That really doesn't add a password to the actual wallet itself. I'm more worried about the wallet itself

so by doing this having it use the same lock screen code does it turn off the nfc when it's locked if the nfc has been activated? i have done this now for my mother who uses it for multiple services

I don't know about that but keep the NFC off when not using Google Wallet.
