Thank you! So easy! It just saved me an hour of typing brackets for 200 notes. Two points... 1. END NOTES: To add brackets to end notes instead of footnotes, the "replace with" string should be [^&e] instead of [^&f]. 2. SPACES BEFORE CITATION BRACKETS: A space between the last character of a sentence and the opening bracket of a citation number is a fairly standard convention for APA style, etc. To add a single space before the first bracket in the "replace with" string simply add the space before the bracket. So instead of "[^&e]" the replacement string would be " [^&e]".

Similarly, how do you remove the brackets for all endnotes at once? I know that to add brackets to endnotes, you do exactly what you did in this video, but use "^e" instead. But I don't know how to remove the brackets once added. e.g. at a later stage and not just clicking the undo button.

it is not your fault, it is Microsoft fault. the May update for Microsoft Office is responsible for this bug. Wail for new Microsoft update or uninstall you Office copy and reinstall it again but in the previous version not the latest one, or accept the current situation and continue working as long as you are in hurry for printing; if you are in hurry send the file to someone who doesn't have this problem. By the way the problem doesn't show if the footnote numbering is continuous, not restarted each page. Good luck

It should be clickable, unless your file is read only, or your copy of word is deactivated, or if you didn't type anything in "find what" box.

جزانا وإياكم no, sorry, you can't make it default format for footnotes actually it is not a format. Microsoft word doesn't support such format for footnotes but there are some work around, for example you can insert a footnote, put the number between 2 brackets or parentheses in both main text area and footnotes area, format it the way you like, and then assign an auto-text entry for it. it is quite different. if you brackets style is "footnote reference" do a search ctrl + H find what text: [ hit on "more" chose "format" and chose style = "footnote reference" replace All repeat for ] bracket.

to make sure that my method is working... insert a new footnote using shortcut key Alt + Ctrl + F then apply my instruction if word did the job for the new footnote only that means that the other footnotes in your document are not footnote!! they are just numbers. if word didn't do the job and showed you the message "all done. found 0 replacements" that means that there is something wrong in the replace operation you did.

Thanks a lot. When i insert a new footnote using Alt + Ctrl + F, it works. However i have actuall inserted endnotes (not footnotes) in my dissertation using the References tab, selecting Insert Endnote. So, naturally this is not working with endnotes of course, as to enter an endnote using the Keyboard short cut you have to type Alt + Ctrl + D. Maybe it would be very helpfull to make a video on how to insert brackets in endnote citations. Thanks again for your efforts. Keep up the excellent work!

وعليكم السلام والرحمة والإكرام يمكنك استخدام الإسناد الترافقي من قائمة إدراج insert > cross reference بحيث يشير إلى رقم الحاشية السفلية التي ترغبين في تكرار رقمها في المتن، ثم طبعاً تنسقيه بنفس تنسيق رقم الحاشية. هذا حقل يحتاج إلى تحديث عند تغير أرقام الحواشي، يمكنك تحديث كافة الحقول في المستند بتحديد الكل ثم F9
