I did this 45 years ago to a 66 volvo , the ignition switch went bad and the replacement was 150.00 just for the part. so I bought a key on and off switch and a push button to crank for 10.00 and worked great.

Reading some of these comments and everybody seems to be joking around or not paying attention to the possible benefits of doing this push button ignition I believe the point was if you are unable to afford a new ignition switch then you could put in a couple dollars worth of wiring and a couple dollars worth of a push-button switch possibly keeping the total around $10 or even less now what you could do is hide that push button switch then you would have yourself an added security especially on these older Toyota trucks that seem to be very easy to steal

Exactly. My old Ford Escape runs great but it looks its age and my key is sloppy, requiring me to push inwards to start the engine. An aftermarket replacement ignition switch is $110 before labor and I am not willing to invest the time or expense. Adding this setup for when my ignition switch finally quits working is cheap insurance. I had a setup like this on an old MG from the factory and I loved it.
@andrewgordon2352 жыл бұрын
Old semi trucks had a similar setup the key was on the right and the starter button was on the left by the driver side door.

Do you have to leave the stock starter exciter wire connected to the starter also, or only the new cable running to the switch?
@thezombino61195 ай бұрын
For those who dont understand - The ignition switch went bad so turning the key fully would not work. You gotta have the key in to supply power to all your "HOT in 'on' posititon" fuses and instead of replacing the ign switch, he took a power and ground source already located in the factory wire harness (that plug you see), added a momentarily switched power source to run power to the small starter wire that gets its power from the IGNITION switch. The power and ground give the switch a light and the power just transfers itself to another wire. Thats why he has 2 wires from switch going to power. One is for the blue switch light and the other is to power the "output" (green wire to black wire) for the starter trigger.
@Branhawk Жыл бұрын
So did you unplug the wire on the original ignition that turned the starter? And why did you have to run a separate wire to the starter if there is already one there on the old one? Novice asking

I have a 1987 toyota mr2 I'm trying to do this with. I ran a new cold wire all the way from the starter to a button in the dash and soldiered a new wire to the ignition switch. My cold wire on the starter had resistance and needed to be replaced. When I try to push the button it worked initially (my starter solenoid is also bad) but it blew the 7.5amp fuse that runs to the ignition. Have I wired it wrong or do I just need a 10amp fuse or something? I have the diagram and drew what I've done but I don't know anything about car wiring and am learning on the fly I want the car to need the key on in order to start just like yours but I have a simple 2 connection spring-loaded button (positive to positive)

@@sw20keven I did it, but it always blows that fuse. I stepped it up to a 10amp fuse and it still blows it so I don't use it lol. I keep a box of 10 amps from autozone in the car too just in case I ever need to use the push to start. I'm not savvy enough with wiring and haven't been able to figure out why it does

Regarding your wire to the starter motor, you call it a "trigger" wire. Is this connected to the solenoid? It appears the starter motor always power and the solenoid doesn't have power from the ignition switch anymore.

In my scenario you still need the key in… you can wire it where you don’t need the key but that’s different

what is different and what needs to be changed? in my head it should if i just connect all the wires respectively to the start stop button module (ignition 1&2,ground, acc, starter) and just about any momentary switch@@Archifx

The Escape has a different type of key ignition switch from the one you describe. The first "click" is Accessory, the second one is On and forcing it farther engages the starter. The one you are referring to would be in an old Ford F150.

Like if Christopher Walken where to tell u he would be like "my guy.. u got it all wrong.. it's the wrong tone.. focusin on the wrong things...get to the install already.. if u mention the KNOCK out plate again..then ima knock u out and stab u n the face with a soldering iron!. Now get back to work.." So yeah beware of using the wrong tone with Mr. Walken..
