Great tutorial! Psychedelic squirrels are never a wrong choice! ❤️🐿 Your advice to understitch the neckline is spot on. I love how neat and tidy the top of the zipper, self fabric, and lining all look. I personally have a really hard time getting the lining at the bottom of the zipper to lay right and line up all tidy. My solution is to sew the center back seam of the lining from the hem up to the bottom of the zipper before I attach it to the zipper. Then I do what you did to stitch it to the zipper tape.

Anastasia, thank Y💖U very much for this beautifully & fun essenced detailed guide. I really needed to see a quality review so I can start lining my own dresses. I’m sure you already know this & assume it’s a given, but for any newbie sewers; if could just make 1 suggestion that I learned that REALLY makes the difference for a finely tailored outcome. It is so important to get in the habit of PRESSING (not ironing back & forth) the seams after EACH time you sew them. For two reasons. 1.) It heals or closes back the holes made from the needle in the fabric. 2.) It leaves all your seams NICELY flat & smooth for a beautiful couture like finish. The result is a beautiful drape with no bulkiness or puckers.👗🪡🧵✨🎉💞🥰🎶 P.S. If your fabric is mid to high end buy 1/4 yrd of white organza fabric or pressing fabric & place it on top of your fabric, then press it. This ensures your beautiful fabric is not altered by the heat in any way (i.e. makes it shiney or dull.) Also, use the correct heat setting for that specific fabric. Thank you again & HAPPY SEWING✨💞✨

I'm making my first ever lined dress. Your video is just what I was looking for to help me with the process. I'm making up the pattern as I go along and have decided to add a contrast waistband between the bodice and skirt. When I do the lining, is it best to do exactly the same and add a waistband, or can I just extend the bodice to the same length it is with the waistband?

This is incredibly helpful! I have made lined dresses before, but I had a really hard time with the commercial pattern instructions around the zipper/outside fabric/lining fabric (I ended up hand-stitching the lining to the zipper tape, which actually worked fine, but was REALLY SLOW). THIS is awesome! Question: what are your thoughts on assembling the lining FIRST as sort of a "muslin" for a garment?
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. 💕 Why not assemble the self pattern pieces as your muslin sample ? I mean if the lining is the same sure but sometimes the lining is bigger so I wouldn’t suggest doing that for a test fit.

This tutorial is fabulous! So happy I found your channel and have subscribed. I do have a question/request. Could you please do a tutorial about lining fabrics? I have some gorgeous voiles and lightweight linens that I want to sew up but they need linings. Since they are 100% cotton, is it essential that I use 100% cotton lining? If I prewash/preshrink both fabrics, can I use an Imperial Batiste to line dresses made with translucent or sheer fabrics that are 100% natural fibers? I can find imperial batiste at a local shop but it is a poly/cotton blend. The only other thing that I have found nearby is the Symphony broadcloth at JoAnn which is also an appropriate weight but also poly/cotton blend.

Thanks for the helpful video! When you attach the neckline of the dress to the lining, you sew at a 1/4” seam allowance. So you basically lose a 1/4” at the neckline of your dress? Would you recommend adding a 1/4” to the neckline if you’re starting from a pattern vs. an existing dress? Thanks again!
@LaurenTakitch
@LaurenTakitch 6 ай бұрын
One more thing - how would you recommend sewing a lining in a dress with ruched sides? The pattern uses the side seam allowances for the channels of the ruching. I considered leaving the sides open prior to connecting the necklines, but then I end up with my fashion fabric on the inside of my garment. If I add the channels on both pieces separately first, then I need two sets of straps and the seams are bulky. I thought about using the inside of the lining/fashion fabric as the ruching channel, eliminating the need for the single fold. but I’m not sure how to do that cleanly. What’s the best option here? Any advice would be much appreciated!! Thanks again!

I have black sequin fabric I want to put over a bodysuit and skirt I have. Do you have any videos for that? Can I even do that?

Do you have an additional tutorial if the dress has a sleeve?
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia 4 ай бұрын
I don't but it is roughly the same process. Create 2 dresses and sew around the neck and then you will need to finish the bottom of your sleeves. I do have a video on replacing the lining in a jacket or making a fur jacket and I go over how to sew sleeve lining.

What if you want to add lining and/or pockets to a garment you didn’t make? (so you don’t have the pattern pieces for it)
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia 6 ай бұрын
@@kateisaacson4766 You can trace the pattern pieces out from the garment & make a pocket pattern of your choosing.

Does my dress need to be completely sewn with zipper in before I add lining? Or can I add lining at the same time?
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia Жыл бұрын
There are many different ways you can attach a lining. If you want it to be finished by the edge of the zipper how I did it then you will need to add an invisible zipper first. You can sew the lining to the dress 1st then treat the back like it is one piece of fabric and not two. The downside is that is you can see the seam in the inside. That way is a more fast fashion approach to it but hey they both work and there is a time and a place for all techniques. Thank you for watching.

What kind of fabric is best for lining?

Anything light weight. It could be thin cotton or a satin or a china silk or a rayon bamberg.

How does this work with a gathered pattern please.

Measure the gathered section by measuring the hem or if stretchy by stretching it out.

What if you have a premade dress with no pattern? It just needs a lining otherwise it's too flimsy.
@SewAnastasia
@SewAnastasia 5 ай бұрын
@@artboxfashion4042 You will need to travel out the pieces. It’s easier to wear a slip under it though. Maybe try sewing a slip?

How would this work with a pattern that used facings and sleeves. Would I replace the facings completely?

You can sew the lining to the facing. Basically remove the facing pattern from the lining but make sure you have seam allowance.
