How to Add NEW CHICKENS to Your Flock!

We got 4 new birds at the end of May. We put them into a quarantine pen for 3-4 weeks. We decided one morning to let them out to see how they'd do in the yard (3 acres) with our flock. Went well. Figured they'd go back to their original pen but all 4 followed the rest into the main coop that night. Really surprised me! I guess that temp pen let them get acquainted enough while kept apart still

Lime is the best thing to use for smell, lice , mites and it is not dangerous to your lungs ! its good for your garden too! we never had lice and mites on chickens when i was a kid . my dad lightly sprinkled it all over and in coop run, i have learned a great deal from your back yard education and i love you and chickens! i have just gotten a small flock of Bathams and love my silkies! i hope i can raise some chicks!

@@WelcometoChickenlandia so far there haven't been any injuries and I learned that my chickens (I have a big coop and only 2 "old" and two new chickens) don't fight inside the coop as long as I open the door early in the morning. Outside I kept them separated with a fence for a few days and now took a fence with bigger gaps between the pickets so that the small new chickens can get through but not the bigger ones so they have a save space. I make sure to offer them different places to eat and drink so that they don't fight

Thank you for your video, just got 3 new silkies to integrate with our flock with 1 silkie rooster, and silkie hen and a couple buffington hen, speckled hen, smaller bantam hen, Australian hens, and another hen. We separated them by keeping them in the coop (the size of a shed) in a large cage to walk around and their large carrier to go and out of and plenty of food and water. Later I’ll set up another cage outside to bring them outside to further integrate them into the flock. Keeping them in the coop for now so they familiarize it as their new home. This video helped a lot especially what to look for on the pecking order, and extra food and water, great idea. Will keep watching, we’re ready for spring and chicks and ducklings, new subscriber.

I've re-watched several of your videos tonight. I'm so excited and nervous. I have a mixed flock of four hens. They are two plus years old. One bossy hen, pretty sure she's a leghorn. Anyways, today we got 10 chicks. Two Brahma's, and 8 Buff Rocks. While I'm excited, I am also very nervous about the introduction to come. We have a large roomy, secure coop, 12x14. And will be working on a run for them. The current run isn't as secure as I'd like or big enough. Going to work on a salad bar as well. Fingers crossed Gwen behaves when the time comes 🤣 Maybe one of the Brahma's is a rooster that will chill her bossy ways right out. A Rooster 😳 another thing I'm nervous about 😂

I think I would still start with having them separate but able to see each other. The integration might be quicker since they are roosters but they are young and so won’t be as bold yet. I would do an integration just to be safe. 🐥🐥🐥

The one chick will have a difficult time integrating being that she is so young and that she’s a single chick. If you can find someone her age that you can integrate along with her (make sure to integrate them together first) that would be the easiest way. New chickens need to be either the same size or adult age before integrating them with an established flock.

Awesome channel. My neighbor just gave us 4 little inside chicks and 2 bigger (outside chicks) I have zero knowledge on chicks and chickens aside from meals... sigh. We quickly built a chicken coop for our backyard. Thankfully there's been a chicken lady I've been asking chicken questions at the feed store otherwise I would be lost. I thought at the beginning when I was taking them outside with me on warm days that they were dying falling over in the dirt... until I learned about the dust baths. It seems a bit overwhelming right now. I just want them to get feathered so I don't have to worry so much about them. I think I have to add more fun things for them though. :D

I have two older ISA hens, and got 4 younger ones 3 weeks ago, the old wonts won’t accept the new ones at all and keep attacking and pecking so have to have a divider fence in the run so they can see each other but can’t get to them, perhaps a rooster will solved these issues?

hi there, So i just started an integration of my 7 week old chicks to the coop of my 11 week old chicks. The younger chicks have been in a chicken wire brooder cage in the coop since week 3. So they have had interaction with the older chicks for over a month almost. I started with a few hours supervised, while the older chicks had the chance to free range. I have given the smaller chicks two days now to free range, yesterday was the first day they actually ventured out. They have spent two nights now in the coop and not in the brooder pen. Still a lot of neck and head grabbing... pushing off the roosts. They have the ability to hide from the bigger chicks but the younger ones have found spots on the lower roosts. Being allowed on the roosts... is that a sign we are making progress to a successful integration?

There's an opportunity to pick up 5 hens for $100. That's a pretty fair price right? One thing were concerned about is space. We're not sure if that coop we have is big enough for 6 hens.😬

How big is your coop? If you have a lot of protected outdoor space, I recommend at leave 2sqft per standard sized chicken in your coop. If you don't have covered space outside your coop, I recommend 4sqft.

Your method is the similar to yours, but I have separate coups. I added a third coup w/run this year because my chicks age were all over the map. All three coups and runs have common fences. They are all in my free-range area. That caused me to have 5 chicks get suffocated so I had to buy more chicks to keep my goal number, but that added to my age difference in my chicks. Once my oldest chicks were ready for the outside I put them in coup #3 for about three weeks. I open the gate once i thought they were ready, all the older chickens pick on them! No blood but they get chased when I come out to give them snacks, which I do nearly everyday. I have 4 different age groups that are all in the free-range area. The youngest group of chicks from this year have been outside for about three weeks and I will let them out into the free-range area next week.😢 I'm sure they will be picked on too...my oldest hen is the only one who doesn't get picked on. My youngest laying hens pick on my older 2023 chicks...everyone pick on them! It will be interesting to see if my older 2023 chicks pick on the younger 2023 chicks. They spent about 5 weeks together in the brooder...

I have a new rooster for my hens. He is in his own run next to the hens and see each other and he has an enclosed area in the coop for the night. The thing is, he doesn't like it when we come into his run to feed him. He stand guard and when we arrive he literally attacks us. How can we make him understand we are not going to hurt him. I don't see how he will let me go inside the run when he will be with hens. Help!

When I got my very first batch of chicks, two of them died the first night. That was so hard for me! But I've since learned that for the most part, baby chicks are fairly hardy. I hope you have good luck with your!

I would quarantine him for a couple weeks if you can to be sure he doesn’t have any illnesses. Then follow what I do in the video. :)

We've had our chickens look but not touch for quite some time, tried integrating and they drew blood. Separated for another week, same thing. We want our new buff orpingtons to be welcomed by our 3 Speckled Sussex but they are just mean. The buffs don't posture, they just run and cower. Going to get some rescue remedy but wondering what else you can do when they do draw blood? (The buffs are 16 weeks and the Sussex a year and a half)

Oh no! Every flock is different and some are less welcoming. You might have to keep them separate but seeing until the young ones get a little older. You could try removing the older ones and putting them in a separate area, putting the new ones in coop and then integrating the older ones back in.

do you ever pull on the feathers the back of their neck like a rooster does? I do and it seems to calm them down a lot. and help them see I'm the one to look to for direction..no, I'm not mean to them, no feathers come out, I just gently pull on those feathers, and the skin a little bit, as I hold them under my arm.

What about bringing 6 chicks 3 mt isa bruwns and 3 small chooks like dorkings, or Sussex at the same time into a coop? We are heading to a farm to buy 3 good layers and then 3 heritage chooks. So it could be 3 mt isa and 3 buff orpingtons which are the bigger chooks. Should I separate the small ones from the large ones still?

They will all be point of lay and there is no existing flock. They will all be new to the coop. Coming in at the same time on the same day but from different coops within the same farm. So they wouldn't have seen each other before.

I'm a new backyard chicken mom. I had 3 hens and 1 rooster that were 17 weeks old. I had not predator proofed well enough and sadly 3 were killed. The one left seemed so lonely and I read it isn't good for chickens to be alone. So several days after the massacre I bought 2 fourteen week old hens. The breeder told me to separate one day and then put them in the coop at night with the one bird. Things are not going well. Our one red hen has chased those two poor new hens and pecked them if she can get them. She pecks them off the roosting bar in the coop! (Second night). There is a size difference. Do I just need to keep the two new hens in a separate area for a longer time. Is it possible to attempt to create a new flock? Can my one remaining hen learn to accept new birds? Help!

I had two young-ish chickens, and just got new young ones.. Before my old chickens used to be so docile and sweet, but now they keep pecking at the new chickens but now they also started pecking at me :/// i hope i didn't ruin my relationship with the old chickens by bringing new ones.. Tonight I actually had to put the new chickens in the shed( which i feel bad for since it's kind of cold in there) but i didn't want to risk them being pecked more.. The other day, one of the old chickens grabbed a new one by the crest and didn't let go, just because she was trying to lay.. Should I just install another laying area for the new chickens?

Adding more nesting boxes could be helpful. If they aren’t drawing blood, I wouldn’t worry too much about it, though. There are a couple of homeopathic flower essence you can add to their water if you’re into that kind of thing (some people aren’t, and that’s fine!). One is called Rescue Remedy and it’s available usually at pet stores and health food stores. The other one is a single remedy called Vine. You might have to look for that one online. The most popular brand is “Bach Flower Remedies”.

Sometimes it just takes time. There are rare instances where integration doesn’t work but honestly I have never met a chicken I couldn’t integrate!

Are you witnessing them pecking each other? It’s molting season so it’s normal for them to be losing feathers right now.
