How to add a skylight.

Today I am building a curb mount to install a Velux skylight on.

What about the 3 rafters you cut out doesn't that compromise the roof structure? I would think you need to double up the rafters on each side of the skylight. I getting ready to put a 2x2 curb mounted skylight in my tiny house and I want to do it right. Tell me what you think. Thank you

Three factors are needed here. Size and species of rafter wood, span, and snow load (what region of the country they are in). Only then will you know if those headered off rafters need to be doubled up. My guess is that they should have been doubled up.

I forgot to mention slope is a factor too. Find some span tables to calculate.

The curb is built like that just like window jams because it helps from pulling apart.

We make our own flashing kits like bosses my man. It's a Portland thing. We rarely run into deck mounted skylights up here.

Can you mount a fixed mount skylight in either direction? Or is there a specific top and bottom? Since neither side opens, is there a correction orientation?

Great question. I like the 8d ring shank nails as wl, but this crew looks the n19s. I think they like them because the gun shoots faster and less real-estate in the pouches.

My brother-in-law installed one of these curb mounted skylights DIY in the roof over the kitchen and, of course, everytime it rains it leaks onto the new hardwood floor they put in the kitchen. Bro should learn how to do flashing correctly. I wonder if he fixed that yet.

Measure width inside sill flashing, because it is slightly smaller than the curb cover.

At 3:08 you call a two by six a two by four. No carpenter would build a roof with that span using 2x4 studs. Also, you should have doubled the 2x6 rafters on each long run of the skylights. The only question I have is how did you attach the curbs to the decking? Toe-in with 8d? steel angle cleats? glue?
