router (OTN) is strong. So can I place the gateway ultra in the chain as shown at 2:59? I want to avoid putting wifi/router into bridge mode, as the ISP has to handle that. So, I was thinking to connect the wifi/router directly into one of the LAN switchports (not the WAN port) on the cloud gateway. Your diagram seems to show this. Then I would configure a static IP address on the gateway in the same local IP address range, and turn off its DHCP, and leave DCHP ON at the wifi router. Hopefully, this would eliminate a double NAT issue. Make sense? Again, great video!

Thanks for this post! I was very curious about the limitations, whether I can still match the wifi clients with a unifi vlan and whatnot. This video gave me an idea of what I can and can't do once I'm able to get and install a UCG ultra.

Question, I want to add a couple Eero 6 Pro router/mesh to the Gateway ultra, should I put the EERO network in Bridge Mode before connecting to Unifi Gateway? Or should they be changed to AP mode? Both Eeros will be wired to network. I think in bridge mode they will still use their mesh technology, but If I put in AP mode, would the gateway be smart enough with the wireless handoffs like the mesh?

I’m not sure if it’s possible to add a wireless Eero mesh system to the gateway and still have it function properly. You can add one unit, I’m sure, but I don’t know about wirelessly meshing. I would think that Bridge mode would mean that the Eero router is at the top of the network diagram receiving the internet connection but you would actually want your UniFi gateway to do that. I would try AP mode. If that doesn’t work, I would try to sell it and get UniFi APs. I know that’s not what you’re asking for but the UniFi meshing APs will be great. All their APs can also connected wirelessly (mesh) instead of via Ethernet cable.

@ for anyone who wants to do the same. If you put eero into bridge mode it keeps the mesh technology and works great. You just don’t have all the options. But works great.

Want to get UCG-Ultra and want to put it behind Google Nest WiFi will IDS/IPS and Adblocking still work? Looking to eventually switch to UniFi but gonna start with the Gateway first

I’m not sure with Google Nest WiFi in particular if you can add it to a gateway like this, but in the setup I showed, all the traffic is going through the UniFi gateway so the UniFi’s intrusion detection will still work. Your UniFi router/gateway is your firewall.

@1:20 What if you had the Unifi WAN port going to the router and the LAN port going to a Unifi Switch, e.g. the Flex Mini. Would that work?

Question. What if your current router is at 192.168.1.1? Can I make the Cloud Gateway 192.168.1.2 during setup to avoid conflicts? Thje router will be put into AP mode

Your cloud gateway show be your DHCP server, that assigns the IP addresses it the devices connecting to the network. So I would set your new gateway to 192.168.1.1 or even something else like 192.168.10.1

Shouldn't matter if it plugs in to a RJ45
