I successfully followed your first tutorial and made a ridiculously pretty skirt and i made a mock up practice pocket that held all of my essentials (keys, wallet, phone, chapstick) and i didn't need to bring my purse. I have never felt so stylish and so ready for anything. Thinking of making another one to carry my multitool, hand sanitizer, and snacks. Pockets are the best.

What kind of pocket did you do? One that was sewn to the skirt or antique pockets? Super curious to know
@LetsDanceRedding

@wolfiesun9404 separate antique pocket. It was a real rough mock up, no binding or hemming. But I just wanted something functional so I could wear the skirt out and I had 10 minutes before we had to leave. Worked wonderful and I'm excited to make some nicer ones.

I like a sensible explanation of how and why to do things. I mostly use pockets to carry my phone around and put car keys in. Almost never for snacks. But if you have big enough pockets in a full skirt you can definitely take a couple of cans of cider into a festival without gate security noticing. Allegedly.

As a person with Type 1 diabetes, whose phone functions as their pancreas, historical pockets are THE BEST. I can stuff my phone in one, and my keys, ID, and some hypo snacks in case my blood sugar tanks in the other and I don't have to carry anything else. It's fantastic. I have a petticoat/skirt that I made last year with this same kind of idea, but there's some things about it that I don't love. This series inspires me to pull it out and make it over into something that I DO love.

I have the same, before I got into sewing much, I just sewed on some short leggings a pocket to put my pump inside:) now I make on every garment either patch pockets (I love the style and rather show off my pump than hide it) or other pockets and even adding some button hole for covering the string. but for skirts and summer dresses I always use to put a legging under. I will definitely make these historical pockets:D such a simple idea that I never thought of

Ooooh! I'm envious of your 2022 Dumpster Fire Historical Pockets by Sewstine! I like the detachable historical pockets because you can also wear them on the outside of your trousers / skirts (great for jeans with too small pockets). I have yet to make some, though. This Summer I used my not too small pockets (on a pair of cargo pants I made: McCall's M8206) for holding bus tickets, keys, my phone, interesting plant bits or rocks I found, and some change to hand to street musicians or panhandlers.

I'm going to try the historical style pockets, because I think I can use them in a slightly different way even with regular modern skirts. I use an insulin pump so I'm always avoiding skirts and dresses because I have to wear shorts under them anyways. If I make these of a good material I can use them all the time
@lynn858
@lynn858 Жыл бұрын
Excellent way to carry an insulin pump if you're into skirts! The other option seems to be a pocket attached to a bra strap, with the pump sitting inside the bra cup above the breast - but depending on the shape of your bust, and your preference in tops, that can be "unaesthetic".
@beawolfe

@@lynn858 I've seen this work for a lot of people! Unfortunately I am not the right shape for it to work for me, it would be too visible through my clothing no matter where I put it, which is a shame because it would be nice for pocketless pants as well. I find new ideas every day though, so maybe one day!

My favorite style is the detachable historical pocket! Since it's separate, it can be used with any skirt with pocket slits. I've made five skirts and only two pockets, and I have no regrets. When the pocket is on a separate waistband, heavy things don't drag down the skirt drape.

My main pocket contents are always keys, phone, wallet, if I'm leaving home without my purse. If I'm just waddling around at home it's my phone and various crafting supplies. I could never give up my purse though, it has almost everything I could possibly need. A first aid kit, various tools, a sewing kit, pen and paper, tissues, emergency chocolate, a bottle of water... I even have a flint and tinder in there just in case I somehow get lost in the woods. 😅

things in my pocketses: phone, keys for home, cellar, work and bike, headphones, a very small folding knife, a square of fabric for cleaning my glasses, a d20 and my wallet. these are the things that I use every day and that I want on my body at all times when I leave the house. Thank you for the pockets! :)

Ok, but now I want to draw a picture of Britannia dual-wielding a metre stick and tape measure! Great video as usual, I've got a lot of pockets to do in the near future so I guess I should get going. As to what I carry in my pockets, well at home it's just my phone, but when I'm LARPing it is water bottle, notebook, pen, in character and out of character cash, basically everything. I broke a belt once, though the historical pockets I had tied on were fine!😅

honestly I'm a backpack person because I want to carry my whole house around with me so learning to admit that I don't actually need all that stuff on the regular so I can carry smaller handbags that won't mess up my shoulders (as opposed to giant handbags the size of a backpack that will hurt my left shoulder specifically) has been hard. Therefore pockets are still always too small for me, and if anything they only ever get used for keys and phone

What an array of pockets! I made one pocket on a twill tape to go with the three skirts I ended up making. I do love the fact that I only need one pocket that then goes with each skirt. Mine usually just carries my phone and old leather wallet. Sometimes my house keys too. I have no fear that anything will drop out as the teardrop shape is just such a lovely one for carrying things. I really like how you present your videos. I'm definitely learning and hopefully improving since starting my channel a couple of months ago.... Thank you Ash.

Thank you! My wardrobe is woefully deficient in skirts. I searched & searched for a new church. My old one having gone contemporary - I want choirs & organ & piano music plus more conventional teaching. I found one & while there is no dress code, most ladies are wearing dresses or skirts. I was dreading the waist band darts & zippers plus pockets. I think this will do nicely & I won't feel out of place in my elastic waist pants any more.

Thank you for this! Going to try the attached historical pockets! I personally try to avoid bags in the summer as they can cause sensory issues for me when combined with the heat. Aside from the standard wallet, keys, phone, I tend to carry my earbuds, a pen, and a small fidget toy. I have one pair of overalls that lets me also carry my glasses case, bandaids, a short charging cord, and a small notebook. That being said, I have a friend who wears fantasy-adventurer belt bags on a regular basis, and that seems to be the best solution for holding one’s hoard without dealing with shoulder straps.

I cannot thank you enough for this and your previous video about the no waste skirt. I had been wanting one of this style - but either they were insanely expensive or I'd have to sew it myself from a pattern....and, alas, I am pattern illiterate. So here I am, on a random Saturday, purchasing a sewing machine and making a skirt with your video as a guide. I did make some small changes, but overall same concept. Last eve, I did make pockets, although very different than what you have here, as I did not yet have a video to follow...but they work - I ended up making what looks a bit like a half apron, with pockets at each side, and a bonus, accidental, secret pocket in the middle (stiched half-way up to keep pocket contents left and right instead of falling toward the middle and clumping) - and now I plan to use this to be the item that holds the back of my skirt on - just have to choose whether I want to do grommets or snaps for adjustability....hmmmm..... Again, thanks loads

when I'm wearing a regular four pocketed pair of trousers the arrangement is usually front-right: phone, small knife/multitool and keys with attached torch front-left: wallet and hand sanitiser back-left: handkerchief and clean tissues, back-right: usually empty in readiness for things I might acquire or as a receptacle for used tissues awaiting enbinment on occasion I use my back-right pocket to carry sunglasses (guess how the case got broken) and if I'm wearing a jacket with sufficiently large pocketses I may put an umbrella or water bottle in them. skimming the comments it seems I'm at the upper end of stuff-in-pocketses-ness but internally I feel like I ought to carry more stuff

I have been adding pockets to my clothes for probably 35 years (skirts, dresses, aprons, shorts). Thanks to allergies, probably the biggest use of my pockets are Kleenex. However, pens, pencils, markers, paperclips, and other things frequently make their way into my pockets, which might be an occupational thing (elementary and middle school teacher). Oh, and keys. Pockets are also extremely handy in the garden.

Seeing a meaningful comparison of the different pocket options has motivated me to switch over to detachable pockets. When it comes to carrying heavier things (books, water bottles, impulsive groceries, cool rocks I find on the ground, etc) I far prefer a vest or overcoat with large utility pockets. I find it less tiring to distribute the weight over my shoulders than on my waist especially on bloaty days. As sagely stated, ya boi has needs

Every lower-half garment requires a single phone-sized pocket on the right hand side. I've regretted every skirt I've bought since the advent of the smartphone that didn't have such a receptacle. I don't tend to put anything else in lower-half pockets because my dodgy hip objects to too much weight on it. In the winter when I can wear a big baggy jacket, I add my keys, my wallet, and a folded-up-small carrier bag and that'll do me without a bag for trips out that don't require any specific items.

I use my pockets to ditch my purse pretty regularly, and I put (what I think are) standard items: phone, wallet, keys. I also like pockets for carrying my phone around in my house so I don't forget where I set it and so my podcast will follow me around. And, of course, one always needs a pocket-handkerchief. (I actually do carry these -- embroidered ones, which I inherited from my grandma.) I like patch pockets and inseam pockets more or less the same and use them the same. Patch pockets are a matter of easthetics -- I like them for a mid-century look, especially to play with a bias cut pattern. Otherwise, inseam are somewhat more practical.

Inhaler, keys and phone. Everywhere. Younger Son is autistic and when younger, would try to wander out of the house... So I kept the door locked and the keys with me so we could get out if there was a fire. Or open the door to a delivery driver before they could escape. And now it's a habit to keep them with me. And I haven't locked myself out of the house for over two decades, so that's good! At work, it's work keys, lip balm and inhaler in one pocket, tissues and random stuff in the other pocket.

My everyday house/farm dresses cotton/polyester from Woman Within (Print Sleeveless Square Neck Lounger by Dreams & Co. with pockets) an online/catalog for women in plus sizes. I've only recently started wearing them in public, but due to fading and wild prints I will be make my own for public use copying this simple design from a wider range of fabrics and prints/solids in my stash. I wear it alone or layered (tops, leggings) depending on temperature. The generous side seam pockets were the selling point and are lovely for tissues, papers, small odds and ends as I move through the house during the day. If I do a man-tools project they hold screws, parts, tools. The XL size fits my roundness and short body (5'2", short neck) with hem is 2-3" below my knee. No petite option, shorten if desired. I haven't seen any moderate prints for theses from the catalog since I ordered the ones I have now which are large. The wait time for any order is two weeks or more. Perhaps they make them per order...in China. They were well constructed and wash/dry nicely. At first I hung them to dry, then got lazy and tossed them in the dryer which really made them wear and fade. But maybe at 10 years, that's not so bad.

I put a lot of big pockets in my garments. I usually only carry a handkerchief and chapstick and maybe my phone in there. BUT! I like having the option to carry more, like carrying bottles or cans of drinks, lots of candy, my Nintendo Switch, etc when I am moving around my house and carrying with my hands is cumbersome. My pockets normally contain my phone and/or my keys. But, if I’m crafting, it could be anything, because I have a touch of “I’ll put this here where I won’t lose it” along with a heaping dose of “out of sight, out of mind”. Thank for that lovely addition to the first video. I usually put nothing in my pockets except my phone but I want pockets if I have to move around the office or go somewhere without a handbag, so I can put keys or a pass, tissus, my phone, my headphones maybe or my purse (to go to the vending machine for exemple). Once used them to carry a small water bottle and a bottle of sunscreen. At work I had often need to go from on floor to the next carrying a measuring tape, pen, eraser, my computer, gloves etc so the more pockets I had the better.

Can't imagine living without pockets! I always have my wallet, mask, tube of chap stick, USB drive, phone, bandana, and a lucky horse chestnut in them (somehow this last one is not a joke)

Thanks for sharing this with us so we can visualize the different pocket strategies! There are only 2 personal choices I could go on and on about the benefits of, and that’s short hair and ditching any form of purse in favor of the almighty pocket! I keep cards, ID, cash in a small wallet that can also be clipped to my keys, I keep my keys on a carabiner clip so I can clip them on my front belt loop if I want, and then my cell phone. Those are my 3 must haves. Sometimes I also take my tiniest rocketbook and Frixion pen in my back pocket. If it’s winter I’ll also have chapstick, a handkerchief, and a few cough drops in my pocketses and a small refillable hand sanitizer clipped to my keys. I love the look of many purses and am drooling over a backpack purse by loungefly atm, but keeping up with them makes me batty and trying to find things in it is impossible and that’s if I don’t ADHD myself into losing it for months or forever … so yeah long live pocketses! Viva la revolution!

Hi from across the pond (Canada). After sixty years in the city my husband and I flew the nest and moved to rural Ontario. My kids have always referred to me as a pioneer woman, now I need the clothes to fit my title. thank you for the terrific video, I look forward to more.

Incredibly late to this, but my pockets regularly carry my smartphone, wallet, keys, Bluetooth earbuds, lip balm and/or lipstick/gloss (if I’m wearing makeup), doggie snacks, human snacks (usually a granola bar), my pill box, a utility knife, and often a pen or two. I also hate purses because I’m the type of person who would lose their head if it weren’t attached, and I also hate being unprepared for stuff. Picking up sewing (and especially historical sewing) to modify/make custom clothing was one of the best things I ever did for myself!

My pockets are basically my handbag! I have my hanky, phone , wallet and keys. I also make mine big enough to carry a paperback. I can also carry a small knitting project like socks. I’ve made several skirts like yours with the historically inspired pockets and your method is way simpler than mine! I will definitely be doing this next time

I'm with you, I like historical detachable pockets best. I wear a singular one almost every day over whatever I'm wearing. It's quilted so quite durable and pretty enough that I don't feel the need to hide it under a skirt. Typically in my pocket I carry my phone, keys, wallet, and sunglasses case. The other things that sometimes end up in my pocket are tea bags, my e-reader, earbuds, snacks, hair accessories, small journal, pens, calculator, small water bottle, cool looking rocks that need to come home with me, the list is kinda endless. As a personal preference I like having a set of hand pockets in my garments then the detachable historical pocket is what I use to actually cary stuff.

excellent pocket information, plus, the bias tape creation was the clearest explanation I've ever encountered! Could we get that bit by itself?

I’m a type one diabetic and I put my insulin pump in one pocket and my phone in the other. You’re right that heavy things, like pumps pull garments out of shape so using my phone as a counter weight kind of works. I’m intrigued with attaching historical pockets to the back panel and having the front lay over them. I can’t wait to try this. Thank you so much for these videos.

As a mom of three.... The historical pockets are AMAZING! I can fold and roll extra clothes for kiddos and put them in my pockets, which just adds to the fullness of the skirt when we go to the park/splash pad in the summer and then when it's time to leave, I "deflate" a little bit 😂😂 also, small Gatorade bottles or my water bottle easily fits in one pocket with a few sewing odds and ends or a small book. In the OTHER pocket, phone, and a men's wallet with my id, money, cards etc., one side ALWAYS is the "purse" side 😂😂 I'm a girly that doesn't like to carry a purse so nice big pockets (whether the historical 18th century or the late Victorian pockets) are a MUST! I also used to work in law enforcement, so my work cargo pants are something I'm used to. If my life can't fit in pockets, then it's excess and not necessary.... Usually. 😅😅😅😅

I only (currently) have one skirt that I can wear my 18th century style pockets with, but I basically use them (and the skirt) any time I need to pop to the shops or go and socialise with friends and don't want to carry any kind of bag :P

As an avid cargo pants wearer pockets my pockets can be full of: keys, phone, chapstick, wallet, mechanical pencil, sharpie, occasionally a pair of scissors, or a box knife. Sometimes when I'm out for a long period of time I add my water bottle and granola bar.

My answer to the pockets question: I rarely carry a handbag around now! I go to concerts, festivals, dinners, to work etc. without any sort of bag more often than not. I can carry my phone, keys, wallet, inhaler, a packet of tissues, a lip balm and a tube of lipstick in most of my dresses or skirts. It's awesome.

I was very happy to go sans handbag in my everyday wear memade dress this summer (many costumes previous first day to day dress) phone in one side wallet in the other. This opened up the crossbody wear/weild spot where my purse usually is for a very necesary waterbottle sling.

I haven't made the skirt yet, but I did make an 18th century tie on pocket for walking the dog. It holds everything (sunglasses, phone, keys, bags, and then "gift" until you can get to a trash can) and doesn't drop forward when you're cleaning up after the dog. I simply did a regular stitch on it rather than binding, and it's perfectly plain. Absolutely love it, and don't think I'll ever make anything again without a matching pocket! Goodbye, purses.

I’ve never made one of these skirts but really want to! I would most often use them for work (I work at a science museum) so I use my pockets for my phone, keys and chapstick and clip my walkie talkie on the pocket or waistband to hold it in place.

I loved this overview, and it nudged me closer to making my own historical pockets. Since I started making my own clothing, I now have more clothing with usable pockets. I put my phone, my keys, and my payment cards in them. I have a jacket with an external, free-hanging (only attached at the back top) pocket that is gathered and very roomy. I recently wore it to a work event. I was either going to be very early or very late, so I stuffed a half-knitted sock in it in case I wound up being early. I wound up being late and so didn't get a chance to knit, but I was prepared and still presentable, which was very satisfying.
