Oh Lordy Girl, Don't stop now. I'm very into using canvas over journals and you are helping my brain cramps. Not enough canvas videos. Keep the ideas flowing. These shells could be put down in white a bit smaller and flatter as mosaic in strategic areas and other art still filling the balance of the canvas. Oh I forgot to say instead of heavy acrylics, if they were white they could be colored with watercolor, inktense or a couple secrets up my sleeve. I love what you're doing here. Just quit cutting the sound out on those bathtub singers. That's adorable.

This is truly a remarkable texture technique with stunning results. It is something I have wanted to try but my procrastination has been in my way until seeing your inspiring video. I have been saving eggshells for this purpose so now I have no reason but to use them creatively and have fun. Thank you for this very inspiring tutorial and please keep up with other ideas and techniques you use in your artwork.

Since we recycle our food scraps into our gardens I 'clean' the egg shells before they go into the compost bucket. To remove the membrane from shells I dump the shells into soapy water, let sit for few minutes and then rub with finger or thumb the membrane from inside the shell. Easy and quick and should do the job for use in your texture art. Enjoyed the video and the ideas. thanks for sharing.

I started boiling eggs immediately upon seeing this 1st Video. I'm 65 and have Arthritis in both hands and didn't take me long to realize removing that Membrane this way wouldn't work for me. Poured most of the overnight soaking water off and added 1/2 cup bleach (enough to have all the shells covered) and sure enough less than an hour later problem solved. Not one sign of it anywhere on the shells. Put the shell fragments in a strainer and rinsed well then air dried. Perfect now to use as texture.

Before watching this I collected eggshells and I already had the skin out of the shells. I just took the skin out while the eggshells were still hot. The same as I remember way back when we used eggshells for easter crafts. You may find other ideas if you search easter egg crafts somewhere online. After watching: did this same stuff when I was a kid. Makes great for a sandy beach painting and great for easter baskets in a painting, tulips are beautiful done with eggshells. Thanks

the shoe polish is a form of antiquing. I do it on bisque fired pottery, you can also use oil paint, you don't need any turps. The idea is it is worked into the recesses and then you wipe off the surplus. Acrylic paint would not wipe off the raised surface at all well.

This is a great video! Thanks so much for sharing. I'm involved with an art sharing project and the theme of the project are either Halloween or fall. I'm going to do fall, I don't do Halloween so it's fall for me and I'll try this technique for background. The only negative is you don't answer people's questions or comment when you tell their technic for removing the membrane.

I really like this idea. I have been collecting eggshells for a massive project for months and all I do is wash the shells out, leave them to dry for a few days and then use something like the bottom of my water bottle to mash them up... as they have been left for a while the membrane becomes quite stiff or 'crispy' and so is much less skin like. There is no way I could do what you have done and peel off the membrane as I have no patience for that!!!

i boil egg shells in water for about a minute and let it cool. The membrane get cooked and becomes slightly rubbery, staying in one piece when peeled away. You can carefully remove (from each half of cracked eggshell) in one piece. i'm using this technique for a diorama -thanks! You should check out weathering techniques modelers use (especially armor modelers). They're not often regarded as artist, but i'll leave that to each person, as to what they think about that. Anyway, you might find the way we use washes, shades and dry brushing, useful and can add to your own -because our medium, is also 3D with textures.

Another way to remove the membrane from the shell. When you empty shell, dip your finger in pure vinegar. Run in the inside of the washed out egg shell, the vinegar is acidic and there's no problem with pushing the membrane out of the shell as well you will be able to tear it out. Hope this is explained well enough. (Jan. 29/15).
